I have started a Whitcher Whittier DNA group on Ancestry.com. My brother was willing to have his DNA tested, so used the DNA service through Ancestry.com to provide me with DNA test results on a direct descendant of Thomas Whittier who came to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1638. The link is at http://dna.ancestry.com/findGroups.aspx?mode=search&quer... Perhaps there are other Whitcher, Whicher or Whittier family members who would like to join the group. Please do! Learn more about your extended family, and our common history.
Our ancestor came from the Wiltshire area in England; perhaps there are Whittier or Whitcher family members in that part of England who may also be part of this family.

How much does it cost to do that?

You can choose different levels, or numbers of markers, to have tested. My brother and I chose to use the Ancestry.com site to order through - http://dna.ancestry.com/buyLotGoals.aspx, and we chose to do the paternal lineage test (Y-Chromosome 33 or 46 are the choices - we chose the 46 marker test.) The cost for that is currently $149, which I believe is down some from what it was. The 33 marker test looks like it is $79. This site has good information on what it does, which was quite helpful. As they say, "Only males can take this test, but females can ask a father, brother, paternal uncle or nephew to take it for them."

Why only males?

My information comes from the FAQ on the Ancestry.com's DNA site. It says "The Paternal Lineage test analyzes specific segments of the Y-chromosome which is only found in males. And because the Y-chromosome is passed largely unchanged from father to son, DNA results from a male participant today can be used to represent the paternal lineage dozens of generations into the past." The "Maternal Lineage Test" traces your ancestry on your mother's side - so, your mother, to her mother, and so on. So if tracing the Whittier line, the DNA has to come from a male in the line - that's why I couldn't do it, but my brother could.

Does this help a bit? The FAQ has lots of helpful information.

Hi I descend from John Whicher born c1760 of Shipton Bellinger(on the wiltshire/hampshire border, He married Martha Green on 30th May 1785. They had 8 children, the eldest of the sons Thomas born c1790 Shipton Bellinger. He married a Mary surname unknown and they had 9 children. Their 3rd daughter Maria born 1817 in Thruxton( again on the border) was my grt.grt.grandmother. Do you know if we connect or indeed who the parents were of my grtx4 grandfather John Whicher?

Many thanks for your time
Angela Smith

Hi Angela, I am also descended from Thomas Whicher via his son George (born 1820 in Thruxton and brother of Maria. From what I can establish regarding John Whicher's parents they were most likely John Whitcher (b. 14th Jan 1723) and Sarah Wood, from West Tytherley and East Tytherly respectively. John's father may have been yet another John (b. 1694) from Barton Stacey. I hope this helps you somewhat

Rick

Sorry for not replying sooner, but I just did not see your message until today. I would love to find a connection between your group and mine. The original person here in the United States was a Thomas Whittier. The spelling of his family name in England had some variations - Whytear, Whitteer, etc. He was from Landford, Wiltshire, and goes back to a Henry Whytear in Landford. I think I have seen that there are a number of Whicher and Whitcher families in the Hampshire and Wiltshire areas, but have not yet been able to find any connection. Apparently Thomas was the only member of his family to come to the Massachusetts Bay Colony (only one with that name, that is - he came with a Rolfe who was apparently a relative.) Since the first Henry (b. abt. 1525) had 6 children, of whom 4 were males, and two of them lived for a number of years - John, b. abt 1571, died in 1593, and William, b. abt. 1575, and died in 1646 - it seems most probable that there were descendants. But who? I have a Whittier DNA group on Ancestry.com's DNA site, and have a hope that someone with the Whittier/Whitcher name in England will join!
