atDNA, should have matched?

I have tested myself, my father and a sister. We ALL match a second cousin/second cousin 1x removed on a given line. On another line, none of us match another second cousin! Y-DNa suggest the male of that common ancestor couple would not match. But, the female common ancestor should have. We have a 5th cousin and a couple of 8th cousin matches with this female ancestor's line. He says he has a distant cousin match on the line in question. I thought 3rd or earlier matches almost always matched with atDNA, even given the randomness of atDNA. Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.
