Can anyone help me with how to use Genome Mate with Ancestry Data? It looks a great tool, but I seem to be having trouble getting it to work for me. I followed the steps to get the Chrome Plug In, scanned my DNA data and downloaded the matches. I imported everything into GM, but there's nothing populating in the table on the main screen. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks, Donna

Ancestry.com data will not have any segment information so it will not show up in the tables on the main screen.
You should be able, however, to retrieve names of your ancestry matches when you do a general search in genomemate for a relative or surname.. If you can figure out that someone is on your gedmatch, 23&me or FTDNA data that you have separately uploaded (with chrome segment data), then you can find a way back to their tree on ancestry with this data. It is a slow process, but if you guess right on user name or portions, it can be very helpful to be able to attach your ancestry match names to their other data (if they have tested at the other two companies or uploaded to gedmatch).

Thank you. That makes perfect sense. And you were absolutely right about the user names. I was able to take those that I have hints for and match up to 2 gedmatches so far. I'll start widening my scope now that I've gone through my list of known matches on Ancestry.
Thanks again for your help.

Another absolutely fabulous trick I have been doing with my segment-less ancestry.com names that I have loaded into genome mate via the chrome dna extension is to use it to retrieve all my ancestry.com matches that I have put a note on with a particular surname.
For example, I have been intensely researching the name Galloway across all three dna companies plus gedmatch.com and put notes on all matches that have this name. I can now search on genome mate by the name Galloway see all my ancestry.com dna matches and their notes re galloway. I could use the "find" tool on each excel spreadsheet for each company, but this is so much easier. I could also use the find surnames function on my ancestry.com match page but then you have to hover over each note to see what you wrote..on genome mate the notes themselves are all displayed in a column.
Genome mate is real great (and I have sent them a donation since it is such a timesaver). Like everything, it takes some time playing with it, but once you do, it makes dna organizing much more fun as well as easier!
