I found a new suspected cousin, the old fashioned way, digging through papers and records and finding a relatively rare uncommon last name. Everything matched up in terms of names, and they filled me in on other parts of this branch which I did not know about - basically it seemed my new cousin's GM was a 1/2 sister of my G GM, and my cousin's G GF is my GG GF.
My cousin took the ancestry test, and it came back and put us a 5th-8th cousins, low confidence. (We believe we are second cousins 1x removed, though not full due to the marriages of my GG GF)
gedmatch opened up today again for uploads, and has us at 5.5 MRCA.
Largest segment = 8.2 cM
Total of segments > 3 cM = 90.1 cM
Estimated number of generations to MRCA = 5.5
The working theory is that our common ancestor is 3 generations for my cousin and 4 generations to me. Due the the "luck of the draw" of the DNA passing down and having a different G (GG) GM it seems possible. Or I am being too hopeful?
I am going to have my brother test also to see if he comes up any higher, he looks a lot more like that side of the family than I do :)
Thanks for any input
