It is very easy to construct a tree with only direct ancestors (i.e., a pedigree) from the usual top-down genealogies in FTM and presumably other programs. Simply export your direct ancestors from each family and merge the files. This makes it easy for another person to find common ancestors.

It also solves one of the major problems that people have about posting public trees, namely the copyalogists.
