After many years of searching I am no nearer to the truth about my ancestor william Whiting. He Joined the RIC in January 1921 and was posted to Westmeath after training on 25th June 1921. He gave his date of birth as 14th August 1883 and he was recruited in Portsmouth, England. His native county was given as Wiltshire/Hampshire. I have ordered many certificates but have not found anyone with that date of birth. I know his service number was 77987 and he was recorded as being a constable and a protestant. There is no record of him after 1922. He supposedly married Mary Burke in Ireland and had a child with her in 1923. She died shortly after the birth and the daughter was raised in a Convent. I believe he was already married with children in England. What happened to William after 1922? Did he return to England to his wife and children ?

The information I have posted was sent to me from the RUC in 2000. The only other information they gave me was his height and that his trade/calling was Clerk/ex soldier so I presume he served in the army in the 1st World war and he was disbanded with aleaving allowance of £50.14.0d

Yes, that's the full extent of the service record.

Difficult to know what to do now. Without further info I will never know if I am researching the correct William Whiting. I did research William Henry Whiting who married a Juanita in Cork. They are on the 1911 census. But I think this William is Temporary Cadet W. Whiting who served in the RIC at approximately the same time as my William.

I have been researching William Henry the T Cadet.
He too is a difficult man to crack. The 1911 census only gives the family, he is on "Form H" under initials, but that only gives him born England, not the place.
I have his Army record, which indicated that he was born 17 Mar 1881 ( from info given on joining). I cannot tie that to any English records.
Certainly his father was in the army (from the whereabouts of his sisters when he enlisted), and he could be the man born in Ireland in 1882 and lied abot his age to get into the army

This is the info that I have on William Henry Whiting. He was a temporary cadet recruited in England to help bolster the RIC. He was born in Cork Ireland on 2nd February 1882 and joined the RIC on 22nd October 1920. He married Juanita Trigueros in Limerick Ireland in 1904.. He died in Aldershot in 1941 and Juanita died 1967 in Aldershot. They had 5 children, 4 born in England and one born in India. I have traced the family to the present day but not made contact.
The other candidate for my research is William Whiting born 14 August 1885 who joined the RIC 18 January 1921 and posted to Westmeath Ireland. He was disbanded 1st February 1922. I have no other info on this man,
One of these men is the father of my mother in law (now deceased) and I have no way of knowing which one it is without further research. I might add that I have been researching this particular line for many years.

Assuming you have your mother in laws Christian names then the T.Cadets children were (from his army record, on FindMyPast)
1. Henry Francis born 15 Sep 1905 at Aldershot
2, Chas Wm born Woking 7 Feb 1907
3. Maureen Juanita born Gosport born 20 Mar 1908 died at Sea 27 Dec 1908
4. Florence Alice born Subathu on 15 Jun 1909
5. Phyllis Irene born Fermoy on 15 Aug 1911
6. Patricia Anne born Aldershot 24 Jan 1914
If you mother in law is not one of them, then you ought to able to conclude that her father is the other man

My mother in law was born 1923 at Dundalk, County Lough. Her father is named on her birth certificate as William Whiting of the RIC. Her mother was Mary nee Burke who died soon after the birth of her daughter. Maisie, my mother in law, was abandoned by her father and placed into a Catholic orphanage to be raised by the nuns. She was there until she came to England in 1940. At a later date my M.I.L.; was told that her parents did not marry as her father was already married with children back in England so I cannot rule out William Whiting temporary cadet. Nor can I rule out the other William Whiting. So many problems. If only my M.I.L. was still alive so that I could ask questions.

Yes , difficult
All I can add is that the T Cadet served in RIC under his full name William Henry rather than William. I have no idea what happened to him after he was demobilised in Jan 1922 until his death
