Hi

My great great grandfather was Mitchell Harris of Athens, LA. He was born to a single woman name Mima Holt born to F. Holt and Mariah Holt.

Through DNA testing, I am possibly directly descended from Wiley Holland Gandy of Athens. My DNA match is predicted as a fourth cousin, which means that we share the same third great grandparent(s). With Wiley being my possible great great great grandfather, it shows that me and my DNA match are indeed fourth cousins. Also John Achilles Harris is also a Gandy through his mother Piety Bunn Gandy, but I'm not sure if I'm possibly descended from John Harris.

Hope to hear back from you!!

Hi

I'm researching my Grigsby family located in 1900 under Benjamin R. Grigsby m. to Charlotte Robinson Mitchell. They had one son Ben Joshua Grigsby in 1901. It also appears that Benjamin had another son earlier with the same name = Ben Joshua Grisby married to Fannie. If anyone has any informaton on Benjamin R. Grigsby or this branch of Grisby's, any help would be appreciated.

BTW, Ben Joshua Grigsby was married at least 3 times to:
Blanch Jones, Luevata Kilgore and Lois Armstrong. however I have been unable to trace his whereabouts in 1920 and 1930.

Don't know if this fits but here is an excerpt from my ancestor's journal about an encounter with a John R. Taylor in Shreveport, 1848.

Friday 21st April 1848

This morning at 8 o'clock the boat Satona sailed, & I went to camp with a view of starting, but met with a gentleman who told me that his name was Owen of Titus County Texas. That he was a merchant & on his way to New Orleans- & was waiting for the Steam Boat Victoress. Which had been expected down for several days, that on that boat there were two gentlemen who owed $2000- & that if I would wait until the arrival of that boat & if when they came he could get his money- He would give me the $2000 for my three boys.

I told him that he had too many "ifs" & conditions in his proposition & that I could not consent to wait- - Just at this time Tillmon came for me & told me there was a gentleman in town who wanted to buy Jim. I hunted him up found his name to be John R Taylor of Upshur County Texas. Offered him Jim at $600. & he told me that he had but $500. which he would give & no more.

I could no better, & I took his offer & sold him Jim, which is the first & only negro I ever sold. But I have the consolation to known that I sold him to a good man & one who will treat Jim well-My hook which I set out last night, caught a cat that weighed 42 pounds.
Thanks again! I just hate that I did not develop this interest until my late 20's. Most of my family elders have passed on, and those that are left were kept in the dark as a child. My family was very secretive about a lot of things. The little bit of digging has helped me to understand why.

As one Taylor to another and all the other Taylors out there looking for our ancestors - take a look at this thread to understand the how specific the questions the posters were asking and answering with. Those are key details and descriptions about names, dates, etc., and also reflected on what was going on during those times in terms of documentation you might use to research your question about Taylor ancestors. This particular thread is probably not related to my Taylor family, but I learned a lot of information about the how to detail your research question, in order to receive richer, actionable answers.

I reviewed 1870 census of your family. Based on birth of Percilla (1866 Louisiana) and Nathan (1867 Texas) it appears they migrated to Texas "after" the Civil War? As a result, they were probably not connected to those Taylor(s) who arrived earlier as slaves?

Slavery ended 1865. If they arrived in Texas prior to that time, most assuredly, they accompanied slave owners. The 1860 Slave Schedule lists Lewis Taylor as the owner of seven people in Milam County. Research Lewis Taylor to include probate records. Too, most Texas towns, cities, and some counties compiled histories for the sesquicentennial (150 year) celebration (1836-1986). Families detailed their travels to and early struggles in Texas. Inquire about a history of Rockdale. 1870 census was the first to list newly freed former slaves. The 1867 Voter Registration Roll also listed former slaves.

Hello,

I am trying to determine where in Louisiana my ggg grandparents came from. Is this possible? George Taylor (b. 1809) and his wife Lucinda "Lucy" Jackson-Taylor (b. 1825) migrated to Rockdale (Milam County), Texas in the 1850's or 1860's. Their children were named Randolph, Cyrus, Nicholas (Nick), Hannah, Nathan, Percilla, Charlie, Marinda/Mirenda (my gg grandmother), Queen, & Victoria.

I started this search in 1999 and have been unsuccessful with uncovering this information. My grandmother does not know much about her family, so all of what I have discovered has been on here and through an 80 year old uncle.

Thanks for any possible information.

Lenea Banks

These are the same cemeteries. "Dunmore Cemetery" is its original name still used by its descendants. "Alford Cemetery" is currently used in funeral notices for burials therein. Burials listed may not overlap possibly to avoid duplicating burials already listed. Or submitters list buials not obtained from actual headstone inscriptions but from other sources like funeral programs. This practice preserves for future researchers the data for decedents without a gravesite marker. I speak from the experience of having read this cemetery in 2007.

Two cemeteries in Morehouse Parish are listed as Alford at Find A Grave.

One is listed as Dunmore Cemetery, aka Alford Cemetery. The map shows it on Handy Hill Road: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&GScid=6...;

The other one is named Alford Family Cemetery, has no map or address but does have a cemetery photo: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&GScid=2...;

There are Alfords buried at each one and there don't seem to be duplicates.

Can anyone shed light on whether these are really two different cemeteries?

Thanks,
Pam Thompson

Mildred Dales Hunter, New Orleans

Does anyone have any info on a Mildred Dales, born 1927 in Louisiana? Her mother was possibly a Clementine Watson, but I have no info on her either. Mildred's husband was Rev. Junior Hunter ( Junior was his actual name). She and Junior lived in New Orleans as adults, and they both died there, but I am unsure which part of Louisiana she was born in.
Any info on her or the Dales family would be so helpful. Thanks!
