2nd cousin prediction

2nd cousin prediction

Hello, this is my first post on here. I took the Ancestry DNA test and my closest match is labeled 2nd cousin (1st-2nd cousin range). Does anyone else have someone predicted as this, and what is your actual relationship? I think we are at least once removed due to age difference, but wondering if it could be as close as 1st cousin once removed ? Thanks in advance!

Sometimes it is an accurate prediction and sometimes it is not. The system simply looks at the amount of DNA in common and then calculates it based on that. It does not attempt to determine the "removed" level. You must figure that for yourself with the paper tree. 1st to second could include a 1st once removed or even a 2nd once removed.

Also keep in mind that DNA recombination is random. You and the other person may get different amounts at different locations than each other so this can throw the calculation off.

My aunt shows as a 2nd to 3rd cousin to a particular relative. This is very good as she is a 2nd cousin once removed. This same person is my 3rd cousin but we didn't get that amount of shared DNA from our common ancestor and this same person shows as a 5th to 8th cousin in the DNA calculation for me despite being a documented 3rd cousin.

I have five 1st - 2nd Cousin Extremely High matches. Unless you come from an endogamous group like I do, your match may actually be close. But as mentioned, a removed or two may apply to that. You won't know until you compare trees.

Thanks guys , the only reason I. Cant tell our relation is because it appears it is on my unknown fathers side . I can tell I am related on his moms branch who were Scandinavian and Irish immigrants in the early to mid 1900's. So I was hoping someone had a known first cousin once removed or something similar and could tell me how they are predicted . Mine is under "2nd cousin " but with a range of 1st -2nd .

My 1st cousin once removed came back as a 2nd cousin, 1st-2nd cousin range. I had another 1st cousin test, we share the same 1C1R it's the same. My 1st cousin is listed under 1st cousin, 1st-2nd cousin range. And of course our 1C1R gets both of us listed as 2nd cousin, 1st-2nd cousin range.

And if it wasn't for this post of yours, I wouldn't have really, really, really look at my top match's tree over & over again. I have been doing that over a week, but when I replied to your post & reread what you wrote and compared my own 1st cousin once removed, that's when I thought maybe I should look at a specific tree. My mother was adopted and I think i just found the branch my mother belongs to since I found a pic of a relative that looks like my mother and sister. So, thank you for this post!

You're welcome, glad i could also somehow help:) I have been working with this match for about 3-4 months when he first popped up here. I uploaded the chrome extension and figured out our common matches, it then appeared to me we might be related on his moms side. Our closest common match is predicted as 3rd to him , but 4th to me. He didnt have a tree to compare with my 2nd cousin match, he also never replied to my messages in hopes of figuring out what branch the two shared, because that is how i'd find out what branch is also my own. Anyway ,i found his brother on fb who upon my request created a tree, in doing so, my prediction and fake tree i created for him was confirmed. So now i narrowed it down to two possible families, one of which was about 40 mins where my mom lived when around the time i was conceived. Now the hard part is gonna be getting in touch with one of the direct family members and hope they will be willing to help a complete stranger who is actually possibly close family.

I totally understand. in my case, my mother was adopted, but I didn't know it till last August. I had already tested with the other two companies and here I tested Jan 2014 so when I had my top match, I didn't think anything since I assumed it was like the other companies. Then my mom finally tested in March, same person as her top match but again, I made that same assumption. Until recently.

Hopefully we get this all taken care of, both for you and in my situation. I'm in that position like your match, have no tree, at least not for my mother's side. Or I had a tree, thought that her adoptive parents may have been distantly related and got relatives to test already, which is when she revealed to me that she knew she was already adopted. :/

Yes being adopted is certainly complicated, and makes this more difficult. I tested at 3 companies as well, after finding out i was adopted December 2013. This 2nd cousin(1st-2nd range) is my closest anywhere. I found my mom last March, but she is deceased since 1989. My obc says "unknown" for father. Has your mom attempted getting her obc or non id info, guess it depends what state. Also, have you tried messaging with this close match, or searching for them online. I am in process of searching of contact info for my potential bio dad family. It is proving to be more difficult than i thought! Good luck to us both :)
