Should I test myself or my father to discover his 'birth family'?

Should I test myself or my father to discover his 'birth family'?

I have purchased an ancestry DNA kit but would appreciate advice on whether to do it myself or get my father to do it. My father was adopted at birth and although we now know who his mother was we have no idea as to who his father was. I am hoping that, assuming his birth father had other children, one day I may find some matches that I can then track back up their family trees.

My question is - will it make any difference if I do it instead of my father? Will it lessen my chances of finding a match to his birth family?

Thank you

Hello! My dad was also adopted at birth but passed away in 2006 before they started doing DNA testing on ancestry. I took the test a couple years ago in hopes of finding his birth family. I would suggest having your dad take the test. That way, you're only dealing with your dad's matches. If you take the test you'll have to weed out the matches from your mom's side of the family. Hope this helps!

Hi Tracey, Im in the same situation. My mother was adopted at birth and she did get to meet her real mother. The only problem is no one knows who her father could be. My mom had passed away so its up to me now. Goodluck to you!
