I have a question about a death certificate for my gggg-grandmother, Katherine Steinmetz. The certificate is from Zanesville, Muskingum, Ohio, 1922. Parents are listed as Geo Steinmetz of Germany and Unknown of Germany. The problem with this is that Steinmetz is her married name, so the father should have a different surname, unless she married a cousin. Is it possible that they just used her married name in place of her father's real surname because the real surname was unknown? Was this a common practice? Or should I assume she married someone with her own surname?
Also interesting to note, though unrelated, is that her cause of death is listed as "Drowning (suicidal)". She was 83 years old at the time.
