I'm looking for info on the children of the African American family of Warren Davis and wife Mariah Long, both born about 1828. The 1870 US census shows them residing in the community of Brushy Creek in Anderson county SC. The last 6 childrens given and middle names are listed as initials only. Their 3rd child, W L Davis, is my maternal great grand father, William L. Davis. I have not been able to find them in any other census listing. The 1870 census list John Davis, born 1851; Doc Davis, born 1854. After my great grandfather, they are listed as H. J. Davis and L. A. J. Davis, both famale, born 1858 and 1862. The next child is W. D. Davis, male, born 1963. The last two kids are female, M. A. and E. C. J.
Hello Jill Burch;
Thanks very much for the information. "A Place at the Table" is at the top of my reading list.
From your research, what connections have you discovered between the surname " Blake " and the surname "Blakely". Do you think that Blake just might be a derivative of Blakely?
The Blakes and the Blakelys seem to all come from the SC area.
Jerry Blake
Pascagoula, Ms/Hampton, Va/San Diego, Ca

Hi Jerry,

You might want to research Joshua Blake lineage.(white). Many Blakes are from the lower part of SC. Jasper, Beaufort, and Chester, SC. When the slave owners children moved to different location slaves who were willed travel with them. I will send or post some information on this forum, when I get home--out of town. Also, borrow this book from the library. A PLACE AT TABLE...see link below
http//boards.ancestry.com/surnames.blake/1202/mb.ashx

Hello Jerry, Nice to meet you. My ggreat grandmother had a brother named John. Do you have any of these names in your research: Lloyd, Laura, Mary, Perry, Eliza, Pheobe Blake in your family tree? The family lore is the family was split up before 1870. Mary, Perry and Eliza is listed with their grandmother in the 1870 or 1880-Waxhaw, Lancaster, South Carolina census.

Sullivans of Greenville County

I am researching for a friend. Her family is from Greenville County, South Carolina. The ancestor that I am looking for more information on is Rufus (or Ruffus) Sullivan, married to Maggie Lee W??? (not sure of her maiden name).

Rufus was born 20 May 1913, died 12 Jan 2001. Maggie was born 4 Jan 1924, still living.

His father's name is Houston, born in South Carolina in about 1890, death unknown. He was perhaps married twice I believe: first to a Katie (Bunion maybe)(died about 1925), and perhaps second to Marie Downes.

There was as least one other child born to Houston and Katie: Henry Sullivan born about 1924.

I have come up with a couple other individuals listed in their households on various census': Lillie M Ross, born about 1912; Cathrine Keller, born about 1923.

They have a strong military tradition.

Any information, no matter how small or trivial is appreciated. I am out of ideas on how to proceed with my research.

Hello,
My set is from Sumter, SC. It would start with Camilla Jenkins( born 1911) who's parents were Davis's. I believe she married a Jenkins out of the NY area. I'm not sure of the parents but the sibling to Clayton A Jenkins Sr (Camilla Jenkins husban) was William Jenkins a merchant marine out of NY. As far as I know Sumter is still home to the remaining elders

My grandfather , John Blake, was born in Central Alabama in 1860.He migrated from Alabama to the Mississippi Gulf Coast around 1880. My research suggest a strong South Carolina connection. Can you e-mail me the Blake slave list or any (AA) Blake information that you might have?

Thanks,
Jerry Blake
Mason Gatrey, Sr - Baldwin / Mobile Counties (Alabama)

Good Morning, Im trying to help a friend of mine, Foy Edward Thomas III (whom i requested to be added to this group) with his brick wall :

Mason GATREY, Sr. - from Baldwin/Mobile, Alabama area born pre-1870 (African-American)

This is the ggf of a friend of mine looking for info. His son, Mason Gatrey, Jr. married a Beulah Thomson and he was probably born around 1900.

Please let us know if you can find Mason Gatrey, Sr on census record, and vital records.

Ive been able to fin Mason Gatrey, Jr listed with his wife Beulah Thompson on a death record for their daughter Juila Voncille Gatrey in 1950 on Family Search. But this name is going to have multiple spellings because of how it sounds. In fact, I saw a Julia Guitrey in LEE County, Al in 1900 Census. He is not sure if his ggf was enslaved in SC, but if so, this lady might hold a clue.

Leakesville, MS might be an expanded are and i have been helping him in between my own family searches, so i havent found anything on surface and not had time to dig deeper and he is relatively new to genealogy.

I can be reached at annehuffman01@gmail.com

Thank You

The Ealy/Elie, Lake and Drummings Families

Hi!
I am 72yrs of age and the great great great grandson of Robt and Jenne Elie/Ealy. Their son Elbert and his wife Annie Quarles-Elie/Ealy were the parents of my great grandmother Elizabeth/Lizzie Ealy-Lake. I'm trying to locate other members of the Ealy/Elie Clan, who migrated from South Carolina and settled in Washington, DC and Hempstead, NY, during the 1920's and 1930's. In addition, I'm trying to find out what happened to my great grandmother's husband(Joseph Lake) and also get inforation on his parents and siblings. He's listed in the 1910 US Census Record for Aiken,Aiken County, SC. However, he's not listed in the 1920 US Census Report for Aiken, SC. Finally, my cousin Curtis Steadman(92yrs) of Washington, DC is trying to track down any information on the parents and siblings of his grandfather(John Henry Drumming,Sr. of Aiken or Edgefield County, South Carolina. Mr Drumming left Giddy Swamp, Aiken County, SC in 1924 and migrated to Washington, DC with his wife, five children, and two grandsons. Cousin Curtis has no knowledge of any of his grandfather's relatives! Any assistance in helping me find the missing peices to these puzzles will be deeply appreciated by me and Cousin Curtis! Please feel free to contact me, anytime!

Just 'cause I'm familiar with Mims in East Texas, I took a close look at this. Did Essie Mims die 1 Feb 1926 in Aiken County? Death certificate indicates he was a minister and parents were Richard Mims and Fannie Anderson. Was one of Essie's wives named Margia/Margie or something similar? RSVP.

The problem with your narrative, Brandee, is that it is incomplete. If someone wanted to help you, you have provided no information to help them get started. For example, what was the name of the father who was married twice? What were the names of his children? On what census did you first encounter the father, who was his wife and what township were they living in? Understand what I mean?

Thanks Sameera! Sorry I am just getting to your reply. Yes my family are the African American Mims/Upsons in the area. My grandmother was Katherine Upson-Mims. I have five aunts who are living; three that live in the area: Ruth Mims-Garner, Maxine Mims-King and Richedean Mims-Coleman. Also I have cousins from the Upson family, such as Stephanie Upson. Thank you for your help because I have hit a dead end in my research and I will get in touch with the genealogical center in Edgefield.
