Antosomal DNA - How to administer another relative's test

My siblings are now going to do the Ancestry DNA test. I already have a Tree with my test results linked and am receiving matches. Can anyone advise me the best way to link my siblings to the same online tree. What is the easiest way to administer another's test and matches? Do I need to send in their test, or can they designate me at administer?

Did you buy their DNA tests through your account? If so, you are the administrator and you can directly link their DNA results to your family tree. If they have their own accounts they can activate their test through their account and then give you access to their DNA results and you can share your family tree with them as either guests or as participants (not sure if that term is correct) who can make changes to your tree. OR, they could start their own tree under their own DNA test. Ancestry has a lot of flexibility in that regard.

One is paying for himself, but has not sent it in yet. I may have the opportunity to have it diverted to me to send in. Both siblings are in my tree and are participants.

All you really need is the activation code that comes as part of the package. If you activate the test, you will be the admin no matter who actually does the mailing.

I have a question.

So if I have ordered tests, when they come in, if I activate the code and pin it to my tree, can the person ALSO later pin it to their own tree, separately? With the same activation code?

Or do you basically get one shot at it?

I don't want them to merely see the results, they want the results on their tree and I also want the results on mine, for the same kit. Thanks.

I'm in the same boat (my mother has activated her kit on her own account) so would be very interested to see if I can link it to mine.

No you can only link to one tree. The best you can do is one person link it and then invite others to the test but you can only link it to one.

DNA test results can be "shared" which means that she can let you be a guest on her results or even an editor. However, you both can't "own" the account. Prior to 2014, you could. I bought a DNA test for a second cousin and activated the results on my account. I was able to transfer my entire results to her account while keeping it on mine as well. They seem to have done away with that option.

Another thing that I don't think is really a good idea. That is that, as you noted, the person who activates the test "owns" it no matter who paid for the test. I recently bought and sent a test to a second cousin thinking I would activate it and share it with her. The lady is elderly and relies on someone to look after her. That person opened an Ancestry account. Had the test done and now is blocking me from any access to it.

Theoretically, under Ancestry's system someone could steal the test out of your mail, activate and process it and you, the person who purchased the test, would be SOL. Ancestry needs to change the system so that the person who bought the test always has at least sharing access to the test results. Better yet, the person who bought the test and the person who took the test should be co-owners of the results.

A simple solution is to have the test kit shipped to yourself and activate it before sending it on to the recipient. Also remove the portion of the instructions that describe how to activate and keep it for your own records. Be SURE to write down the kit activation number in your records.
