Does anyone have any information on John Lowther, my 2nd Gt. Grandfather. He was in The Royal Irish Constabulary from around 1830. He was born in Londonderry in 1809 to father John. He was married to Eliza and had 4 sons, Samuel, Robert, Richard and Edward, and 1 daughter Mary Elizabeth. He later went on to become a Gaol Governor. His two eldest sons, Samuel and Robert were also in the RIC, but later moved to Liverpool with their mother around 1860.

hi john
i have the statements on my computer from the four guys involved. there was a thesis written by a cop in the depot
some years back and i have a copy somewhere. it was very well researched and begun with the cardens right thru to the hand over by the british to jack scott. funny thing is
i remember old jack and his son neil used to show us this old gun which he called the key to the door-apparently the story is jack acquired the old gate house at gunpoint and stayed there!
my gran told me that they stayed all day in the sitting room
watching the street, she blamed stapleton for the house being burned cos he couldnt keep still and kept goin out on the street and to the pub across the road.a picture of the house burned is in the national museum.a copy is on the templemore website in the old photos.if u send me your email address ill forward the statements
and page numbers to u. my granduncle, sean downey, captured DI potter in south tipp and there is a lot on record there too.i know leahy was tormented by wilson, and decided he had to be shot no matter how difficult the task.

Hi there and thanks for your message, I was really interested to receive it. I run the museum in the Garda College and I have done a lot of research on Wilsons death, the miracles and the town hall burning, but I did not know that a house had been burned down because of the shooting of Wilson. I have copies of most of the Tipp IRA statements, but did not find a reference to that. I would love to hear more about it, so I would be happy to meet you some day for a chat. Thanks, John

hi there,
this name jumped out at me whilst trawling the site.
i cant help with family details but DI wilson was shot opposite my house.it was orchestrated from our house, and
it was burned to the ground the following day in retaliation. the planning and reasons for attack have recently been opened to the public with the release of the
ira statements from 1925 online.

Hi,a book called "Devia Hibernia.Road and Route Guide for Ireland of the Royal Irish Constabulary" was published in 1893. It gives the location of every R.I.C. barracks in Ireland at the time. You might be able to download it from somewhere on the internet or find a copy in a national library.

That's excellent actually. We now have a day of birth. Even if he exaggerated his year of birth to enlist, it's likely he kept the day the same. Also, he likely served in the First World War if he was a soldier prior to 1920. There are records to check there.
Thanks.
Tom

Tom
All I can add is this from the book 'Police Casualties in Ireland 1919-1922':
Constable Bowles, from Kent and a single man, would have been 23 on the 18 April 1921. He had eight months' police service, having been a switchboard operator and a soldier before joining the RIC.

Aled

Hello
Would someone have access to some further reference materials for members of the RIC? I'm interested in Charles H. Bowles 72058, age 22 of Kent when he was killed in the bombing of the Rosscarberry Barracks in 1921. So born about 1899. I have not been able to place him with any of the Kent Bowles lines and I'm wondering if there is any more information about where he was from. Neither the 1901 or 1911 censuses of England have him listed in Kent.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Tom

I am trying to find any information on my Grandfather. He was born in Clonmel. His name is Francis Power dob 01/03/1890. I have been informed by relatives that because he was not old enough to join the RIC he used his brothers name Thomas ( not sure if this is true). Around 1920 he commited some crime while in the in RIC and had to leave Southern Ireland and could never return. He received a pension from the RIC and spent the rest of his life in England. He continued to be known as Tommy. His father's name was also Thomas. If any one has information they would be willing to share I would be very grateful. Thank you for reading my email.

I did research William Henry Whiting who married a Juanita in Cork. They are on the 1911 census. But I think this William is Temporary Cadet W. Whiting who served in the RIC at approximately the same time as my William.
