Could Alcohol like Wine that was consume 45 min prior to the test influence the results?
Hi, I'm a beginner in genealogy, here's my question: I received my results, and was very happy to have 30% from the Italy/Greece region. But I remember i also drank a glass of Italian wine 45 min before i took the test. I know they said 30 min without eating and drinking were enough, but I was wondering if somehow, the fact that I drank a product from that region could have interfered with my results. It may look silly, but I'm not a specialist and I would really like to be sure I have that percentage from Italy and Greece (it would make sense since most of my ancestors are from France and few from Italy, the Romans could have left their genes in France i guess). Thank you very much for your time! Xavier Morency Montréal, Canada

No it would not affect the results.

Was it a Barbera or Chianti wine? LOL, in all seriousness, it shouldn't affect the results. Since you're primarily of French extraction, Italy/Greece DNA results are not at all surprising, especially in folks from southern France. Marseille was actually founded as an ancient Greek colony, and the entire region of SE France (Provence) was heavily Romanized and populated with Roman colonists from the Italian peninsula (and also would maintain ties to Italy in more recent historical times).
I tend to see the French as a transition nation between Northern and Southern Europeans. Mediterranean, Celtic/Gallic, and Germanic peoples/genes all equally blended together there. If I had to compare the French to one group of people the most, it would probably be Northern Italians, who have pretty much that same mix as well.

Ahahah, if my memory is good, I think it was a Chianti! I agree with you, I was just surprised and enthousiast that the percentage was so high, I think my DNA represent very well the colonization of France through history, I'm from Québec and 99% of my known ancestors are from XVIIth century France, I have 39% British that could be explained by the Normans (most of french canadians ancestors were from Aquitaine, Normandy and Northwest France, also Paris). I have 30% Italy/Greece that probably come from the Roman colonization after Caesar's conquest of the Gaul, and from Greeks from Marseille and Nice, like you said. I have 13% from Ireland, i read in the results that it could be mixed up with Basque people from Nothern Spain, that would make a lot of sense since I have no Irish relatives known. It was said Irish kind of represent the Celts, so that may also be from the Gallics the Romans defeated. I have 7% Western Europe, maybe from the Franks. I have 5% Scandinavian, that could also be from the Normans. Well thank you very much for your time and help! I hope you were satisfied with the results of your test like I am for mine!

Interesting, yes I tend to think "Scandinavian" is basically a shorthand for not only Vikings/Normans but also perhaps for Germanic peoples in general, who originated in southern Scandinavia/northern Germany before migrating elsewhere, which would've included tribes like the Franks, Angles, Saxons, Lombards, Goths, and others. The Normans would've been a combination of Scandinavian Vikings and the local northern French population, itself a Romanized blend of Gauls, Romans, and Franks.
"Europe West" is quite possibly a shorthand for the ancient Celtic-speaking Gauls of Western/Central Europe. The Celtic-speaking people of Britain and Ireland (before Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, Normans, and others conquered/settled in Britain), would've probably shared some genetic ties to the Celts/Gauls of the continent, but it seems they were also largely descended from people who were there beforehand and who adopted Celtic languages/identities from smaller groups of migrants from the continent. Those people would've shared the genetic affinities to the Basques of northern Spain/southern France, which are still evident in a good number of Brits/Irish. Hence, "Great Britain" and "Ireland" DNA (which before were lumped together as "British Isles") is probably indicative of those people in Britain/Ireland who have ancestry from the Celtic-speaking, and also pre-Celtic, inhabitants of the British Isles who were then Celticized.
In any event, all of Europe is somewhat mixed together to an extent on account of its rather small compact size and the fact that people from different parts of Europe were always migrating around for millennia before they began to settle down and adopt national/cultural identities.
