Hi Mary Rebecca, So nice to hear from you. I would like to suggest a book to you which I was involved in its production. Hosann A Community At The Crossraods by Marrianne and Paul Russo. It is available online from most bookstores. Sorry I don't have the isbn # but it can be obtained online by typing in the title of the book. It also has information about the original Walls family and the people of the area they lived in, Hinsonville, now Lincoln University in Southern Chester County, PA. I would be more than happy to speak with you but I really like the way this book explains the development of the church. I can add additional details and answer questions you may have. Your plans for your reunion sounds exciting. I will check out the FB info now.I will inbox my contact information to you also. Clinton was the nephew of my grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Walls. She was the sister of William George Walls, Clinton's father. Thank you for being in touch. I hope I can be of some assistance to you. Hersey Gray

Mary Wright

YOUNGSTOWN – Rev. Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Wright took her flight from death to life eternal on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, to be with the Lord.

Mrs. Wright was born May 16, 1927, in Pittsburgh, Pa. to Margaret Thomas, coming to Youngstown as a child.

She attended Youngstown Public Schools. She married Rev. Delaney Wright and to this union four children were born, Anthony, Delaney Jr., Carolyn Elaine and Margaret.

At the time they were married, they were members of the 903 Franklin Avenue Church, under the pastorate of Elder Paul D. Ealy.

Rev. Mrs. Wright was a “trailblazer” in her own right, performing an apostolic work and laying many foundations in the city of Youngstown and Milwaukee.

Rev. Wright started a convalescent home for the elderly, where she lovingly nursed them back to health. She was the Executive Director of the Gilead House Community Center, then located on the city’s north side. Among other activities, the center was used for preschool children from David Verzilli Ministries, which at that time met at Stambaugh Auditorium as part of the Kathryn Khulman Ministries.

Rev. Mrs. Wright also set several first, among which she was the first black family to reside on Catalina Avenue and the first female black woman chaplain of Youngstown City Council. Through her affiliation with the city high schools, she housed many foreign exchange students.

As an apostolic trailblazer, she orchestrated and conducted ecumenical services in Wick Park and provided free food baskets for neighborhood families during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

Rev. Wright was instrumental in the early 70s in securing monies for the household technicians trip to Washington, D.C. during their advocacy for fair wages.
She was in alliance with the Black Women’s Caucus, giving her the opportunity to meet Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm and many others in government positions.
She worked along with Ron Daniels in the Black Caucus-Youngstown, Ohio in the 1970s.

Rev. Wright continued her apostolic work for 14 years in Milwaukee, where she transitioned with her oldest son, Tony, known as a gifted pianist. There the genesis of her Prayer Outreach Ministry of preaching, healing and prayer was birthed. She was licensed and ordain by Elder A. A. Allaman from Tulsa, Okla. in the 1940s.
After returning to Youngstown and living at that time with her late daughter, Carolyn, she reunited with the Ebenezer C.O.G.I.C. under the pastorate of Elder Calvin E. Kirkland, now known as the New Ebenezer Life Center, where the Rev. Ernest Walker is the pastor.

She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Apostle Denise (Apostle David) Talbot of Liberty, Ohio; two grandchildren, Pastor Aaron Talbot and Evangelist Sharon Talbot; two great-grandchildren, Isaiah Anthony and Jalayah Marie;and a multitude of friends and extended family in Youngstown and Milwaukee.

Besides her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Delaney Wright, who passed away in 1964; and three children, Anthony “Tony,” Delaney Jr. and Carolyn Elaine Wright.

Friends may call on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the L.E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow immediately at 11 a.m.

BRISTOL, Run-Away Negro in Philadelphia a slave or servant?

I found the following newspaper article in a Philadelphia newspaper, dated July 26, 1792. I have found similar articles in Philadelphia papers that talk about white men who have run away, apprentices, marines, etc., and I would like to know if there is a chance this man was a servant, or if he was a slave (I'm hoping he was a servant!).
"Forty Dollars Reward. Ran-Away last evening, a Negro man named BRISTOL, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, his hair or wool he wears sometimes queeded; had on a nankeencoat, with four pockets, nankeen overalls, and a striped nankeen waistcoat, a high crown castor hat, shoes with gilt buckles, and took with him a superfine green mixture cloth coat, with a black cape, lappelled, several waistcoats, and some other clothes. Whoever secures said Negro in any gael on the Continent, shall have the above reward, and all reasonable charges paid by John P. DeHaas."

Mt Gilead AME church is located on Buckingham Mountain in Buckingham, Pa. Its next town over to New Hope. It was built by slaves and is only open a few times a year. If you contact Buckingham Twp they might be able to tell you who the caretakers are now. Due to serious vandelism, alot of the grave sites have been destroyed but a group has listed all the names and gravestones that can stil be read. There is also info on the web about the church. Good luck!
I'm trying to track down my ancestors back in the Doylestown area, and have gotten to 1820. This church was a starting point for me.
This is my neices account and I go on when i can. :)

Im doing a lot of looking up info at the Spruance Historical library at the Mercy museum. If I see that name I will let you know! I also came across a school located near New Hope that was for blacks and malattos, and i am tracking 2 possible male ancestors to this school listed on the 1870 census. Waiting to hear back from the historical society in New Hope and Solebury to see if they have a name!
Good Luck!

Lydia Williams
Wondering About Darby, PA

I missed seeing a documentary about African=Americans in Darby, Pa. Apparently Darby held some significance in the African-American community. I know it was a stop on the Underground Railroad. Is there anything else significant about it? My grandaunt moved there from VA in 1875 and stayed there for at least 45 years.

My great grand aunt Lilly A Hudnall married Henry Brown in Fauquier County, VA in 1877 (approx.) Then they moved to Darby, PA where they stayed through 1920. That's where the trail ends. They had 10 children over 30 years: Charles (b, 1872), Annie (b. 1878), John Robert (b.1880), William Henry Jr. (b. 1882), Edward (b. 1885), Florence (b. 1886), Lillie (b. 1888), Maggie (b. 1893), James Phillip (b. 1896), and Lewis T (b. 1903). I don't know where they all ended up. There was a grandson named Morton as well. I would like to trace this family forward but there is no living family member to help. So any help from this board would be appreciated!

Sr. Mother Marena was a renowned cook sharing her talents with many. She was instrumental in helping with preparations for the Wild Game dinners in Bethlehem at one time. She served as the Head Cook for Bethlehem Summer Camp for many years and also provided meals for National Choir members during their rehearsals. She found joy in serving others.

Early February 23, 2010 Adv. Sr. Mother Harris completed her transition in the Coshocton Memorial Hospital Extended Care Center. She was a resident of Jacobs Dwelling Nursing Home where she found great care and comfort.

Adv.
Milberry/Cross from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

Looking for information on ancestors and decendents of Nellie Elizabeth Cross nee Milberry. Nellie had four children - Effie born about 1892, Clarence born 1903 and Calvin and Guy - dates of birth unknown. I know Effie (never married) and Clarence (married with 4 children)lived and died in the Gettysburg area. I believe Calvin lived near Chambersburg, and Guy might have moved to Pittsburg. We are not sure of the ethnic ancestry. Nellie and her children were listed as 'N" or "B" on the 1900 and 1920 census, but Clarence was light skinned, so he could possibly have been Mulatto. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hosanna Meeting House African United Methodist Protestant Church was a church, a stop on the underground railroad, a community meeting place, and a historical icon for African Americans in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Located next to, and surrounded by Lincoln University in Oxford, Hosanna is all that remains of the town of Hinsonville, a 19th century African American village in Chester County.
