The Y chromosome haplogroups are determined by single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs).

The most common Y tests done have been for short tandem repeats (STRs) which are good for testing in regards to genealogically recent relationships, but are not so useful for the big picture of human evolution, for which SNPs are used.
