Surnames: Burt Birt Burk Burkes

I have been trying since 2008 to find the mysterious Johnnie Burt Jr. who I am told married Mary Brown (b. abt 1905) and are parents of Lillie Mae Burt (b. 1920) who is my grandmother .Johnnie Burt records in the census but I have no idea how to figure out which is the correct person and where to go from there. The only thing I know about Johnnie is that he was medium build, ruddy skin color, may have been a farmer and may be cherokee according to my uncle. His family is rumored to have never been enslaved. I got this information from my grandmother's funeral program and I have a copy of their marriage license in Clay C. 1918 and need help finding additional records linking the two together so I can figure out where he was born and who his parents were. So far the clues I have are: 1.) 1900 census showing William and Sarah Burt with children Mary, Devotie, Johnnie, Susan and Savannah - Clay Co. 25/3A, West Point. 2.) 1910 census there's a 14-year-old John Burt with an uncle in Copiah County. 3.) 1920 has John and Ella next to John Jr. and Mary with baby Susie. If you know of any Burt's that can help or can provide any research tips I will be forever grateful. I am researching from Michigan.
