Boyd was a leading local undertaker: news obituary

Beachwood --Mary E. Boyd was a matriarch of the funeral industry.

Boyd, 95, died at home in Beachwood, Ohio on March 28, 2013.

The petite, gentle, comforting undertaker was a fixture at E.F. Boyd & Son, a historic African-American funeral service.

"Mrs. Boyd was a talented, kind woman who ran the family and knew how to run the business," said Dr. Edgar Jackson, former chief of staff at University Hospitals, who lived at the Boyds' E. 89th St. parlor and helped out as a student. "She supported Mr. Bill Boyd and allowed him to fly in the community and the business."

Her father-in-law, Elmer F. Boyd, founded the business in 1905, a few months after the House of Wills, Cleveland's oldest African-American funeral service. Her husband, William Francis Boyd, took it over in 1938, a year before the marriage.

For decades, Mary Elisabeth answered the couple's bedside phone at night and passed it to Bill. She worked at the business from 1966, when the youngest of their three children finished elementary school, to 1991, when Bill had a heart attack and Mary retired to take care of him.

She was born Mary Elisabeth Webster and raised in Cleveland, Ohio as an only child. On her way home from Fairmount Junior High School in 1929, she saw the horrific Cleveland Clinic fire. She graduated from Glenville High School and attended Ohio State University and Cleveland College.

Webster worked as a secretary at her family's Mount Zion Congregational Church, then located at 9014 Cedar Ave., near Boyd's. She also sang in its chancel choir.

After marrying, she stayed home to raise the children. She became president of the Miles Standish School Parent-Teacher Association, the Mary B. Talbert Home for unwed mothers and the local chapter of the Jack & Jill youth organization. She was also president and co-founder of the local chapter of Girl Friends, a civic network.

Her youngest child, Marcella Boyd Cox, said Mary dressed elegantly, collected finery, painted abstracts, golfed and played bridge. She belonged to the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

The three children and two granddaughters run the business today. Besides their flagship, they have parlors in Warrensville Heights and East Cleveland.

Mary Elisabeth Webster Boyd

1917-2013

Survivors: Husband, William F. Boyd Sr.; children, William F. "Pepper" Boyd II of Shaker Heights, Marina E. Grant of Richmond Heights and Marcella Boyd Cox of East Cleveland, Ohio; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral: 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 5, 2013 at Mount Zion Congregational Church, 10723 Magnolia Dr., Cleveland.

Contributions: Alzheimer's Association, 23215 Commerce Park Drive, Suite 300, Beachwood, OH 44122, alz.org/cleveland, or Hospice of the Western Reserve, 17876 St. Clair Ave., Cleveland, OH 44110, hospicewr.org.

Arrangements: E.F.
This is a bit of a long shot as I see you posted your message in 2002... I am looking for information about Pearl Rickman (male), born 1877 in Hardin Co, Ohio to Jefferson Rickman and Jennie Elyson. I have not been able to find him after the 1880 census. His siblings were Oliver William Rickman and Bert Eron Rickman. Thanks.

Looking for information on John McKee and family. They were in the 1830 Belmont County Census and living in Goshen. They were labeled Mulatto. Looking for a registry or some other documents that might list the family members - Francis/Frank (my 3x ggrandfather), John, James(my 2x ggrandfather), and his wife Nellie as well as others. Also trying to figure out where they may have come from (seems like VA, but not sure what county).
Shawn I know this post date back to 2007, if you can take a moment and respone I would be thankful for your time, you post the following, where did you find the source on David and Elizabeth , where they list Elizabeth parents as Hicks and McGooden or Gooden...Elizabeth (1834-1907) and David Rollins(1824-1904) were married 08-09-1850. David Rollins lists himself as from Virginia, but Elizabeth states she is from North Carolina and lists her parents as McGooden and Hicks. Hicks is a very common surname out of North Carolina, but I have not been able to make a connection there.

Dear Rev. Linda,

I hope this message finds you well. On the 1870 US Census, there is a George Hudson living in the same house with my great-great grandfather, John Hurley, and his mother, Eliza Moore Hurley. But, I don't know what their relationship is.

Eliza was born in Virginia, but married a Daniel Hurley in the late 1830s in Springfield. They also lived in Dayton, where John was born.

By 1880, John is in Fremont (Sandusky County) and Eliza is with her daughter, Harriet Hurley Barker, in Mansfield (Richland County).

Is your dad a descendant of the George Hudson whom I am referencing above?

Hope to hear from you soon.

Thanks,
Sharon

Harts Morrison Brown
With his death at age 89, Harts Morrison Brown leaves a legacy of family and friends whom he inspired to live passionately, to follow their dreams and to seek out new experiences, as he did.

The outspoken Cincinnati, Ohio resident, who espoused the values of education, community and the arts, died of lung cancer on June 24, 2011

Born June 4, 1922, to Clarence T. Brown, Sr. and Ellen Partridge Brown Speller, Mr. Brown was raised by his maternal grandparents, Harts Henry and Mary Ashe Partridge, in Cincinnati.

He attended Walnut Hills High School, where he was a member of the track team as hurdler and graduated third in the class of 1940, said his daughter Ama Brown-Fenton of Columbia, Md.

After graduation, Mr. Brown moved to Philadelphia to live with his mother. While there, he learned that the U.S. Army Air Corps was training African-American men to fly and maintain combat aircraft in Tuskegee, Alabama. Mr. Brown enlisted in 1941 at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C., and went on to become part of what history would recall as the legendary Tuskegee Airmen.

His dreams of being a fighter pilot were shattered during his training, when he was hit with a baseball, damaging the vision in his left eye. That didn't stop him from earning two Bronze Stars for his service in the European-African-Middle Eastern campaigns, particularly Italy, in World War II, his daughter said.

After his honorable discharge in 1945, Mr. Brown returned to Philadelphia, where he attended Temple University. There he met his first wife, the late Ada Bryant Brown, and began what would become a large family: their three children would be joined by five other children from two additional wives.

"He often joked that the two things he loved most were women and children," Brown-Fenton said. "He was a romantic through and through; he loved to write poetry, and he would definitely be the type to woo someone."

Mr. Brown earned his bachelor's degree from Temple in 1950 and worked in a variety of professions. During his time with the Social Security Administration, Mr. Brown worked toward employee rights and desegregation, encouraging changes and advancement for women and minorities, Brown-Fenton said.

After working as a college instructor in psychology at Loyola College of Maryland, Antioch College in Columbia, Md., and Federal City College, which became part of the University of the District of Columbia, Mr. Brown pursued a consulting career until his deteriorating vision forced him to take early retirement in 1985.

In his retirement, Mr. Brown, who had young children at home, became heavily involved with their school district, the Howard County (Maryland) Public School System.

Through working with the district's Black Student Achievement Program (BSAP), he became a member of the Council of Elders of the Black Community of Howard County, which began as a ceremonial group but soon branched out to take on additional roles supporting and recognizing student achievement, and in the local African-American community. His efforts earned Mr. Brown a "Maryland's Most Beautiful People" award in 1992, his daughter said.

Brown-Fenton said her father was passionate about the group because he believed in "encouraging young people to achieve the greatest that they can, and that mediocre is not OK."

"Whatever he was doing, he was very passionate about; he never did things in a slack-off manner," Brown-Fenton added. "If he said he was going to do (something), he did it and he gave his whole heart."

He encouraged his children and others around him to find their passions, too.

"My father was very, very smart and he encouraged all his children ... to try different things, be it foods or a new career," Brown-Fenton said. "My dad was a dreamer, and he always encouraged us to follow our dreams. He encouraged others to do what they really loved to do."

In addition to his daughter, survivors include four sons, Harts B. Brown of Philadephia, Rick Brown of Carson, Calif., Kojo Brown of Arbutus, Md., and Jason Marks of Warren, Ohio; three other daughters, Deborah Brown of Philadelphia; Dr. Nancy Brown-Holt of Woodstock, Md., and Dr. Ellyne Brown-Downs of Baltimore; a nieece,Jean Ellen Brown Vinson of Philadelphia; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and former spouses Dr. Ruth Payne Brown of Baltimore and Carrie A. Brown of Arbutus, Md.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Poplar Springs, Md.

Memorials: Harts M. Brown Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 1558, Columbia, MD 21044. Donations will support the Council of Elders of the Black Community of Howard County Scholarship Fund

This church sits on the Gist Settlement land. Across the street from it is the cemetary. The Turners,Robinsons,Green, Rollins and Field family still live in Ohio and surrounding areas. Paul Turner still lives on Gist Settlement. He has farmed the land for years and is fighting to preserve the area. Is there someone in particular you are looking for to make a connection? I know the Turner family and am family with the others.
