Hello, I am the person that was looking for information on Mary Underwood, of Richmond County, North Carolina. If you have anymore information on them, please let me know. I know that Mary Underwood, married James Russell, she had a son John Underwood, before she married James Russell, and I believe a daughter Rhoada. I am so interested in knowing who her parents were and if her maiden name was Underwood or if she married a Underwood. She has one maybe two children with the name Underwood.

Thank you Diana. Actually that would be my Grandmother's side of the family(Scott,Mumford, and Carter). My 2nd great grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Carter who was the daughter of Randolph Carter and Barbara Hockaday. I actually have the book that you are quoting from sitting beside me. Perhaps we are also related. I'm looking for my grandfather's people who came from NC as well.

The following is from the historical background provided by Austin Washington who is the current family historian for the Scott-Mumford-Carter families. Over the years they have extensively documented the families history. "John Hockaday was a farmer in or around Halifax County, NC. At approximately 30 years of age he took a mulatto as his mistress (her name has been lost to the ages). To this union three girls were born -- Caroline, Lieuvenia and Barbara. Caroline was the oldest being born about 1821. It appears that John died between 1850 and 1860 since he doesn not in the 1860 census. It also appears that he died leaving vry few possessions for no found was found. It appears that in the spring of 1844 he gathered his daughters and their families to announce his support of the he had planned them nrth and away from slavery."

The Scott patriarch was Jefferson Scott. He was born July 4, 1794 in Halifax County NC. He died in 1907 in Tiffin Ohio. His obituary stated that he still had a certificate from NC declaring that he was freeman. From the same document is stated that his father was full-blood Cherokke Indian and his mother a Mulatto. He was married to Caroline Hockaday. They came to Ohio with Caroline's sisters Barbara married Randall Carter and Lieuvenia who married William Mumford; Jefferson's brother Turner who was married Rebedda came at the same time.
Hi, I am interested in any information you might have on the Underwood line, coming from Richmond County,North Carolina. I have traced my roots back to Mary Undewood-Rusell, she married a James Russell, she was born in North Caroline, not sure if it was Richmond or some other county, as the county split back then. Mary Underwood was born in 1788 and was a free woman, at least when she appears in Terre Haute, Indiana. One of her son's was John Underwood, born in 1804 Richmond, County, NC, another son Brinkley Russell, with her husband James Russell. I would love to know more about Mary Underwood. You mentioned comparing notes, I would love to know what you have learned. Thanks, Sheila

Ancestry.com only has Marriage Records for a limited time periods in the various States; in the case of North Carolina, they mostly have the Marriage Bonds 1741-1868, as well as assorted Marriage Records for a few Counties under their NC Marriage Collection 1741-2004. Basically, if you're looking for marriages for anyone after 1868 in NC, you're not going to find them on Ancestry. My advice, don't limit your search for records under African American, marriage records on almost all sites cover whomever got married in any particular County.
The best place to look for Marriage Records is FamilySearch, a free website with a huge Collection of Marriages for many States, especially NC. Here is the link to the NC Marriages 1759-1979 Search Menu:
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/show#uri=http...

Put in the name you're looking for, click "Any" under the "Search by Life Events"; then put in the County (without the word "County") and North Carolina, then click Search.

Have fun.

Deloris Williams
Charity (NEE?) Weaver and son Thomas Weaver

Born in North Carolina in 1836, according to several census records, Charity Weaver married Jacob Bovender in 1859. Charity's son, Thomas Weaver, was born in 1856 in North Carolina. I don't know if Weaver is Charity's maiden name or a married name from a previous marriage. In various records she is listed as "black" or "mulatoo" and Thomas' daugher said he was African American and Native American. I can't find a birth record, previous marriage record or census record for Charity, or a birth record for Thomas. I don't know if before 1859 if Charity and Thomas were free or slaves. By 1860, they were living in Lawrence County, Ohio and two children are listed, Thomas and Mary both under the Bovender surname. Thomas is later found in Athen's county, Ohio and marries Willie Cooper. I could sure use some info to guide me to Charity's family. You can reach me at moonchant48@gmail.com

Charity married Jacob Bovender in 1859 in Yadkim Co., North Carolina. By 1860, they were living in Lawrence County, Ohio and two children are listed, Thomas and Mary both under the Bovender surname. Thomas is later uses his mother's maiden surname or former husband's surname of Weave and is found in Athen's county, Ohio and he is married to Willie Cooper. I could sure use some info to guide me to Charity's family. I have quite a bit of information about the Cooper, Bovender, Woodson, and Hemings families of this lineage, and would be glad to share. You can reach me at moonchanter48@gmail.com
Thank you for your suggestions. I done most of the things you've suggested. I know that Charity married Jacob and was with him until he died. She that remarried a Mr. Howard in Feyette, Lawrence Co., Ohio and died as his wife. I'm down to making lists of all of the "Charity," "Charity A.," and "Charity Ann* in Yadkim, Surry and surrounding counties in the 1850 census and then determine if they were still in the 1860 census under the same name, had died, married other than Weaver (Wever) husbands and if they are still in North Carolina in 1860 since I know Charity and Jacob were in Ohio by the 1860 census.
I know she wasn't the Ash Co. Charity Weaver because she ends up in Oregon. The one I'm seeking stayed in OHio until her death.

You need to research of both the WEAVER & BOVENDER surnames in the Counties where first the marriage took place and second, in the County where JACOB BOVENDER was living prior to 1860; see if and when the surnames showed up in the locations. Also, have you looked for a CHARITY WEAVER in the 1850 Census in North Carolina? Just doing a quick search for both persons names, I found JACOB in Surry Co., NC in 1850, where he was first listed in 1830, so that was apparently where his family was from. In 1850, I find a CHARITY WEAVER, age 23 (b. 1827) living with parents(?) ISAAC & JANE WEAVER, (family misspelled in the Census record as WEVER)in Ashe Co., NC. The family wasn't around in 1860. Yadkin was formed in 1850 from Surry Co. and Ashe, Surry and Yadkin are all very near one another and it certainly is feasible that families living in one of the Counties would have married in either locations. And although the CHARITY WEAVER in 1850 is about 10 years older than the one you mention, it wouldn't be the first time a woman has lied about her age, especially after she married. It's something I've often run across and isn't something that wouldn't let me consider the possibility as a match, if one can find other records that can bear out that suspicion about her identity.
You should also do some researching of Marriage and Death Records in Ohio for THOMAS WEAVER to see if his parents may be listed on something, or if CHARITY by any chance survived to the time when death records were kept. There are some Marriage Index or Registers online at Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org, and if you find one for THOMAS that doesn't have the parents names, I would send for copies of the actual marriage license, if available, to see what it says.
If you've never used FamilySearch, which is free, they have a lot of online records that are very helpful in family research, which includes many actual images of records for all the States and many Countries around the World.

https://www.familysearch.org/

Put in the Name of the Person you want to research, then click "Any" beside -Search for Life Events; once that comes down, add the County and State (without the word -County), then click SEARCH.

Deloris Williams
I have a relative named "Minnie," supposedly born abt 1861 in South Carolina though. She's in this census along with Charlie and Mattie. Her last name was supposedly Hendrick.

It seems most of my Rudisill family stayed in Lincoln, NC for a few generations. Do you know if Charlie was from there?

Thank you so much, I am very proud of my gr gr gr grandfather and what he accomplished, I have been in communication with Wynona Batton, for a few years, it was nice to read what she had to say about the family and I would like to go to the Cemetery sometime this summer. I wonder from whom Mary Underwood-Russell decends from, that may be another trip to Richmond County, North Caroline, to see if I can find out who her parents were. I would be on cloud nine if I found out. Thanks again, Sheila

Rudisill family, Lincoln NC slaves

Hi Everyone!

I've traced part of my family back to the mid 1800s in Lincoln, North Carolina. I'm looking for more information on my great great great grandfather, Dock Rudisill, a black man, born in 1855.

I've found information on a group of Rudisills who came from Germany in the 1700s and settled in Lincoln. I'm looking for any documentation of their slaves, as I'm guessing Dock, or perhaps his father, was a slave.

Thanks!

The earliest absolute proof I have on any Winbuns in Ohio starts in 1870. There was a group that moved from North Carolina to Indiana in the early 1800. They did eventually settle in Ross County. I'm about 75% sure she is related. I do have a family in Indiana with the last name Winburn, in 1840-1860 that most of the people match up in my Winbun match up to. However, still no Elizabeth or anything close to it. I just can't seem to place her no matter how hard I try. I know she has to fit some where!

Her marriage record says her father is Henry Winbun. If you've found the father with his family in the census prior to her marriage, did he have a daughter the age that Elizabeth was supposed to be? One thing about the ancestors was that they did not always call the children by the same name that they were known by later, it could be a middle name or a childhood name used; and there were also a lot of nicknames for names like Elizabeth. For instance, I've had a lot of ancestors who had daughters named "Mary Elizabeth", some years they were called "Mary" and other years it would be "Elizabeth", I didn't know that until I studied the census from year to year. "Elizabeth" had a lot of variations used in the past: Eliza, Lizzie, Betsy, Betty, Beth, Bet, for instance, a lot of people don't realize that and often skip over persons they are looking for.

Deloris

Thanks! I'm on Familysearch. I'm actually doing some indexing for the 1940's census. I see the Haithcocks in Ross and I see Elizabeth with her father being Henry. I just can't find any record of Elizabeth or anything close. Which is odd, because everyone else is accounted for since 1850. I know she has to be related but I'm not sure where she fits. Thanks again for the help. Sometime the little things help!
