Dear Vernisha:

I didn't know if you had seen this, yet, because I didn't send it directly to you, but followed the "Cherry picking" thread. Here is the family you were looking for, Odessa's son, Leroy's WWII Draft Registration. Check it out on the LDS (Mormon) site:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/K84M-RCT
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1951-22863-15892-44...
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1942-22863-16004-65...

Hello, I am trying to track info on my husbands grandmother and her family. Her maiden name was Minnie Dennis, according to the 1920 Census from Johnson, St Francis, Arkansas her birth place is Mississippi. I'm wondering if there is a connection here? Her married name was Sampson. I have hit a road block prior to 1920 with her and her immediate family.
Thanks Colleen

Hello, my name is Chelsi and I have Lewis in my blood line. My great great grandparents were Isaac and Jane Lewis from Lower fishing creek/Edgecombe,NC. They had 8 children: Rufus, Amanda, Charles, Harry, Willis, James, Frank and Rachael. I'll post some links for the census with all the people in the house. It's a few different people living in the house with the last name but it doesn't say whether they were a niece or nephew. If the names ring a bell we should talk! cojc84@yahoo.com

Lewis 1880 census
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MC6P-8TZ

Lewis 1870 census
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MWZT-22N

Out of those 8 children Isaac and Jane had, I was only able to trace Uncle Rufus's household.
No such listing ever existed. If a person was not a slave, they were listed on the regular federal censuses. Just like all the black people living in the non-slave states. your Pierre is in the New Orleans death index as born 1810, died 1848. But race is not given in that index. And he's listed as father of 5 people born 1834-1843. Those people were listed as being black.

Walter or Walters

I am wondering why we cannot find anything on Creasie or Lucretia. It has been spelled many ways. "Creeie in 1870 Census Creecie, Creasie, Creecy etc." So we know that she and Lucious, or Lucis, or Lucius got married sometime between 1860 to 1870. And we know most of the children were born from 1868 ? to 1900? but we also know that Some were also in Oklahoma. And we believe that Lucretia was born in Oklahoma, (Chickasaw, Indian Nation, abt 1851.But On Lucis death Certificate it said he was widowed, and they mispelled his first name to something like "Lucuus" so we really don't know when she died. Can anyone find anything on her? Thanks, NTurney73

Dear Fellow Researchers:

In our enthusiasm to find our ancestors... our roots... we sometimes become overzealous and are too quick to post, as fact, what may be fiction. I came across this Board because I posted a correction regarding "Everet Scott," who is a great uncle (a brother of my grandfather). He is, correctly: Everett E. Scott, and his yob is 1879. The census taker made the spelling and calculation errors... something which happened more often than one would think. Do not assume the information on any records is correct. At times it is NOT. Consider, too, transcription errors made by employees of Ancestry, LDS, and every other Genealogy agency in the world. It can take years to find an ancestor who is lost in the sea of errors and/or misinformation. You have to be a detective and sniff out the truth BEFORE you publish.

Those who have been researching for decades are much more cautious. They would rather take their time assembling the puzzle, and experience the thrill of finding just the right piece, instead of trying to force a piece to fit where it does not belong. Some of the misinformation is never corrected, and will be repeated and adopted by others.

As for "race," remember that the census taker made VISUAL judgments or suppositions more often than ASKING residents their race, which is why you will see parents and children, in the same family and household, designated by different race symbols: W, B, C, I, Neg, or Mu. This is the case with my Scott family and most "mixed-race" families. If they were light-skinned, the census taker assumed/declared them mulatto or white. Were these people "passing?" NO! It was a matter of circumstance, not plan. Sort of "what will be, will be." You will also note the same people designated as different races in different census years. My family has been adjudged all the above. Really, what difference does it make? You know who you are! It matters not if they were slave or free; white, black, red, or yellow. All of those beautiful colored threads, when woven together, produce the most beautiful, vibrant quilt. We are what we are, and unless we are ashamed of ourselves, we should be overjoyed to find, and stitch together, all of those beautiful, sometimes elusive, threads into our own personal quilt... one by one.

Please be happy with your research, and take your time to verify everything before you share it with others. If you have posted any erroneous information, be willing to remove it. As for race, this is hardly a topic for argument. You cannot force ANYONE to open their mind or heart unless they choose to. Sometimes, it takes time for people to chew and digest information they've never before had to even taste. Work together with the knowledge and comfort that we are ONE human family, with ONE common ancestor.

The Apostle Paul addressed that very topic and made the following statement: (Acts 17:24-28) "The God that made the world and all the things in it, being, as this One is, Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in handmade temples, neither is he attended to by human hands as if he needed anything, because he himself gives to all [persons] life and breath and all things. And he made out of ONE [man](Adam)every nation of men, to dwell upon the entire surface of the earth, and he decreed the appointed times and the set limits of the dwelling of [men], for them to seek God, if they might grope for him and really find him, although, in fact, he is not far off from each one of us. For by him we have life and move and exist, even as certain ones of the poets among YOU have said, ‘For we are also his progeny (children).’"

As for our "FAMILY TREE," ponder over Job's heartfelt words as he uses the analogy of a tree with regard to the resurrection of the dead: (Job 14:7) "For there exists hope for even a tree. If it gets cut down, it will even sprout again, And its own twig will not cease to be."

Yes, our ancestors who have been "cut down," in death, will live again. We will, then, have the blessing and opportunity to see and speak with them, and get to know them... one by one.

In the First Century, the Apostle Paul confirmed Job's hope: (Acts 24:15) "and I have hope toward God, which hope these [men] themselves also entertain, that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous."

Then, our Family TREE will blossom in all its glory.

Happy hunting, and love to all.

I have found a bunch on Spencer or Spence WALTER, Lucious's son, but have struck out on Creasie, the mom. She was alive up to 1900 in Wynnewood, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory (now OK), and probably dead by 1907 when Lucius WALTER, age 63, showed up with a new bride of three years, Ellen, on the 1910 Garvin Co., OK federal census.

Spencer WALTERS
I have three birth dates for him:
15 Aug 1883 (source World War I draft register & 1920 census)
Sept 1887 (source 1900 census)
1889 (source age @ first marriage)

Based on the records, he was most likely born in Falls County, TX.

Spencer married first, on 23 Oct 1909, Pauls Valley, Wynnwood, Garvin Co., OK, Hage EASTMAN, born 1890 OK. His father, "Lucus" WALTER was a witness.
Spencer & Hage had at least two children:
Johnny WALTER, born 1911 OK
Ella V. WALTER, born 1913, OK

Hage either divorced Spence or died, but on 3 May 1919, Spencer married second wife in Garvin Co., OK, Mattie LEE, a widow, born 1895 TX, with four small children.
Spence & Mattie had at least two children together, both sons:
Robert Lee WALTER, born 1920 OK
Jessie Lee WALTER, born 1924, OK

Spencer died between 1924 (birth of last child) and 1930, when Mattie, widowed again, showed up alone, without Spence, on the 1930 census. This family lived at 123 Dakota Ave, Chickasaw township, Grady Co., OK.

No death record or burial was found online for Spencer. Maybe write to the OK vital records dept. for a death cert?

Hope this helps?
Laura

I am not sure much of anything. But we are trying to find Creasie. That is how her name is spelled on someone's death certificate. But her real name is Lucretia or Lucrecia. But in 1870 Polk Co Tx is where we found them first. They have a son Charles that was 9 months old. So we thought they could have marrried at least around 1867,or 68 but we cannot find a marriage cert. Then we found that they were in Garvin Co. oklahoma. We know that Mattie married in Oklahoma but died in Calif. and then we found Melvina married twice, but then died in Valley Mills,Tx. We know that they have a son name Sam Walters but not sure of his D.O.B. They also have a son named Spence, and I'm not sure of the others.I believe that her last name is Smith but my friend is not sure of that. We have found several close ones but then since we are not sure of much how can we really know? He is Black & so are all of his family. Sometimes they will say Mulatto but we know that is half black and half white. But if we can find a marriage certificate then at least we know that they were married and not just put together because of circumstances. That time 1850 to 1900 they had to plant crops and no one had much money. I think that they only had each other. They did not get a divorce. But we know that Lucius Born in Georgia. But I believe that I found Lucis or Lucius in Alabama or Louisiana or Mississippi. But Creasie was not with him. On Peggy Wells death certificate it named Lucus and Creasie as her parents. But we cannot find exactly where is was born.It said Polk Co Tx but how come is does not come up on any census? I am still searching but really feel like I have come close but just not sure. Also We have found I think it was on Mattie Lyglets death Certificate that Her mother's maiden name was Flenot. But when you put it in it came out as Flint. We cannot find a Lucrecia Flint who married a Walter or Walters. Let me know what you find and if you need any info let me know too. Thanks so much for helping. NTurney

They had approximately 14 children. I have found the following:
Joe C. Matherson, Mack Mattison, Walter Matherson, Jack Matherson, Samuel Matherson Jr., Solomon Matherson, Orlean Matherson, Virginia Matherson, Ben or Benjamin Matherson, McKinley Matherson, Aldonia Matherson. I have found their last names listed as Madison as well. Their death certificates have Elizabeth Scott and Samuel Matherson as their parents.

Courtesy lookup - not my family.

I found "Lucucs" Walters death certificate on Ancestry.com. He died 28 Jan 1920, near Reisel, Falls County, TX. The cert # is 1402, which you can view. The actual document image is at the Falls County, TX GenWeb (genealogy site) for free. Ancestry just has the index, not the image.

According to this death cert, Lucius was born about 1848, in the US. No other info about parents or birth place. The informant was Sam Walters, but no relationship is given. Could be any family member - son, nephew, even brother, who knows. Lucius was buried Marlin, TX, no cemetery listed.

I found an elderly Lucius Walters in the censuses, born the right timeframe, but not married to Creassie or Lucretia. Could he have married more than once? I cannot locate Peggy, Lucius, or Creassie all in the same household anywhere. I should find them at least in 1880, when Peggy was about six years old. Could you give me some other names to search, since you said she had 19 siblings?

Hope this helps,
Laura

I am looking for infomation on Lucius Walter or Walters. We have found it both ways. His wife name is Creasie but We believe that her first name is Lucretia or Lucrecia. They did have at least 19 children. My friend is trying to find information on her grandmother, Peggy Walters. She died in
Feb.1934. And is buried in Rockie Hill in Falls county. We have found some of the children but not all. Peggy is suppose to have been born in Polk County,Tx but there is no record. We do have a death Certificate but that is all. Her husband name was Henry Wells. If anyone has any information, just reply to this and I will contact you. Thanks, NTurney73

Long time coming, but Wow! Very interesting. I am hoping one day to be able to find information like this on my ggg grandmother Eliza Sears of Centertown. Born a slave 1832 at Linn Creek, Mo. Sold at the age of 2 to Judge W.C.Young. Apparently, he tried to buy her mother as well, but the owner said, no. Not sure why, can only guess that he had fathered her children. I would like to know who sold her. I can not find any records, but I keep on looking. If not for the kindness of people like you who post this information we would not have any clues at all. Thanks for your efforts and kind words.

Your last sentence speaks "volumes"! Education was recognized as deficient thus the emphasis on recording same on 1940 census. Don't know your birth but I was in high school in early 1960s Texas. Some West Texas Counties/Towns actually suspended school so that there was enough labor to harvest farm crops. As a result, there were adults attending "regular" high school. Imagine my dismay as a 15-year old 170-pound split-end playing football opposite someone 50 pounds heavier and five years older?
