My Great-Grandmother was Catharina Streifel, born in 1880 in the Odessa region of Russia. Her father was John (Johannes) Streifel and they came to North Dakota in 1885. She married my Great-Grandfather, Markus Imberi when she was about 18. She had a brother, John also.

My Great-great Grandfather Johannes Streifel was married to Elisabeth Feist. Johannes and Elisabeth's children were Catharina, Mathias, Mary Anna, Franz, Barbara (who married my Great-Grandfather's brother Siegfried Imberi - the Imberi brothers married Streifel sisters)

I have pictures of Catharina Streifel (Imberi) and Barbara Streifel (Imberi) I can send if you'd like.

I have not been able to trace the Streifel family any further than Johannes (born 1848), but do have more information on the Feist side.

Hi Elize, The very first Wollie to set foot in South Africa was SEBASTIAN WOHLFAHRT, from BOXBERG, in WURTTEMBURG, GERMANY who landed in Feb.1730 at Cape Town. He married REGINA BARBARA VAN BILLION on 15 Sept. 1748. They had 9 children, 5 boys; PHILLIPUS BERNHARDUS (1749), GEORG SEBASTIAAN (1751), PIETR JOHANNES (1753), GUILLIAM (1760), ERNST HENDRIK (1765).He later became the owner of the farm Versailles, Wellington, Western Cape. I am working on the family tree and need whatever info. you may have & care to share. I have lots about the history, in Afrikaans.
regards
Henri Wolfaardt
Durbanville
Cape Town
Eggert-Edwards missionaries to Africa

Hello. I am looking for my ancestors who were missionaries to South Africa and Namibia. J.F.S. Eggert, born 1820 in Germany, was a missionary from Rhenish Miss. Society to So. Africa and Namibia. He married Anne Edwards, b. 1832 in Stellenbosch. Anne was the daughter of another missionary, a Rev. Edwards from England. I am also looking for relatives who descend from Edwards who live in/near Pretoria. The surname is Tindall; some of them practiced law. Does the given name of Rory or Tancred mean anything? Please reply e-mail. Thank you.

Hi Mary Ann,
I am a great great granddaughter of JFS. Also researching family history, since this Eggert has the most interesting story, I am trying to get the info for a family reunion in 2013. My dad's second wife remembers the family handed down story of how they came to America, and has a picture of the ship they came over on. The family had to be smuggled out of Africa, because of Waring Tribes, in that Namibia Area. Benjamin was a baby or small child.
JFS and Anna had several children, I cant find all their names. My Aunt has a family bible, I have to get my hands on. I believe their 'youngest' child, was Benjamin Eggert, he is my great grandfather, father of my grandmother Alma Eggert Damon (and two or three other girls).
I also would like to find out more about the Anne Edwards side of the family, since she is my great great grandmother! She was also supposedly related to the DENDY Family in England, which was probably the Anne's Mothers Maiden Name? and said to be related to Queen Victoria, somehow. I was told that everyone is related to Queen Victoria, by a British man! lol
You may contact me at the above "From" name (watch spelling)@'yah who dot com'

Hello, my name is Leif Engellenner and I was born in small town in the north of Germany called Schleswig. I still live there. Your message "Engellenner Mystery" is very interesting. My Father is called Wolfgang Otto Engellenner and his uncle Karl Engellenner has emigrated to the USA - Sacramento, California after the second World War. We have visit him and her wife Lilly in 1995 and 2003/04. I have read here a statement from "Ashleye" and I think she talks about my granduncle Karl and Lilly.
In You statement you said something about your ancestry from Bredstedt in Schleswig-Holstein. This is not far away from my hometown Schleswig. So I think we are maybe from the same ancestry.
The reason why I am write to you is that I want to travel to Australia at the end of the year (2012) and perhaps I can meet you? We can talk about my and your whole family. Maybe we can find a part of the Engellenner puzzle...

It would be very nice if I get an information from you. Also you can reach me at Facebook.
Greetings from the north of Germany.

I have the same issue in my tree. I felt like I had found the mother's name when it showed relationship "mother" for someone named Rachel. Then other records, including the cemetery file, said her name was Fredericka. I then found a census record where mother/daughter lived next door to each other and the mother was known as Riga (maybe they told the enumerator "Ricka"--a shortened version of Fredericka). With additional work on the tree, I now have 3 other woman who have used Rachel and Fredericka at different times. All are German, all were in the 1800s.

I have the same issue. Fredericka was the birth/given name and the name on the boat records arriving at the US Port. Then the name Rachel is shown thru marriage, etc. My family came to the US in 1832. Two parents and three daughters. Everyones info matches (names, dates, etc.) from the German side to the US landing, then the youngest daughter all at once has the name of Rachel. Too many mathcing items for the other 4 family members not to be the same person/family.

Not sure how to respolve or explain this issue.

Both parents were born in Louisville, KY, where there was a large German community beginning in the early 19th century.

Both the Bloch and Monsch family were said to be from Alsace-Lorraine, and to have immigrated to the US because the men did not want to fight in Napoleon's army. These families were Catholic. Hope this helps.

William,

How do I get a copy of the ship passenger lists? Are there lists of those that died also? We suspect our gg grandfather came over in that timeframe and likely on the Ben Nevis (but unsure). His name Carl Ludwig Gustav Lehmann, son Paul Rudolf Lehmann and wife Adlelfine. My g grandfather (Johann Maximillion Lehmann) we suspect was born either just before departure or at sea during voyage. But Adelfine likely parished on voyage or at child birth. After getting citizenship, my gg grandfather Carl Ludwig Gustav Lehmann married Wilhemine and she raised both Paul and Max.

We've been unable to find a working link to the Ben Nevis passenger lists to verify.

Help reading Prussian or U.S. location in script

I am hoping to find someone who can help me decipher the location name in this photo of the confirmation register of a German American Lutheran church: First column on the left under "27 August 1879." Also in the far right column in the same row.

Another entry for a family member (sister) lists "Palesken" and "Palesckken" (which I believe to indicate Neu Paleschken) as the place of birth, so perhaps it is a nearby location? On the other hand, it could be a U.S. locality as 1879 is possibly the family's year of emigration.

Thanks to anyone who can help. This family has been a mystery for me up until now.

Hello :) My name is Ashley Engellenner and im 17 years old, almost 18. I live in the united states with my father William. What i know about my family history is that my great grandfather (we called him opa, but his name was Karl Engellenner) lived in germany and was forced to be in Hitlers youth or something of that nature. Meanwhile my great grandmother (i believe she was living in the Ukrain) married a man and had his child and her husband at the time got shipped off to war and they never saw each other again. Lilly got sent to a concentration camp (or a work camp) and they told her that her husband had died at war. While she was in the concentration camp her and Karl met, i heard he would sneak her bread to eat, it sounded very romantic :) Next thing i know they got married and had my grandfather Hans Peter Engellenner. They came to the united states on a boat and lived in California ever since. Thats all i really know tho, Im not sure if our ancesters are connected in any way but i thought id let you know since we have the same last name :)

Hi Tom,
Unbelievably it has now been 7 years since we received your email response to our "Engellenner Mystery". We are just wondering with the time that has passed, whether you may have any information of the origin of the "American Engellenners". We know the origin of every Engellenner in Australia, they originate from my great-great Grandfather Ernst Christian Engellenner. We have his naturalisation papers from 1897 which states that he arrived in Australia on the ship Grandee from the port of New York in 1877. We are trying to find out if there is a connection with the US Engellenners. Any help would be greatly appreciated I can be contacted by enail to engellenner_g@hotmail.com. Warmest Regards to you and your family. Feel free to contact me.

Regards,

Tom

First name 'Rakway'

Hello -

I'm researching the German side of my family and found my great, great grandmother in the 1885 Census - first name listed as 'Rakway'. With an unusual name like that I thought I would be able to find more matches...but no luck.

Here's my thought - could the census taker have heard hear name pronounced as 'Rakway' but she said something else?

Wondering if anyone has a thought as to a true name sounding like 'Rakway'?

Thanks!

Brad
