Lazarus

One of the new tools on Gedmatch Tier 1 is Lazarus, which creates an artificial genome for an ancestor based on combining results from that ancestor's relatives. I created a Lazarus file for my deceased grandfather and the results were very illuminating. They showed how recombination resulted in my matching some relatives while my first cousin did not.

The most interesting comparison was with my closest YDNA match, whose family lived about 10 miles from mine in rural County Cork. Our YDNA results indicate a 50% chance of a common ancestor within 7.5 generations. I do not have an autosomal match with him but my reconstructed grandfather does, with an estimate of 5.1 generations in distance. That's very compatible with the YDNA result and provides some additional clues about when our common ancestor might have lived.

If you have multiple family members who have tested Lazarus is worth a try.

Thanks, Jim! Very interesting! I'm glad that you found some new clues.

What relatives did you use to create your Lazurus grandfather?

I created a Lazurus file for my Dad using my two siblings, my Mom, and four of my Dad's sibs. Interestingly it shows Lazurus Dad as more closely related to his siblings than to his children ??? Adding cousins only muddied the waters further. In any event, I'm looking forward to Many to One matches for Lazurus Dad.

In the meantime, I may try to do a Lazurus Grandfather for my Dad's side. I have four of his children, a great niece, great nephew, and two descendants of his father's sister.

No chance that I can do the same for my McCann grandfather. So far I have my Mom and one distant cousin for him! Any chance that my Mom is related to your Lazurus grandfather?

Take care.

Hi, Blanche--unfortunately no match between your mom and my Lazarus grandfather.

I used myself and my paternal first cousin and 12 other cousins from our parish in County Cork. Turned out to be a total of 1200 cM, not enough for 1-many matching but pretty interesting for 1-1.

I am having trouble creating the Lazarus file for my father. I put in my mother's, my brother's and my own kit numbers but am coming up with "No Kit Created." What could I be doing wrong?

I figured out that I need a number in Group 2. If I put my brother's number there, will that give me a legitimate result? I don't have any other relatives of my father tested.

Try putting in some kit numbers fro confirmed or probably DNA relatives from his side. I was fortunate that my grandfather's parents were both from the same small parish in Ireland so any matches I got from that area were on his side.

My Lazurus results for my Dad are very strange. I have great input data for my Dad...his spouse...four siblings and three children...plus a grandson of another child...two children of his first cousin and two descendants of his great aunt. The results show a very short list with his close relatives at the top plus a handful of other known relatives. I then get a list of several previously unknown people who do not match any of Dad's siblings or his children. Phased Dad results for all of his three children make much more sense. Will delete Lazurus Dad and try again using just his sibs, kids and children of his 1st cousin.

I created a kit for my father. First pass I only included me and my aunt (his sister) but the results were too broad. I'm rerunning the utility with 3 additional cousins based on my matches here and at GEDmatch as well as including my mother's kit in the spouse box so as to eliminate her contribution. In the first pass she showed up as a pretty close relative to him which I know to be false.

I've sent email to John & Curtis with the suggestion that they incorporate a way to update/amend/refine existing Lazarus generated kits so as we add cousins we don't generate a new kit number. That way anyone we've shared the number with won't have to be updated. We'll see what happens.

Created another Lazarus kit omitting my Mom as spouse and using just Dad's sibs and kids plus children of his first cousin. Results make much more sense. Suspect that Mom's contribution muddied the waters. She and Dad are 4th cousins on two lines even though they are not ancestry or GEDmatch matches. Mom does match one of his sibs on ancestry and Mom's cousins match other sibs. My parents also share several populations...N and S Irish, Alsace-Lorraine, Hesse, colonial MD and PA in same communities. Anyone with a similar situation may want to try Lazurus with and without a spouse.

Just realized that I said that Mom and Dad were not ancestry or GEDmatch matches. Since Dad is deceased, this was a given! Meant to say that Mom and phased Dad are not GEDmatch matches. I clearly need lunch.
