Re: Missing Sanders/Sowders in Jackson Mississippi

would suggest you might being by checkin both the 1860 slave Schedule and Federal Census to see whether or not there was a slave owner by that surname, there could be more than one. After emancipation people actually tended to stay in the area for a while often working as share croppers for their earlier owner. If the owner died prior to emancipation chances are he may have left a will and inventory. If that is the case, it might be on file either at the local court house or a copy at the MS His. Society. It could be that slaves may have been named in both the inventory and or will.

You will probably find that you have several people with the same first and last names, so don't be surprised if that occurs. If you have access to ancestry.com, besure and check the WWI Draft and Civilian Draft cards as they give quite a bit of information also.

Sanders was also spelled Saunders, so keep that in mind also. The census takers were pretty good about getting around to all the farms and homes in 1870 as the Federal Government was still active but by 1880 on ward things got sloppy. Many people who were listed as Mulatto in 1870 were simply listed as black or Negro in 1880. Your ancestor may not have had a family as such, so he might be living with other ex-slaves in 1870 also.

Judy
Missing Sanders/Sowders in Jackson Mississippi

I am looking for information about my 2XGreat-Grandfather Willie Sanders from Jackson, Mississippi.

Only information that I know is he was born about 1891 in Mississippi (more than likely Jackson, Mississippi). He had my great-grandmother, Beatrice Rose Sanders (born March 16th,1918), with Rosie Sanders (maiden name unknwon. born about 1893).

The story goes when my great-grandmother was 2 years old he left the family and wasn't heard or seen from again. I was also able to find a 1920 census for him, with Beatrice and Rosie, but nothing before or after that. I don't know his parent's name or if he had any siblings, either.

If anyone has any information about Willie Sanders I would love to hear from you. My great-grandmother is alive, 95, and is the last surviving member of that generation of my family, and I feel it would be great news to give her and share with her.

Information on Ella, possible Slave.

Ella is my 3X Great-Grandmother. I'm looking for information about her ancestors, particularly her immediate family (parents and siblings).

I have no information for Ella before 1900 and no information for her after 1920. I do know that she was born in 1858 and I have nothing in regards to her surname/maiden name or family members (making things difficult). Census list parents birthplaces, Mississippi for father and Tennessee for Mother.

From my family history, I know that she had a child with Benjamin Young (born 1850), named Ben Young (my 2X Great-Grandfather, born around 1884). I'm unsure if they were married or not, or anything else in regards to the nature of their relationship.

She eventually remarried, in 1893, to Albert Ellis (born 1850), according to the 1900 census. This census also shows that she had another son with the last name of Young, named Charles (he's not known to anyone in my family), born 1883.

Family history also has 4 names (Howard, Frank, Tuck and Susie), all but Tuck are listed on the 1900 census and I am unsure if they are her biological children or her husband's from a previous relationship.

Family history states she may have been a slave and then freed, which explains why it's hard to find her, but I'm unsure due to her supposed birthdate. So anything from hints of a possible maiden, anything before 1900 or after 1920 for Ella is appreciated.

Youngs in Mississippi

I am looking for information on my 3XGreat-Grandfather, Benjamin Young from Mississippi (more than likely around the Jackson area).

The only information that I have for him is that he was born around 1850 in Mississippi. He had a child with Ella (born in Mississippi on Jun 1858 maiden name unknown, future surname Ellis) named Ben Young born Dec 1885 in Jackson, Mississippi (Ben is my 2XGreat-grandfather). I'm also unsure if Benjamin and Ella young were married, since I have been unable to find any information, nor anyone in my family knows.

Outside of my family knowledge, they may have had another child named Charles (he shows up on a census with Ella and her husband Albert Ellis, as "Charles Young/step-son").

Other than the above, I don't know anything else about Benjamin Young. If you have any leads or information about him and his family (ancestors), would be greatly appreciated.

Surname Lollis/Lawless in Mississippi

I'm looking for information about the ancestors of my 3XGreat-Grandmother Octavia Lollis or Lawless.

Octavia was born March 1860 in Mississippi (more than likely around the Jackson area). So far, I have been able to gather information for her from 1876 (when she got married to Will Jones, produced 9 children) to 1930.

In regards to her immediate family, I know that she is 1 of 6 children (2 sisters and 3 brothers), names all unknown. For her parents records show that they where born in either Kentucky or Mississippi (birth dates unknown and names unknown).

Another thing, on some of the census, she is listed as Mulatto.

If you have any information, hints or records for Octavia Lollis or Lawless before 1876, it would be greatly appreciated. Any leads on a death record, likely after 1930, would be great too.

Looking for Mississippi Jones.

I'm looking for information about 2 different (as far as I know) Jones family lines on my mother's side of the family.

1). The first Jones I'm needing information for is my great-grandfather Johnny or John Jones. He is my grandmother's (my mother's mom) biological father, she was give up for adoption by her mother, Mary Lee Thompson (born 1926).

My grandmother was born in Bolton, Mississippi (rural town close to Jackson, Mississippi) on November 16th, 1944 (she's the oldest of twin girls). Johnny Jones and Mary Lee weren't married and I'm not sure if John had any previous marriages before my grandmother was born.

I have been told though that he eventually did get married, spouse name unknown, and that my grandmother has at least 4 half-sibilings from this union. The half-siblings are Johnny, Stella, Caroline and Rod/Rob. Johnny (female) was the oldest and had two children, as far as I know, named Angela and Anthony. Stella, had a boy and a girl (names unknown). Caroline had a son (name unknown). And it's unknown to me if Rod/Rob had any children.

The information I'm needing for him is birthday and death and immediate family (parents and/or siblings, if applicable).

2). The second Jones I'm needing information for is for the family members and ancestors of Will Jones (my 3XGreat-grandfather on my mothers father's side). I have information on Will from 1876 (when he married Octavia Lollis/Lawless, producing 9 children) until 1930.

I've been able to find that he was born Feb 1857 in Mississippi. I know that he had one sister, Roxie Jones born around 1868 in Mississippi, and that she married Ed Mayes and had 3 children (as far as we know) with him. I am unsure if he had any other sibling’s outside of her.

I know that their parent's (names unknown) were probably born around the 1830's. The records that I do have show that his mother was born in Mississippi as well and that his father was born in either Virginia or Mississippi.

Also, depending on the census, he is sometimes listed as Mulatto. I'm really wanting to find more information about his immediate family (parents and other siblings) and also the date of his death.

Any information on any of these lines would be helpful so I can continue to trace my family tree back and find new ancestors/family members in the process! Thank you!

That is a great idea. My experience has been as follows. I am a researcher for a Low Dutch Congregation which migrated from New York to Conewago PA and then down to Mercer Co. KY in the late 1700's. Two members of the KY congregation, in 1840 moved to Hinds Co. MS for reasons unknown, where they married and then moved on up to Leake Co. MS. They became slave owners, one remaining in MS and the other moving to Bossier Parish, LA. One of the descendants of the Leake Co. slaves asked if I would help her find out about her ancestors, the Vanarsdales, and from that the project expanded to both owners and their slaves in both states. So I learned a lot along the way, and that was what I was sharing with you.

It can be difficult to obtain information in MS depending on the country you are researching, which is why I suggested that sometimes you have to gather information, i.e. deeds, wills, mortgages (for sure check these, as slaves were often mortgaged), marriages etc. of the master and sometimes you will be able to gather information on his slaves or ex-slaves. There is a book by Gregory Boyd, called Family Maps of Copiah and another called Family Maps of Hinds Co., which may show the land purchase and farm holdings of John W. Moses. You could probably contact the public libraries and see if they have a copy and if they do, perhaps they might be willing to copy the pages. Their charges are usually minimal. But it would give you an idea of where this place was located.

A brochure will really be appreciated by everyone, and often will lead to further information. I ended up compiling a book actually and family members donated information to that. I donated the deeds and other papers, the ones for Leake Co. Attala Co. and Madison Co. to the Attala Co. Public library and the Louisiana papers to Southern University. I let the families choose because I wanted them to be in a location where they would be used.

Some county and historical officials are more cooperative than others; some counties recorded mostly information on their white residents and not so much on their African American residents prior to 1960, so it can be difficult.
Things were different then. I ran into some road blocks along the way, historical societies who didn't get back to me, even when I called and they said they would do something or obtain something I needed, but then I had a super librarian, Ann Breedlove in Attala Co. who was just remarkable, so it all equaled out.

Have fun with it, and I hope your family reunion will be fruitful. You might alert family members in advance so they can bring their family documents with them. Perhaps you will have the chance to make copies while they are there to take home with you and go over at a later date. Often this is the time when pieces of the puzzle come together.

Judy

I was happy to help you out. It was helpful that there was a lot of information and that they all remained in the area. I am sure, as I mentioned, that you can expand your search farther at the county level or at the MS Hist. Soc. in Jackson. In addition, another good source of information after 1900 are the WWI draft cards which usually give the name, age, address and person whom to contact for the draftee.

Good luck

Judy

I see that in 1900, that Roda, wife of Bo or Bozen/Bogan, was married previously to some one Marshall, as the Marshall children are Bogans step children. That also makes sense about Laura.

This is a huge family for sure, and they all seemed to stay in the Hinds County area. I wonder if any descendants are still living there? You might check that out and see. If so, they might be able to fill in some gaps for you. Also often the local public library is a big help, depending on the genealogical librarian.

It is all worth a try.

Judy

You are more than welcome. Somewhere in Hinds is a cemetery, where your ancestors are probably buried.

In the census records, everyone is recorded as black, so I am just guessing that John W. Moses, was no one's father. The census takers in the 1870's were more careful with their entries than in later dates. I checked the freeman's bureau for marriages, found nothing.

I will say, that I researched another slave family and their owners, the owners originated in Hinds and then moved up to Leake. This family did have a recorded slave sale in Hinds in the 1840's, so you might also be lucky. But again, you will have to check both counties.

Since Austin was living next door to John M. Moses, he was actually probably living on his land and farming for him. The others were either renting from someone, sharecropping for someone etc. So I have found many deeds of trust in other counties also. I don't know where you live, however, if any of your family still lives in the area and are able to drive to Jackson to the State Historical Society, they might be able to find more.

Since you are a novice, you might check out Louis Gates, The Root on line as well as watch, Finding Your Roots which will be coming in either April or May, both are excellent and educational for someone seeking their slave ancestors.

Judy

Bozin is probably your Bogan. Names were spelled as they sounded to the census taker, most slaves could neither read or write, it was against the law for anyone to teach them to do so. So it is important to take into account any and all spellings and mis-spellings.

Most likely John W. Moses did not actually move from Copiah to Hinds, rather his part of Copiah probably became Hinds when the county line was moved. He was just a small farmer actually. Now living in Copiah was a William Neil and a Henry O'Neal, so perhaps they actually owned some of Harriets children and or she had a relationship with one of their slaves. Slaves were not normally permitted to legally marry before emancipation, so her children could have taken the fathers name. Sometimes they were permitted to have a little ceremony, but mostly not. Depended on the Master.

It is not uncommon for people to recall their mothers side of the family more than the fathers, as mothers often told the stories. However, if there is a family Bible, you might find information with in those pages.

Your best bet really is the Mississippi Historical Society in Jackson. You can also go there in person, but they have microfilm of all county records, so you would want to check both Copiah and Hinds just in case there was a bill of purchase. John W. Moses didn't sell his adult slaves, but I bet he sold the children from time to time.

That is about all I could find at the moment.

Judy

That's 1 of my dilemma's i'm not sure of the connections but I guess in time I'll learn that.

My grandparents lived in Raymond, I used to visit there as a child and the house is still there. There are 4 of their children still living, Rachel, Lucial, Victoria and Alter; all in their 90s. They don't remember a lot about the Moses they remember more about the maternal side.

One of my cousins told me about a Rody and how someone was called Rody Rhodes, and they lived in the D'Lo area

Chances are that Harriet did not have a maiden name, she is using the surname of her master as were other former slaves of J. W Moses.

In the 1850 Slave census for J. W. Moses, he owned three slaves: 1 Male age 21, 1 Female age 30 and 1 male age 35. Then in 1860 he owned 6 slaves, 1 Female age 39 who was probably Harriet, 1 Male age 35, 1 maled age 26, 1 female age 21, 1 Male age 4, and 1 male age 1 year ( who may have been David). But then that opens the door to the question: Where were Harriet's other children born before 1860, which would be Laura b. 1844-1850, Jno. b. 1852, Archy b. 1854, Rachel b. 1856 and Bogan born 1858. The 4 year old male could have been either Bogan or Archy. This leads to the speculation that perhaps they had beens old and were owned by someone else. That being said, whom ever owned them lived in the immediate area because they are reunited by 1870. Harriets son Alfred Moses who may have been Archy and wife Dolly were living next door to Harriet. Not only that in 1870 living next to John M. was another one of his slaves, Austin age 44 and his wife Lucinda age 35. Austin most likely was the male age 26 in the 1860 census.
There is also a Jeff Moses living in Bolton, age 48 and wife Jane 43 and their children or her children. This man may have been the male slave age 35 in the 1860 slave census. Ages are always speculative as I mentioned.

So, it appears that when the slaves of J. M. Moses were emmanciapated, they retained the Moses surname and remained in the area near their old master.

By 1880, Harried age 50 and her younger children David, Henry, Bill and Hally are living together, next door to Alf and his wife Dolly and their children. David and his younger brothers and sistrs are known as O'Neil in this census. I don't find an O'neil, ONeal slave owner, so I am not sure why they used this surname. But Harriet is never known as Harriet O'Neil. Laura, age 30 and now a widow, is living with her brother and your ancester, Bozin, age 23 and his wife Roda age 20 and their two children, Willie Mac 6 and Jolnie Mac age 3. It is possible that Roda was married to a someone MAC prior to her marriage to Bozin.

Some of these men are working as tenant farmers, and the Recorder of deeds might have Deeds of Trust for them, which were contracts between them and those they worked for. The Mississippi Historical Society, in Jackson, can be contacted and for a fee they will check the microfilm for old records for your family. I can't recall if you fill out the form on line or they send it to you first. But you might check that out.

They all seemed to have remained in the Dry Grove or Raymond Mississippi area until 1900 when Harriet moved to Vicksburg.

It is great you are having a family reunion, hopefully there will be some relatives who might have family stories and recall some of these events, so it is a great idea to take a recording device or computer so you can write them all down and document who said what.

Let me do a little more checking and see what I might have missed.

Thanks much for your guidance!

We are having a family reunion in Jackson, MS this year. It would be great to make the slavery connection or not to bring to the family.

I will research JW Moses and I'm wondering if the family is still living in Raymond.

I wondered why the children names changed to Oneil too?

I hadn't thought the 1900 record where she had a lodger was connected but I saved it.

I also found a baptism record don't know if its a match

Let me give you some background:
Harriet would be my great great grandmother, her son Bogan (1870 census) is my great grandfather and his son Lee (1900 census) is my grandfather and his daughter Elizabeth is my mother (1940 census)

Thanks

John W. Moses was still living in 1870, I did go back and check that. It is important to know, that often you have to do the genealogy not just of your family, but also the family of the slave owner, to a point. So you will need to look up information in the census and in County deeds or wills on both families as often they are intertwined.

Judy

Hi, I checked this out on Ancestry.com and here is what I discovered.

Living in Gallatin, Copiah, Miss. was a John W. Moses age 44 and his wife Emeline age 25. He was from Georgia. They are listed also in the 1860 census for Raymond, Hinds Co. MS. In the 1860 Slave Census for Raymond, Hinds Co. MS, he owned 6 slaves, two women, one age 39 and the other age 21. Copiah is next to or near Hinds Co.

Harriet Moses, was age 45 in 1870 and said that she was from N. Carolina, Her children were, Laura 26, Jno. 18, Archy 16, Rachel 14 all born in NC. Ragan 12, David 10, Bill and Haley were born in Mississippi.

In the 1880 Raymond, Hinds Co. Census, Harriet said she was born in Virginia a widow, and living with her was David O'Neil, 19, her son, Henry O'Neil 17, son, Bill O'Neil 12, son, and they were living next door to Alf Moses, age 33 and his wife Dollie age 27, and their children Mozel 9, Elsie 13, Lonel age 1. I don't know why the children are using the surname O'Neil while she is known by the surname Moses.

By 1900, Harriet Moses is living alone with a boarder, age 60 in Vicksburg, MS. supp. born in Jan. 1840.

Now chances are good that Harriet was a slave of John W. Moses. Ages are always tricky, as slaves often did not know their exact age or accepted the age given by their owner who may have been guessing.

I would suggest that perhaps you might write to Hinds Co. or to the Miss. State Archives in Jackson, MS, and see if John W. Moses may have died prior to 1865 as if he did, perhaps his slaves were named in his inventory and or will.

Whether or not he brought Harriet with him when he moved from Georgia or purchased her once he got to Mississippi we don't know. I did not check the 1850 slave census.

I hope this helps you.

Judy
I'm trying to find the next step I should take to find my great great grandmother Harriet Moses. I found her in the 1870 and 1880 census trying to find her earlier and I know that may not be her maiden name.

She lived in Hinds County, MS Raymond area and was 45/50 in those census. It does not list a husband
