Death record - Name of mother is really the grandmother

Hello - I have a theory! I think I have it figured out, what do you think?

I have been really confused with the death records for 2 men in my family. Both records for the deaths are 1930s Alabama, and are from the Alabama Deaths and Burial Index, 1881-1974, here on Ancestry. For the father of the male deceased, it makes sense. But the mother of the male deceased listed on the record has thrown me off because it appears to be the paternal grandmother of the deceased, not the deceased's mother.

So my theory. Someone is filling out the form and asking questions of the deceased's relative. They ask the question - Who was his father? So the relative answers and is thinking about the deceased's father. Then the next questions is - And his mother? Since they were just thinking about the deceased's father and just said his name, the question is interpreted to be the deceased father's mother, which would be the deceased's paternal grandmother. Then the person filling out the form says thanks, we are done.

Maybe I'm not the only one to think of this? If I am right this really helps to prove the lineage of one of my direct ancestors.

Thanks in advance for your input! Donna
