It’s been a struggle to clearly frame this question. I hope it’s clear enough.
I can trace my lineage back five generations to my paternal 3rd great grandfather; the trail stops there.
I have a few autosomal DNA matches with individuals whose trees connect to a documented family with the same surname and general location as my 3 ggf, but the family is at least two generations further back in time. Documentation of this family does not extend forward enough to identify a connection with my 3 ggf.
My question is:
How many autosomal DNA hits with descendants of this ancestral family must I have before I can say with a certain degree of confidence that my 3ggf is related to this family?
Thanks, Mike
