Tasmin: It seems that my mother's mother Mariah McCoy was born in Jefferson, Georgia in Jackson County. My mother's father John William Oscar Harrison (used Oscar most of the time) may have been born in Hall County-not sure of city or town. Previously, I stated that Oscar's name was Silas and that was a mistake. I apologize for this error. By the time of the 1900 census Oscar was living in Jackson County. He and Mariah married in Jackson County March 12, 1888.

Luellis: I am revisitng all my message board requests and I just noticed your reply. I incorrectly listed my grandfather as Silas, but his name was actually John William Oscar Harrison, however, he was known as Oscar. I don't think his children knew his full name because they never mentioned it. Coinicidentally, I did have an uncle named Silas but he was named after an older first cousin of my mother. Also, none of the names you mention (Joe, Maron, Benjamin, etc.) sound familiar. My maternal grandparents had many children, but other than the name Silas, the other names are not familiar. I apologize for listing incorrect informationh.

I am revisiting all my message board inquiries and just noticed your reply. A correction: My grandfather's name was really John William Oscar Harrison, but he usually used just Oscar. It seems like Oscar may have been born in Hall County in Georgia but spent a number of years in the city or town of Jefferson in Jackson County, Georgia. I did have an uncle named Silas but not my grandfather. I am very sorry for listing incorrect information. Sharon Lewis

Hi,

Just a little info. Keep in mind that sometimes the census takers assumed that a person was mulatto when they had light skin. The people may have had white ancestors somewhere down the line but may have very well been black. I tried to do a little research on your query and I would say that most likely Benjamin and Elizabeth Duncan would be the most likely parents of Duncan for the reasons that you have stated in your query. I looked at Duncan's death certificate and it only gave a state of birth no county or city. The same for a child that Duncan and Irene had that died young. If I come up with any other advice or info, I will contact you. Good luck in your search.

Greetings,

I'm wondering if anyone can help with this.

My great grandparents lived in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California during the 1920s until the last one died in 1952. I cannot find a census record for their family, though I've found birth records for their children (including my grandmother). I have found Voter Registration lists too.

My great grandfather didn't have a social security card; his California Death Record stated he was born in Georgia in the late 1800s and died in California but had no ss number.

Was this common for Black folk during this time period? There is a rumor that my Great Grandfather was an immigrant, but unless he changed his name - I cannot currently find information about that either.

I hope someone can help with this, and look forward to your response.

Thanks for taking the time to read this -
h

The Mystery of Greatgrandpa Duncan Moore/ NC to Pamplico, SC

I am looking for any information on my great grandfather Duncan Moore. My grandmother was only 4 yrs. old when he died and her brothers and sister were all children, so they did not know much about their father and I am carrying a name of a man who's entire family I know NOTHING about. I was told that he may have gotten into trouble with the law,ran away from NC, met my great grandmother, Irene,in SC and settled down with her. I was told that he probably came from Rowland, NC (Robeson County, NC). He came to Pamplico, SC (which was called Orum back in the early 1900s). As of now, I am stuck, because I've come across two possible answers to my story. I found a record for a Duncan Moore, whose entire family is listed as "Mulatto" (with white or Native ancestry?) and he came from an area called Welchs Creek in Columbus County NC, which is not very far from Robeson County, where it is believed to have been the place where 'my' Duncan was from. Also, the date inwhich he was born (abt. 1873) seems just a little closer than the other Duncan (abt. 1869, though in other records the other Duncan IS listed as 1872, so that's not much of a difference). The number two Duncan I found, was from the Union, Pender, and Hanover County, NC area (close to Wilmington, which is further from Robeson County and Rowland)and he is listed as "black." People back then traveled a lot for work, and although it is further, than Duncan One, it's not impossible. I know that phenotypes and genes are funny, but looking at my grandmother and her siblings, it's more than likely, that Duncan was probably black and not mulatto, though the mulatto Duncan came from two mulatto parents and not a "pure" mulatto himself. Because of this I have not ruled him out, because my greatgrandma was a dark skinned woman. So, what do I do? I made two different trees using both Duncans as the home person. The only thing really different in both trees is where each Duncan first came from (or the first data I found) and the names of his parents. I've tried to search for other census records that could differentiate between the two, perhaps one that shows one Duncan in Welchs, NC in 1920 or vise versa, because according to the records, my Duncan was in SC, married to my greatgrand mother and living with my grandmother and her sister, but the 1920s Census only shows ONE Duncan. Which one, I don't know. I have searched for criminal records, for his possible time in prison, hoping that would help, but to no avail. If anyone has any advice or knows anything about a Duncan Moore who may have come from or near the area of a small town called, Rowland, NC in Robeson County in about 1870 and moved to Orum,Cains,Pamplico, SC in Marion/Florence County SC,in the early 1900s let me know. Duncan Moore married Irene Hyman and they had Gardenia Moore, Aggie Lee Moore, Ned Moore, and Harvey Moore together. My great grandmother had her eldest child, Grover Guiles, before she was married.

At the genealogy library they offer free classes during the months (assume) its that were way everywhere. Have you checkedout some of the Afro-American genealogy books atyour local library? Check out land records, state census, will probate records, neighbors of your relatives where you founded them, etc. I'm praying for clues also so I'll remember you.God bless your search, Hunterpg1

In walking through a pre-Revolutionary cemtetary in Princeton Massachusetts we came across several for a family named Gill. There were three graves with them, for "negro servants" of Moses Gill. The headstones were the typical black slate and beautifully engraved, identical to the family stones. One still legible read "Thomas, a Negro man servant of the Honorable Moses Gill." Thomas was 89 years old when he died.

These graves were in the Meeting House Hill cemetary, contained within the Princeton Center Historic District. I have pictures, although they didn't come out as well as I hoped that of Thomas is pretty clear. I can email the image if anyone is interested.

Wow, I had forgot that I had even put this message on this site, and back in 2002. Thanks for writing. I and a few of my family are very interested in Lynem history. It sounds like Your son in law's people being from Ky might be from the Selly Lynem line. My grandfather was from Ohio and moved to Ind. and His name is Joseph "Pop" Lynem and was either white or mixed. I think he was white, he looked like it and I always was mistaking him for a white man when seeing him walking down the street etc. We have a Lynem family Reunion every two years and the next one is in 2010 in Detroit MI. in the month of July. Tell your son in law that he will be amazed at how many Lynem's there are. I talk with Lynem's in Canada and Australia who are white. At our reunion there are white Lynem's as well as those who look indian. We have a very exciting family. I'm black and live in Calif. Most of our family lives back east, but there are Lynem's in new york, Ill. Fl. etc. I can tell you all more if he will give me his name and the names of his grandparents and any other names of greatgrands etc. if he has that information. I will check with my cousin david and give him Donald's name and see what he can come up with. There are a ton of Lynem's on facebook, and I have a page there also. You all can communicate with me at my personal email at michaellynem@email.com I will look forward to hearing from you both real soon.

Blessings,
Daniel Lynem

I have an ancestor, Rev. J. J. Miter, who was part of the emancipation movement in NY and Ohio prior to the Civil War. He is mentioned 3 places in an article in subject Journal. I think the entries are in Part 2 or Part 3 of the 4 published parts.
I found the references via Google Books. Unfortunately, they only show a snippit of information on each of the 3 places and I have been unable to locate either of the two parts on the web. Does anyone know of a library or collection that contains what I need to see?

Thank You
Brad Miter

Hi Kim -

My husband Steve and I and our two children have lived in the Washington, DC area since 1991. We spent two years in San Diego - but this is really home -- not that we would not jump at the chance to go back if we could :)

As it turns out, we will be in Pittsburgh this weekend (Friday - Sunday) for his family reunion. If you have a free moment - perhaps we could get together for a cup of tea. I would love to see you and hear how your family is doing.

Let me know if you have a few minutes...if not - I'll try to connect with you when we are in town next. We will be staying in Oakland.

Shelley

Hello. I'm on vacation at the moment and don't have access to my family research but if you would send me your mom's info -- name, birth date, death date (if applicable), brothers, sisters, grandmother's name, etc. I can look up her info when I get back home next week. If you don't want to post it here, please feel free to send it directly to my email at rmosley@rhondamosley.com or to rmosley82@sbcglobal.net. I'll receive it from either one.

I'm happy to help you with a look up or two if you need it as well. I'm sure if we all research our backgrounds as far as back as possible -- especially those of us with ancestral roots in North or South Carolina, we may very well either find that our ancestors lived on the same plantation and/or are related in some way.

Thanks for your inquiry. I am excited and hope to find a link or two.

..Rhonda (Scott) Mosley

Re: Alexander Flu
Dear sir / madam,

The Alexander Flu I am looking for must have lived at a later date. He was the brother of my grandmother, who was born in 1904. The likeness in names though cannot be a coincidence.

The Augustus Flu who was married to my great-grandmother could have been his son. They lived together in Cambridge, Massachusetts (USA), where they had 3 children: Alexander, 'Lena' and Antoinette (my grand-mother). I believe they have to be related so I would love to have any more information you might have on Alexander and Anna Magdalena.

Thank you so much for your reply. I hope to hear from you.
Regards, Nalinie Sriram
