Does anyone have any information about the African American Abrams family that lived at 182 Charles or Charleston Street in Newark, Essex County, NJ during the 1930's. The 1940 US Census does not show that address. The Abrams family had lived in Putnam County or Baldwin County, Georgia from about 1900-1920.]The head of the Family was Noah Abrams and he was married to Isabel McMullen(s)Abrams and they had several children. Any information about this family will be sincerely appreciated.

Hey prof Anderson. I tried to email the notes as an attachment via your email. For some reason, it was giving me an address error of some sort. I first i thought the notes were too long (i've noticed email cut back on the amount of memory usage you can email, no more videos and things. But it tells you it's too large, this was different, so I reluctantly put my notes as a reply here on ancestry, copied and pasted, but i guess that was too long. I am going back to try my email. My email is darrengray2006@gmail.com. If i still have trouble, maybe you can email me, and i can attach it with a reply. Sorry, I thought they were up on here.

Hi, I began this thread and have followed it with interest even though it was not about Hackensack. Wish I had interrupted you earlier to suggest: Start another thread with the correct city and county in the subject line with the Jackson surname. I am a retired archivist and librarian and can't stress enough how important these subject lines are. I was thrilled I had started something that panned out for you-all. BTW, I went to Bergen Co. last summer and think that the quarry owned or managed by my research family was near the Palisades.

It's a pleasure corresponding with you. The Davis family that i mentioned, the daughter was Leslie Jones who attended the Lutheran School. Not sure if they have a historian or not, but if they do, they should no something about the Davis's and their possible connections with the Jackson Family. Also, the 3 families that were related, the kids i knew were Sandy, who was older, and walked me to school when i was in Kindergarted (she was in the 8th grade) and in the next house was a younger kid named Cris (This is someone goes around asking questions - I'm going to have my neighbor go down and see if they're still there. She would know anyway if they're still there (She knows everything that goes on lol. If they're still there, she will go down and investigate for me. Any other findings I come across, I will certainly forward it. I hope you were able to get through my notes lol.

By the way, I am a history professor at a local college in Jersey City so ethically I must include you! I will send you a list of the old street names in Jersey City perhaps that will answer some of your questions. As far as the museum is concerned it has not been open as far as I can tell-every time I drop by it's closed. I knew the curator Mr. Brunson Sr. who has passed away and the museum was left to his son. I was told by colleagues that the museum has pictures of the Jackson brothers and I am very anxious to see what they looked like. i have been researching this family for about 5 years and I am hoping to help preserve their memory. Thank you so very much for your help! My name is Dorothy Anderson and my email is dandersonpledger@comcast.net.
Ok, I think that's great, i've been doing my own little research of jc, and especially the Underground RailRoad, and i think i grew up with Jackson Descendents. I have 8 pages of notes on this (the last seven, the first is about another old house that i used to help out an elderly lady whose father built the house. It's kind of boring to anybody, other then anyone interested in this. I ask that you keep the names associated with the Jackson houses, the names of the families that held the houses for years, during my growing up, I ask that you don't reprint any of them. I have narrowed the original 2 safe houses down to 3 properties, all of which properties were Jacksons as of 1873, when it was still not named. If any of my information leads to any new documented history, i ask that i get credited (Have such an infinity for history, would love to be part of it lol. If you send me an email adress that i can send you my notes, I will send them. Also being that they're my notes, they're not really written as something to be read by others, so if you'd like, you can give me a number that i could reach you if you'd like to talk. I just found out about the Jackson brothers a few days, and spent a few hours putting the notes together, i Already had the maps. We still have the house (My Brother and I) and my brother still resides there. I live in Brooklyn. Does the African American Museum have a website? I couldn't find it. I emailed profesor Carmella Karnoutsos of the history dept at NJCU, to ask her about the original lane. It is stated that onlly ran half down, but i think it might have gone all the way down...it's all in my notes. I'm sure they're understandable, but feel free to call if any questions.
Hi, thank you for responding to my query. Do you remember the exact street or address where you grew up? and the location of Jackson Lane? I visited the location recently or so I thought and no houses remained. I am not related to the Jackson Family but I am a life-long resident of Jersey City. I have been researching the family for inclusion into the historic districts in Jersey City. Much of our past is being destroyed to make way for shopping centers and housing. I am trying to keep the legacy of the Jackson family alive. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi, in responding to your post. I grew up on the property of Thomas and John Vreeland and their underground rr safehouse. I lived between the 2 houses. They're still there, but weren't occupied by descendents when i grew up. But by 1873, they after the Jackson Lane was broken up into plots, they kept the land by the canal (the tracks when i grew up) And the last 3 houses on the block were occupied by 3 related African American families (In an otherwise segregated neighborhood). And those families, everyone knew, had been there since the canal, so i'm guessing they were descendents of the Jackson brothers. There was one other African American family on my section of the block, and there too, during very segregated and racist times, parents warned kids not to ever say anything negative to or about them because they were there since the 1800's, so they might also have been descendents. i didn't know about the undergound railroad as a child, or about the jackson brothers, but i wish i would have, i could have asked all the elders questions. Are you related to the Jackson family.

Thank you for the information. The Jacksons of my inquiry were Thomas (b 1800) and brother John (b 1803). The brothers lived in what was called Bergen, Hudson, New Jersey. Both were freed around 1828 or 1830 from what was called the Vreeland Estate in Greenville Village, NJ. The patriarch was George Vreeland.

The brothers are listed in the 1850 and 1860 census. Sometimes they are listed as black other times as Native Americans. They purchased land from a widow named Elizabeth Gautier and their home became a part of the underground railroad in the Greenville Section of Jersey City. I have been unable to find the brothers in any other census. Thanks again for your response, Dorothy

Vineland is a common NJ name (particularly in Morris County) so "Vreeland Estate" doesn't help much. 8-(

In 1850 Thomas Jackson b 1803 at NJ was living at Hackensack in the household of Cornelius Westervelt (b 1783 NY)- Thomas was a laborer and Westervelt a farmer.

There are several black laborers nearby (although not Jacksons)-next door is the farm of Jasper Westervelt (another farmer b 1788 NY) and Frank (16) and Leah Sisco (25)- black laborers- live in that household. Skip two houses and in farmer George Demarest's household is another laborer named William Sisco age 25. Looks like some free blacks worked as laborers.

On another page there are 34 blacks- including Hannah Jackson (33 b NJ) and three children 8 and below with no occupation listed and two houses away William (40 b NJ, boatman) and Maria (42 b NJ) Jackson with children Dinah 15 Thomas 12 Samuel 7 (all b NJ)

Two houses further is the Thomas J. Jackson household Thomas J. 39, Flora 41, Mary E. 20, Samuel, 18, Susan A. 16, Nicholas 14, Elizabeth 12, Phebe 8, Sara 6, Thomas, Fanny 3, John 23, James 25- Thomas J, Samuel, John and James are all boatmen; everyone born at NJ.

Next house is another John (28- boatman) Jackson, Susan 22, Edward 3 and Frances 1; all born NJ. Three neighbors (not black) are ship carpenters and a number of other black neighbors are boatmen.

Building stone was quarried at Closter, Alpine and Englewood until the 1940's. Sand and gravel have long been quarried at Wyckoff, Ramsey and Mahwah- those operations were active at least until 40 years ago. NJ has had a State Geologist office for more than a century- some reports are online and might have additional information.

Hope this helps- Bev Crifasi

Thanks so much for responding, but I am looking for Jacksons in Hackensack, Bergen COUNTY, not Bergen in HUDSON Co. Did I misunderstand you? I am trying to figure out something about the name of the quarry in Hackensack and its history. The person I am tracing is white, but he lived around these Jacksons whom I thought might have worked in the quarry and have some information in their family history (see my query above).

The history of Montclair, NJis that it was where many wealthy people moved who were employed by New York companies, and wanted to raise their families in the "country". It was said that after visiting New Jersey, many virginians went back to VA and packed up everything, including servants, and moved north. Afterward, they were called upon by others to send back home to VA for relatives who could also come north to work and would feel more inclined if they already had kinfolk working in the town already. There was a famous slave whose owner grant deeded him some property, the Howe House, which is a national treasure in Montclair today. Alice

I know my great-grandmother still has family out there but I've never met them. Feel free to check my tree for connections.
I recently found my step-grandmothers 1925 and 1927 diaries and the accompanying pictures. She lived in Atlantic City, NJ and wrote in great detail about her life and the lives of those in her elite circle. I have scanned all of the photos and am in the process of typing her diaries.

Her diary reveals that she worked for Mr. Montgomery Gregory
http://www.aaregistry.com/african_american_history/2045/Thom...

While esraching I came across AC historians.

Joi Dickerson-Neal
Looking for my biological father(Johnnie W Williams)

Greetings everyone,
Im updating my search as well as my e-mail address from Aug 2000.Im looking for my biological father that I have not seen in 43 yrs.I don't have much info, but this is all I have for now.His name is Johnnie W Williams. His birthplace is Rochester NY I've was told.In the 1960's he had a black Lincoln Contenital with the license plate JWW at that time, possible from NY,NJ,PA or the Delaware area.I list these states,
because at that time those states had the same color tags.So
I narrowed it down. Also in the 1960's he use to work at the Dawn Hotel/Motel in Harlem NY on 145 & St.Nicholas Ave.Also he knew some of my family members in Harlem, NY on 135 & Madison Ave,By the names of Liza & Thelma Larkins. My mother said he has alot of sons, one which have his name as well. Not sure if he have any daughter(s) besides me.I have enclosed a picture of him in my search for him. Click on the link below to see If you recognize this person in this picture PLEASE e-mail me ASAP.
My e-mail adress is-->Hereiaminny@aol.com
I'd like to thank you in advance!
