Help! Cannot find any death record for great-grandfather. Small newspaper posting says he died in Tennessee, either in McMinnville or McMinn County in 1885. I continue to run into brick walls and find no records of his death. Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the advice Barbara and thanks Diskoverit for finding those records. All those marriage records look like my Malissa, I've found those before but I'm not to sure about those death certificates. I'm pretty sure that that isn't my Florence.

I believe that this is her on Find A Grave:
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=structuredcraw...

I'm not to sure about that Wesley, I'll have to look more into that. I wish that I could find more records on him.

Can't find anything about death

I'll have to explain some background information first.

My family has always identified as being from the Boyd bloodline, and nobody ever gave it a second thought. I was even taught this my entire life - you're a Boyd, and you should be proud. Now, I started doing research for my family tree without a lot of information. I found a wealth of info about my Boyd line........until I found out that we are not really Boyd's. My great-grandfather's stepfather basically took him as his own, and his mother gave him his stepfather's last name and changed his birth certificate to reflect that! Only a couple of other people in the family knew (go figure).

I know the name of the man who is my great-grandfather's biological father. Supposedly, he got killed at a gas station by a group of men while getting gas one night. I have no idea what year it is, and my grandma's brother said he found the newspaper article in which it described his death, but I haven't been able to find anything about his death. I supposed it would've happened in Kansas. I found his marriage license to my great-grandfather's mother, and I found the day my great-great-grandmother got married to the guy that essentially adopted him (my great grandfather was almost 3 years old).

So, going off of his 1) name, and 2) the fact that he died between 1913 and 1915, and 3) the place of marriage and ages of bride and groom, is there a way I can find his death cert or some evidence of death? His name is fairly common. Herbert E. Reynolds. There are plenty of them in the 1900 and 1910 census. After that, I can't find the right one....which makes sense, because he would've been dead by the 1920 census....and she's remarried by then to the stepdad. The weird part about it was that my great-grandfather was listed as "son" on the 1920 census to the stepdad with his last name...but then "stepson" on the 1930 census with his bio dad's last name!

Does this make sense? Can someone really change the birth certificate 2-3 years after the birth of the child and change the father? Maybe that's how they did it back then, but it's confusing to me. It's almost like "hiding" who his bio father was. They were only married for around 3 years before he presumably died. I wish I could find that article.

Two questions I would love answered about this scenario: How can I find this guy's death? Was it common for birth certificates to get amended to a different father if one died early in a child's life?

Thank you so much if you can help! I am new to all this genealogy stuff.
Oh no! How disappointing. I did find two Eliza Thomas's married to William Thomas's on the 1871 census but of course that doesn't help you find her death record.
Apologies if you have already done this but do the details on her gravestone tie up exactly with the details in the burial records for that church? Did she die elsewhere and then was buried in her hometown?
Other than that it is probably a case of mis-spelling or mis-transcription of the original records. I've found an Esther Thomas died Q3 1876 age 43 in Bedwellty - it's vaguely possible her first name has been incorrectly registered?? Clutching at straws really but you don't know unless you see the actual certificate.
I hope someone else has more of a definite suggestion for you. Good luck!

Assuming that you have already checked the Scottish death index for 1897, then since you know when and where the death took place, I'd suggest checking the death records for the specific parishes nearest to where he died. It is possible that his death record was either mis-indexed or omitted from the index.

It is irrelevant what someone's citizenship status is. If they died in a particular jurisdiction, then that is where the death certificate should be issued and where the historical record would be maintained. In some cases, there might also be a death record in their home country, but that would be in addition to the one in the original place of death.

Tombstone info: Frank Johnson, born Oct 29, 1855, died Jan 17, 1915. This is in New Hope Cemetery, Shelby County, IL. I can't find a death certificate for him. I am assuming he died in Shelby County, Il because all records that I have found shows that he lived in Cold Spring, Shelby County, IL for most of his life. According to census he was born in Missouri, but I don't know city or county. His wife Margaret Elizabeth George Johnson is buried at the same cemetery and I found her death record.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi
Would be so grateful if someone could please help me find a death cert of Elizabeth (Eliza) Thomas died 4th Aug 1876 aged 44, buried Groeswen, Caerphilly. I don't understand why I can't find her death cert. I have been to the grave so she does exist! her baptism cert calls her Elizabeth Watkins, her marriage cert calls her Eliza and Elizabeth on her MI. She married William Thomas and he was noted as living at Cwarra Mawr at the time of her death which is in Caerphilly. The family story was that she died after a fall from a hourse, I'd be so pleased if I could find that out. Thanks in advance!

I know that they dont care where the person died. What I am saying and everyone seems to be missing the point is It does NOT give any location of where his LAST benefit was MAILED to. He died in 1998. And the site I was looking at was a FAKE site if anyone had read my earlier message. It was someone wanting to show how easy it was to steal another person Identy if they wanted to. This person took a bunch of random SS and added fake identies.

I appreciate all the input that has been given but I have moved beyond this question because unless the family wants to know for certain they will have to write to the SSA themselves. it was just a favor for someone that I was looking into.

Thanks
Sue

The Social Security Administration does not keep track of where a person died. It only keeps track of last known location and last known place benefits were mailed.

It doesn't matter to the SSA where a person died -- that's not part of their responsibility. They are only concerned with sending the benefits to the right person/place.

Also, there's no legal way (that I know of) to get a living person's Social Security Number unless you are a private detective. If you are getting a living person's SSN off the Internet then you are probably at an illegal site! Stay away from it!

I took a look around real quick for you. I think the best place to start is at the MA archives. A list of their holdings suggests that they have the records from that hospital. You should probably give them a call and see if they may have specifically what you are looking for and if they could help you. If she died there or was released, it should be documented somewhere in the collection. I hope this helps!

http://www.sec.state.ma.us/arc/arcpdf/sumhold.pdf
