Possibly, but only if you can give some indication of when and where you are looking. An approximate decade would be good but even a century might help. Do you have any idea of what continent he was living in, or even which country?

Surnames:
Order the death certificate from the appropriate government entity that holds them in the area where he died if he died after they started keeping death certificates. They often also list where the person is to be buried.
If it was before they started keeping death certificates, try county ledgers in the county where he died.
