What does "-in" at ther end of a surname mean?

What does "-in" at ther end of a surname mean?

I've seen my ancestress in online trees with the surname "Garnier", but it is "Garnierin" on documents. I'm wondering if this is a German feminine ending. Can someone enlighten me?
