My ancestor,
Jacques Dupas (nee Dupart) is the known progenitor of the Avoyelles
Parish,
Louisiana line of Duparts/Dupas'. Jacques older children, including my ancestress Julia, opted to use
Jacques, their father's only name when they reached maturity and married. Jacques and his children who came into maturity after slavery ended used Dupart and finally
Dupas as their last name. Gustave occurs several times among
Jacques descendants. I've wondered if the name held some importance to
Jacques and his descendants or if it was just a fairly common
Louisiana name of those times. To my knowledge there were no free Duparts, black or white, in the Avoylles area, so wonder at
Jacques decision to take on Dupart as his last name. Did he have some connection to the Duparts of the New
Orleans area via blood or bondage? Did the Duparts of your line have any connection to or family in the Avoyelles area? Were they connected to the Raballais family in any way? Thanks for any input. What is known of the Dupart woman who claimed she was of born in Africa circa 1767? (1850 or 1860 census)
Any knowledge of your Duparts and slaves?
