Mary Brewster, could mtDNA prove Wentworth or Wyrall or ?

Surnames: Brewstwe, Wentworth, Wyrall
Mary "Wentworth" or "Wyrall" or something else altogether, married to elder William Brewster. ould a mtDNA test (mother to daughter unchanged) establish who she really was? Of course it would depend on an unbroken female descendence from her presumed mother or grandmother and any female siblings proven to exist in whichever line she is from.

Wyrall? That one I never heard yet connected to Mary wife of Wm. Brewster. I'm new to the whole DNA thing, but clearing up the mystery behind Mary sure would be nice! I'm pretty sure however, that the mt-DNA test alone is not going to give us a correct surname placement, but it might however give clues? I too am a descendant of the elder Wm. Brewster via daughter Patience m. Thomas Prence.

Most DNA testing sold for genealogy purposes is for paternal lineage only. e.g.father to son to grandson, etc. and can confirm or deny which ancient mariner is your progenitor. That's where surnames generally come into play. The mtDNA (mitochondrial) test is maternal only, as there is certain DNA that passes unchanged from mother to daughter.

If you had DNA directly from Mary (Brewster) and a DNA sample from any of her suspected fathers - or possibly sons of sons of sons of same and those might be compared.

What mtDNA can do is from a living person go back though their maternal only line and then compare that sample of the unchanged markers with another person's maternal line to find an intersection, or a common mother.

If there exists an unbroken female descedency from Patience, your ancestor, AND an unbroken female line from Mary's suspected mother (or grandmother) then I think the two lines could be compared - but it all depends on females of each generation producing female progeny that also produces daughters that also have daughters - and so on.

At least I think so.

Ok, I think I understand what you are saying. I would need an unbroken female born each generation from Patience on down to me??
Ok so in my case then mt-DNA wouldn't work for me then, because Mercy Prence married John Freeman and I descend from their SON William Freeman who married Lydia Sparrow. It continues down with their son William Freeman m. Mercy Pepper >William Freeman m. Hannah Atwood> Col. William Freeman m. Mary Elizabeth Cobb> Robert Freeman m. Catherine Fraser> Mary Freeman m. James McClearn 4 Dec. 1821 Queens County, Nova Scotia.

My great-grandmother was Carrie A. McClearn born 1902 Iowa.

This is where knowing your cousins comes in handy. If your William Freeman had a sister who had a daughter who had a daughter… That would be a lot of genealogy to do. You'd have to fill in about six generations of females.
