yDNA & mtDNA

I just want to say that I don't understand how you can determine very much from the DNA offered on Ancestry. It is a test that goes across both female and male lines similar to the Family Finder test on FTDNA. It might be helpful for recent relatives in the last couple of decades, but if you want to go back further, you might need a test that gives you the DNA of the father's father's father's father's father. That is yDNA direct male only. If you want the Mother's mother's mother's mother, you will need a direct female descendant. That is mtDNA. I have never had any luck with Ancestry's DNA test. Just FYI

The autosomal is the only one that can give clues in lines that are not a strict male only descent or a strict female only descent.

I have found enough 4th and 5th cousins that I was able to get a direction to explore on some ggg-grandparents.

While I agree, I don't think most know the difference or have a direct line. It was the autosomal from Family Tree DNA that helped me find the 5th grandfather, but it took me 2 years of working almost every day. I found 4th cousins easily with just my tree. I just think the Ancestry DNA can be misleading if people don't know about DNA and don't do their homework.
