So, after waiting almost 2 months to get my 23andMe results back, I can report the following:
Ancestry DNA:
Number of Matches: 3187
Number Private: 513 (16.1%)
GEDmatch Matches: 108
Percent of my An-DNA
with a Kit on GEDmatch 3.4%
23andMe:
Number of Matches: 994
Number Private: 720 (72.4%)
GEDmatch Matches: 795
Percent of my Me-DNA
with a Kit on GEDmatch 80%
Of course it is my understanding that 23andMe will only show a user a maximum of 1000 matches. But the real kicker is the percentage of my matches that have private profiles, 72% of my matches. Communication with these anonymous members is very convoluted. First you must send them an email (thru 23andMe, like on Ancestry) just to request that they allow you to contact them. If they say yes, you then get their email back stating that they will accept future communications. You then have to make a second request to share genomes. At this point however you have no clue about common surnames because their profile is still private and will not show in your relative finder list.
Most 23andMe users have no family tree uploaded.
On the other hand, 80% of my matches have uploaded to GEDmatch so this will help tremendously.
My Ancestry DNA matches are huge. Responses to my requests for private tree access has been mixed. But at least the process of contacting a member is so simple when compared to 23andMe. Jeff Snavely's AncestryDNA Chrome Extension tool has been a wonderful gift for keeping things organized. If we get some additional tools from Ancestry like triangulation and chromosome browsing it will be the "cats meow"! But in the meantime we must get more folks to upload their raw data to GEDmatch.
