I am looking for any information on my great grandfather Duncan Moore. My grandmother was only 4 yrs. old when he died and her brothers and sister were all children, so they did not know much about their father and I am carrying a name of a man who's entire family I know NOTHING about. I was told that he may have gotten into trouble with the law,ran away from NC, met my great grandmother, Irene,in SC and settled down with her. I was told that he probably came from Rowland, NC (Robeson County, NC). He came to Pamplico, SC (which was called Orum back in the early 1900s). As of now, I am stuck, because I've come across two possible answers to my story. I found a record for a Duncan Moore, whose entire family is listed as "Mulatto" (with white or Native ancestry?) and he came from an area called Welchs Creek in Columbus County NC, which is not very far from Robeson County, where it is believed to have been the place where 'my' Duncan was from. Also, the date inwhich he was born (abt. 1873) seems just a little closer than the other Duncan (abt. 1869, though in other records the other Duncan IS listed as 1872, so that's not much of a difference). The number two Duncan I found, was from the Union, Pender, and Hanover County, NC area (close to Wilmington, which is further from Robeson County and Rowland)and he is listed as "black." People back then traveled a lot for work, and although it is further, than Duncan One, it's not impossible. I know that phenotypes and genes are funny, but looking at my grandmother and her siblings, it's more than likely, that Duncan was probably black and not mulatto, though the mulatto Duncan came from two mulatto parents and not a "pure" mulatto himself. Because of this I have not ruled him out, because my greatgrandma was a dark skinned woman. So, what do I do? I made two different trees using both Duncans as the home person. The only thing really different in both trees is where each Duncan first came from (or the first data I found) and the names of his parents. I've tried to search for other census records that could differentiate between the two, perhaps one that shows one Duncan in Welchs, NC in 1920 or vise versa, because according to the records, my Duncan was in SC, married to my greatgrand mother and living with my grandmother and her sister, but the 1920s Census only shows ONE Duncan. Which one, I don't know. I have searched for criminal records, for his possible time in prison, hoping that would help, but to no avail. If anyone has any advice or knows anything about a Duncan Moore who may have come from or near the area of a small town called, Rowland, NC in Robeson County in about 1870 and moved to Orum,Cains,Pamplico, SC in Marion/Florence County SC,in the early 1900s let me know. Duncan Moore married Irene Hyman and they had Gardenia Moore, Aggie Lee Moore, Ned Moore, and Harvey Moore together. My great grandmother had her eldest child, Grover Guiles, before she was married.
