Any bored programmers out there looking to earn the love of the genetic genealogy community? :)
I've been focused on building collateral lines forward for DNA matching purposes over the past two years, to the point where my tree size has doubled to clickologist size. (Gotta love the Ancestry app + census info + vital records + FindaGrave pics/obits. In other words, I'm not mindlessly copying people's trees.)
The effort has paid off several times already. Plus, there's the bonus of people here sometimes being more receptive to GEDmatch begging if I start my request by adding a generation or two to their tree. ;) (I have to keep reminding myself that people don't always have time or the inclination to pursue every line.)
I try to regularly check DNA matches for a few of the newly discovered cousin surnames, but it's all really inefficient. Between three companies, multiple tests at each, regularly having so many new cousin names to check, and the fact that I add most collaterals when on an iPad and away from my laptop (where the real tools are, meaning that I can't check names as I add them, which would be tedious anyway), I long for a more elegant solution.
What I'd like is a bit of software that lets me do the following:
- load my GEDCOM and designate test-takers in it
- load all of the test-takers' match lists from Ancestry (via Snavely), FTDNA, and 23andMe
- add surnames to matches if not already there (if it could just read my Genome Mate backup, all the better)
Then, in the app, I would pick a person from the GEDCOM (not necessarily an ancestor). The app would create a list of all unique surnames for descendants of that person (toggle option: spouse surnames even if no kids). Then it would check the relevant match lists for those surnames and generate a report.
(If it could search location data connected to names, all the better, but I think it would be a mess to program - just look at the chaos that is currently the Locations tab on our Ancestry matches.)
The app could also have these features:
- reloading of GEDCOM and relinking to test-takers without much fuss
- option to locate newest surnames since GEDCOM reload and search only for those
- option to locate newest matches since match list reload and search only those
- time stamp on surnames to show when last checked and for whom
- option to exclude specific names (Smith, Jones, etc.) from report
- option to exclude specific matches from report
- option to add notes
- manual search capability
- saved searches
- search reminders
But, if that's not possible, I just want a program that can give me a surname-only no-repeats list of descendants for a given ancestor and a way to track which of those names I've searched matches for, which company I searched at, and when.
Alas, my own programming skills are puny and buried at the bottom of a dust bunny warren. Any takers? :)
