How can I send you those results and be a part of this project? I went to the link provided, but I don't have a kit number, username, or password.

Any particular family of "Johnston" in a particular county in Iowa you are interested in?

I am descended from two lines but I think the earliest were in the 1850s.

Since Iowa didn't become a state until just before the 1850 census there are probably some holes in the records from the 1840s.

So we are still looking for males willing to participate in the Y-Dna project. This would have to be males who carry the surname Stanberry/Stansbury/Stanbury and other variants. Currently there is no proof that meets genealogical standards that connects Ezekiel Stansbury of Greene County Tennessee to a mother or father. Those ancestry trees that connect him to Nehemiah of Morris Co. New Jersey are based on no more than a guess. A DNA surname study would provide evidence that might help to support a connection to either Detmar of Maryland or Josiah of Southampton. If you know of anyone willing to participate in the study, please contact me.

We are looking for male descendants of Josiah of Southampton to do Y-DNA testing and join the Stansbury DNA surname project. The hope is that we can compare Y-DNA results for descendants of Recompense and descendants of Ezekiel of Greene County, Tennessee as well as the Solomon and William Stanbrough from Greene County, Tenn., eventually settling in Ohio and Indiana. The results can be used, combined with traditional genealogy methodology, to determine the father of Ezekiel and the relationship between the Stanboroughs of New Jersey with the Stanboroughs/Stansurys of Tenn/Ga/Ohio/Ind with evidence that meets genealogical standards. Prime candidates are any males who are possibly direct male descendants.

If you go to Chapel Hill, Home of The University of North Carolina, you will find a number of Buildings or Halls with the Venable Name on same. These Venables are directly related to Colonel Charles Scott Venable, Aide D'Camp to General Robert E. Lee, or as the Same Professor Charles Scott Venable, Head of the Math Department at The University of Virginia, One time President of UVA (They rotated this position to various Department Heads) Prof. Venable also wrote a number of Math Books of which I possess a couple. His 1st love was U.N.C. He was born in his Longwood Estate in Prince Edward Co., VA, His Father was Nathaniel E. Venable b.12-05-1771 & his Grandfather was Brig. General Charles Scott, of Forkland, Halifax Co, VA and later Gov. of Kentucky 1808-1812, Abraham Venable I came from Chester Co. England to New Kent Co. VA in 1683.

Scott: There has been many updates in DNA research and certain markers in certain loci can tell if someone is related through a common ancestor, male or female, and the amount of DNA at that Loci can tell within a generation or two, how far distant the relationship is. I found a 2nd cousin through one of my ancestrl lines and we have communicated. I found a fifth cousin the same way through another of my ancestral lines. And, I have found MANY distant cousins who are from early (1600's-1700's) common ancestors, especially my Hawley and Stowell lines who migrated to New England in the early 1600's. That our families split in the 1700's to form different branches with different names tends to be verified by the "distant" cousin status. My grandfather, John WIlliam Oliver was the grandson of William F. Oliver (1790 NC-1854 GA) and Mary Venable (1800 NC-1860 GA) who were married in Savannah, Georgia in 1814 and are buried at Gravel Hill Cemetery in Pooler, Georgia. If I could get a venable to take the family finder DNA test who knows his Venable ancestry, I could determine which Venable line I come from, without knowing exactly who Mary's parents were. I know there were Stokes and Surry NC Venables but I can not find a Mary b.1800. I am willing to pay half of the cost.

Sandy

Sandy (I hope I am using your first name--I go by Scott):

I have no idea as to the meaning of the family finder DNA tests. I understand the purpose of same, but I did not know that the DNA data could be in different lines over the number of years and stretched out lineage would still apply. Our Ancestors had quite a lot of issues(Children) and trying to draw or form a tree was impossible for me to make a meaningful tree. I learned early on that I would try to make a tree that concerned direct family ties. I did spend hours at a library in Houston, Texas, that was specifically set up for this type of study. This was back in the early 1970's before the Bicentennial Celebration. My wife Barbara and our two Sons were able to be in Washington, DC to enjoy the fireworks and see the actual original Constitution and Bill of Rights on display. We went to the Archive Building about 3:30am to avoid long lines. I did have some conversations with some of the persons that assisted me in Virginia, Boston, Iowa, and North Carolina. After the Bicentennial I pretty well stopped trying to expand same. I gave a copy of my work to the Houston Library that I used and is still open the last I heard. The name escapes me, but I will find it out if you would like. I will also check as to the cost of reproducing the large chart that accompanies lines back to England. If I get the time, I might try Ancestry.com. Best of Luck to you Cousin(?). Scott

Thanks Linda for getting in touch with me. It has been what - about 50 years since we last spoke - when you came down to Venezuela when I was in high school. I never knew that we had an O'Brian in our tree. Where are you living now? Still in PR? A few years back I really wanted to get a copy of your father 's book - Battaan (sp?) y La Marcha de la Muerte but could not find a copy anywhere online. Here in New Mexico, there are several Battaan war vets that would have lived to have read it. I am a conga player in an all-female band as well as playing with a guy named Jose Salazar(guitarist). You can see us on youtube if you type in Jose Salazar playing Smooth or Jose Salazar playing Night in Granada, etc. tell me please what you need from me. Thanks!!!

I am currently working on a family tree for a close friend. His name is Stansbery I was wondering if there is a connection between the Stansbery family and the family you are researching. In my research I have discovered references to a Stansbury and a Stansborough family. Recompense Stanborough, 1554-1621, England

The upload is for YDNA tests. If you did that for Ancestry (or most of the other vendors) then you will have a haplogroup and YDNA markers and a reference #, usually starts with an A or a 9. We don't compare autosomal tests, but you are welcome to come post your lineage on the tree part of the site regardless.

Looking at the site and I'd like to upload my information from my Ancestry DNA test. But, I don't see an upload capability for the raw data. I do see an area to enter specific marker information. But, the field headings don't seem to make any sense or correlate to anything I've been given for results. How do I know what pieces of information to enter where? Also, when it asks for kit#, what do I use? Simply the order number from Ancestry? Thanks for any further information. I have DNA results to upload for myself and my father and would love to see what kind of results I could get.

Chris Smith
csmith2112@metrocast.net
Has anyone from this line done the Family Finder YDNA project test? It is for anyone, male and female, and finds cousins based on DNA from first cousin to fifth. If anyone from this line wants to take this test, I would be willing to go half as I am curious as to which Venable line I am descended from:

Mary Venable (1800 NC per census)-m-William F. Oliver om 1814 in Chatham County, Georgia.

James WIlliam Oliver (1822 Chatham Co, Ga) married Mary Dudley

(Children married Brantley and FOuntain in Chatham County, Ga)

John William Oliver (1853 FLA) married Inez Stowell

Edgar ray Oliver (1891 Ga) married Ella Frances Payton

Edgar Foster Oliver (1917 Ga) married Marie Miranda Johnson,

THENME

I have found cousins from families that intermarried with the Venables descended from Abraham and Davis. Could be my Mary is from the same line.

If you are interested, please email me and I will send a check to FamilytreeDNA for my half.
Yes, the project will happily include the surname Whiteley. Having your father DNA test is a good way to determine if you have connections to other Whiteleys not only with the Wheatley Project but throughout the large database of the testing company. If you like, I will be happy to place your Whiteley pedigree on the Wheatley DNA Project Patriarch Page. You don't even have to DNA test to do that.
Please contact me for more details.

I am a Whiteley, and I would like to have my Dad do a DNA test to prove our line connects with Joseph Whiteley Sr. of Russell Co. Virginia in the late 1700's. I am wondering if this is possible. Are there already DNA projects out there for that line? My line traces back to John B. Whiteley born in Russell Co. VA in 1802, and I believe he is the son of Joseph Whiteley Jr. & Franky Lea, and Joseph was the son of Joseph Whiteley Sr. who came with his father from Whitehaven, England as a boy. There is a record in Russell Co. VA showing Joseph Whiteley Jr.s children John & Polly 'orphans' being indentured out as apprentences at a young age. I believe this is my John Whiteley, as family tradition said his fathers name was Joseph Whiteley Jr.
Does your project include WHITELEYS? If I ask my Dad to do this DNA, I don't know what to do from there, so I am hoping there is already some DNA testing done for that large well known Whiteley family descendant from Joseph Whiteley Sr. & Sarah Stappelton.
Can you give me any advice???
Thanks Sue

Yes, I am referring to to this Samuel New. I would like to know who took the test because I want to make sure the results are applicable to my gggreat grandfather's family. My gggreat grandfather was Stephen Florence New of Washington Co., GA, son of John Florence New. John was the son of Daniel McGuire New (the elder) who came to Washington Co., GA from Abbeville, SC. I have not been able to locate anything proving Daniel from Abbeville's descent from anyone. However, I would like to verify whether it was a descendent of Daniel McGuire New who took the test. I don't have to know the individual's identity. I just want verification of the common ancestor.

If I remember correctly, his descendants settled around the Washington County, GA area.
*FREE* mtDNA Test Available for Umbilical Descendant of Lydia (Adams) Larrabee, wife of William-3 Larrabee (Stephen-2-1)

*FREE* mtDNA Test Available for Umbilical Descendant of Lydia (Adams) Larrabee, wife of William-3 Larrabee (Stephen-2-1)

The purpose of the “Dorcas (—) Andrews & Umbilical Descendants” Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) Project is to develop a genetic “mtDNA signature” for Dorcas (—) Andrews based on mtDNA test results from multiple umbilical descendants. By comparing mtDNA from known umbilical descendants of Dorcas with mtDNA from her probable or possible umbilical descendants, we can confirm or refute theoretical or ambiguous lines of descent that have been developed through conventional genealogical research using indirect evidence.

Unfortunately, the mtDNA of Project Participant #1, a *PROBABLE* umbilical descendant of Dorcas (—) Andrews, and the mtDNA of Project Participant #2, a *POSSIBLE* descendant of Dorcas (—) Andrews, do not match. Thus, we need at least one more Project Participant to confirm if either the probable or possible umbilical descendant of Dorcas (—) Andrews (or neither!) is a biological descendant of Dorcas.
I'd really like to see a copy of what you have as I don't understand a lot about the DNA.
My result was listed by Bob as A1 NAm William New c1757-1840 NC JR New Tx.
(jnew@austin.rr.com)

In my last correspondence with Bob New (Monday, March 28, 2011) he advised of his illness and that he was going to turn the DNA project over to a "cousin" Les New.
I have not seen that anything has been done.
Bob did pass a lot of documents via email to me. I had also kept all the DNA comparison reports that Bob sent out.
The last chart he sent me was 20 Aug 2010.
contact me (jnew@austin.rr.com) and I can share info with you.
