It takes a lot of looking and sorting to deal with the matches. I can give you the following advice on the hints: not all will show up on the top level as a leaf by the user name. Only half of my shared ancestry hints show a leaf icon. The rest I discovered because I went and reviewed the actual match. Once I opened up the match it would generate the shared ancestor hint. Even then, they never get the leaf icon. So I mark them as "favorites" since there is no easy way to sort the list for them.

So make sure to review every match. And understand that as other people add data to their trees (and you to yours) you will get hints (or have them "taken" away -- I gave info to correct someones tree and that took away that connection on the tree so their leaf icon went away.)
