This family had "deep" roots in the adjoining southern Arkansas counties of Calhoun and Ouachita. 1870 Census indicates Charles "Brazil" (ca. 1830) and Brunetta (ca. 1835) were parents of Thomas (ca. 1865) among others. Thomas married Adaline Henry (29 Dec 1886) and they had Thomas Henry (10 Apr 1889) among others. Thomas Henry wed Martha (30 Dec 1922) and they had the sons mentioned in the obit.
Detroit Church Info Request

I have been told by a family member that my grandfather, Solomon Ford was a Pastor at the Mack Avenue Church of God in Christ,located in Detroit Michigan. The time frame would be in the late 1920's. Solomon Ford died 25 April 1929 and supposedly had his funeral at the same church. I am interested in finding out if this church is still around (the exact address) and some history of the church (especially during the late 1920's).

Ben Ford

I am searching for information about my great-grandfather Ben Ford. His place of birth (and date) is unknown and his place of death (and date is unknown). I am trying to confirm the name of his wife and I am seeking to find out if Ben Ford had any brothers or sisters. Some known facts that are known that might assist are as follows:

Ben had five childred:
Solomon Ford (my grandfather) an African American of light complexion born in Russellville, Alabama in 1895, and died in Detroit, Michigan in 1929. According to Solomon’s marriage record (marriage to Willie B. Hogan Smith on March 27, 1922 in Detroit, Michigan), Solomon’s father is listed only as Ben and his mother was listed as Mattie Nick.

Ellen Ford, an African American born in Alabama in1890 (possibly Tuscumbia, Alabama, where she resided in 1910). Her race is listed as Mulatto on the census. She eventually married (possibly John Johns or John Jones) and migrated to Detroit, Michigan in the 1920’s.

Joseph Ford, an African American born in Alabama in 1895 (possibly in Tuscumbia, Alabama). He eventually migrated to Detroit, Michigan in the 1920’s.

David Ford, an African American born in Alabama about 1891. He moved to the Chicago area and is believed to have joined the Nation of Islam and changed his name to David Farad.

Susan Ford, an African American born in Alabama about 1887.

Additional notes: some of the listed brothers/sisters are listed as Mulatto on the census. The mother has been identified as Patsy but the census lists her last name as Fort. It appears that it could have been a misinterpretation of the census writing.
Hi! What a surprise to see a reply to my post from 2001! I had forgotten about it, but I'm so glad you saw it. After leaving the post, I received contact information for your dad from another relative, and actually spoke to him briefly in early 2002. I sent a follow-up letter a few months later and included a family photo that included his maternal grandmother (your great-grandmother) Mary Boulware Chapman. I have been researching the Chapmans for about 10 years now, but I'm still lacking a lot of information. I would love to correspond with you in the future - I'm hoping you can help me fill in some blanks! I live in Ventura County, just north of you. Hope your dad is doing well (I estimate he's about 85 years old now). My email address is below - please reply when you get a chance!

Cheryl Hayes
cherylchayes@gmail.com

Seeking Michigan is Online!

The Archives of Michigan is pleased to announced a new site: www.seekingmichigan.org! Among other things, you'll find digitized maps, photos, oral histories, blue prints, sheet music, Civil War records and Michigan death records. There's also a blog (named "Look") and a "Teach" section for educators.

More details can be found in the official press release, which I've pasted below.

Bob Garrett, Archivist
Archives of Michigan
E-mail: garrettr1@michigan.gov

**************************************************************************

Following is a news release issued by the Department of History, Arts and Libraries today.

'Seeking Michigan' Web site employs today's technology to deliver Michigan's history to information seekers

The Department of History, Arts and Libraries today announced the launch of the Seeking Michigan Web site (www.seekingmichigan.org), a growing collection of unique historical information that - through digitized source documents, maps, films, images, oral histories and artifacts - creatively tells the stories of Michigan's families, homes, businesses, communities and landscapes.

Seeking Michigan's first major project is the digitization of roughly 1 million death records covering the years 1897 through 1920. These records - never before available electronically - are indexed for easy searching by name, death date, location and age, and hold tremendous research opportunities for genealogists, historians and students.

Whether they are interested in Civil War records, photographs, architecture, music, photography or family history, Michigan enthusiasts are sure to discover a brand new side to Michigan through this unique online resource, a collaboration that has long been in the making between the Archives of Michigan and the Library of Michigan. Site design and digitization of resources were funded through various grants.

"Seeking Michigan takes great information from both of our agencies and makes it available to everyone in a convenient and easy-to-navigate Web site," said State Librarian Nancy R. Robertson. "We were inspired by the state motto in designing the site. If you look, you will discover stories, photos and much more to connect you to our state's pleasant peninsulas and one-of-a-kind past."

With plans in place to add much more material, Seeking Michigan currently includes:

-More than 100,000 pages of Civil War documents;
-Approximately 10,000 photographs;
-A variety of Michigan sheet music;
-Roughly 1 million death records;
-A rich section about Michigan's 44 past governors;
-Works Progress Administration data (circa 1936-1942) about land and buildings throughout rural Michigan; and
-Oral histories with notable Michigan residents.

According to Sandra Clark, director of the Michigan Historical Center, Seeking Michigan boldly moves the archives and library experience outside of the bricks and mortar of the building in which the collections are housed. By employing the latest Web technologies and social media, the site aims for an enhanced user experience. "We want to give visitors historical content and, whenever possible, the context for that content," she explained. "For K-12 educators, there's also a 'teach' page that links up with related resources and grade-level content expectations."

Clark noted that Seeking Michigan will open up Michigan's history to a whole new market of information hunters. "Seeking Michigan is definitely a big boost for those who already have an interest in our state's history, including scholars, authors, genealogists and publishers," she said. "What we're very excited about is the prospect of introducing new generations of Michigan residents to the Michigan they thought they knew and helping them forge connections with our state's remarkable past."

Seeking Michigan was made possible with generous funding from the Talbert and Leota Abrams Foundation, a Lansing-based nonprofit that primarily focuses on funding library and educational science programs. Since the mid-1980s, the Abrams Foundation has provided more than $2.5 million toward the development of the Library of Michigan's and Archives of Michigan' genealogy collection, including the digitization of the death records so crucial to family historians' research efforts. The National Historic Publications and Records Commission provided additional funding.
The Library of Michigan Foundation (www.michigan.gov/lmfoundation) and the Michigan History Foundation (www.michigan.gov/mhfoundation) helped facilitate the funding process for Seeking Michigan and provide donors the opportunity to contribute to Seeking Michigan and many other initiatives.

The Archives of Michigan is part of the Michigan Historical Center. The Michigan Historical Center and the Library of Michigan are agencies within the Department of History, Arts and Libraries (HAL). Dedicated to enriching quality of life and strengthening the economy by providing access to information, preserving and promoting Michigan's heritage and fostering cultural creativity, HAL also includes the Mackinac Island State Park Commission and the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.
Recommendation! Both deceased relatives are listed on SSDI. Gerald's date of death listed as 30 Dec 2006. Perhaps you can request the local reference librarian-Saint Joseph, MI-lookup his newspaper obituary? Occasionally, survivors' city and state are listed. Without exception, the funeral home responsible for services will be listed. A call to the mortician may help locate him who you seek? Good luck! Also, try US Search if you have enough personal info to positively identify the party?

Major Cook: African-American b. 1808 in Virginia, d. 1872 in Detroit, Michigan

I am looking for information on the Cook Family of Richmond, VA.

My great-great-great grandfather's name was Major Cook.

He was born about 1808 in Richmond, Virginia.

He married Priscilla Bramhall in 1832 in Charles City, Virginia.

In 1848, he mirgrated with his wife and five children to Detroit, Michigan, where he worked as a shoemaker.

He died in 1872 and his wife died in 1874, both in Detroit.

This family was counted as "mulattos" or "free persons of color" in all census records that I've come across.

I am convinced however that with such a unique name, my ancestor, Major Cook, must have some connection to the family of George Major Cook, former chief of the Pamunkeys.

The photos of George Major Cook and his family (found on the freeafricanamericans.com website) bear a striking resemblence to my ancestors of that same era.

Aside from his marriage record to Priscilla, I have not been able to find any other family records on Major Cook or his family members (i.e. parents, siblings, etc.)

He is also listed on the 1840 U.S. Census in Henrico County, VA. From 1850-1870, he is on the U.S. Census in Detroit.

Whatever information that anyone might have that would shed some light on this mystery would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
Sharon
I am a descent of Alice Chase (Collins). Do you know of William E. Chase ever being called "Earnest"? In the 1870 Census for Township of Columbus in St. Clair County, Michigan (just across the river from Ontario), an Earnest Chase (age 37); Margaret (age 24); and William (age 5) appear. Earnest and Margaret are listed as being born in Canada, and William in Michigan, perhaps in this county. Earnest is listed a farm laborer, who does not own his own land. Alice is not yet born, but I believe she, too was born in Michigan, but I find no record of her birth in St. Clair County.

I have always heard that Margaret (Harrison) Chase was a full-blooded Indian, and that William E. Chase was a white Canadian. I have no records as of now to indicate this.

Please contact me if you have any further information. Thanks! Kathryn Wegner

Oren Van Loon of Berkley, Mich. ~ Branded by the Klan in 1924

After preaching a sermon condemning Klan cross burning near Berkley, Michigan, a Detroit suburb, Reverend Oren Van Loon received this indelible souvenir in 1924. (photo on website)

I am not related to this family, just passing on this information I found while doing research on Lynchings. I apologize to the family of Oren, but this information needs to be shared.
Box of pictures rescued

A gentleman purchased a fridge at an auction. In the fridge was a box of pictures. There is only writing on one of the back of the pictures, a Juliet (aka) Julie Wilson who went to school at a Hampton Middle School, possibly in Detroit? There is one photo that is rather prominent, it is of an African American gentleman with light eyes. He is a rather handsome man, alas no name listed on the back.

Please contact me, if a potential match seems evident. I will hold onto these for as long as it takes to get them back to Juliet? or member of the family.

Andi

There is a site especially for the state of Georgia as well as a surname listing, family genealogy page and a vital records project. This site is constantly growing. The two requirements of the site are that all data be of African American descent and not be controversial.

Please take a moment to visit the site.
