Searching for my ancestor, Francois Lacouline, whose 1819 Canadian land petition says that he was born in France and that he moved to Upper Canada about 1797/8. I would estimate his birth to be about 1765 to 1775 but have no idea what part of France he is from. I'm hoping that someone can help me with this search! I don't know the name of his wife but his daughter, my 3xgreat-grandmother (born 1797, Upper Canada), was named Margaret (Marguerite).
Thankyou! Linda

Hello,
To cross the Atlantic, the first thing is to find the original surname of your ancestor.
No Lacouline in databases in France.

On several sites, it is mentioned SAULNIER dit Lacouline or DESAULNIERS dit Lacouline.

Maybe the name of your ancestor was SAULNIER or DESAULNIER

Thankyou Jerome. I've been wondering whether Francois could be a Saulnier dit Lacouline. Perhaps his father was sent back to France during the second wave of the expulsion of the Acadians from what is now the Canadian Maritime provinces.....then Francois was born in France and decided to move to Canada when the French were allowed back. My French language skills are not good enough to translate French records...do you see any reference to a Francois Saulnier dit Lacouline who was born in the right time period? I've seen Quebec records for a man with a similar name, but in a later time period. Did you see the Saulnier dit Lacouline family in databases for France? If so, could you tell me in what area they were residing?
Thanks again for all of your help!

Lacouline appear exclusively in Quebec and then, it is rare in Quebec, one might think that all Lacouline have the same origin.
But it is an assumption ...
The largest database of French is probably GeneaNet:

You can try also here
