What is your Owings line? My is Capt. Richard, Joshua, Richard, Joshua, Richard, Joshua, Francis Marion, Auddie Joshua. After they left Maryland they came to Kentucky "Owingsville" and finally western Missouri. Joshua and his son Andrew "Andy" Peden Owings are confirmed Quantrill and probably include more kith and kin.

David

I could have wrote that a few years ago. We have no firm facts of the origins of Capt. Richard Owen/Owings and Rachel Robert although lore and some data strongly suggest that as a leading possibility. My Y DNA show that we are Scots. Further DNA shows we lived along the Irish Sea. Richard Owings, was a Welsh immigrant who settled in Maryland in the late 17th Century. Virtually all Americans with the surname Owings (using that exact spelling) are descended from Capt. Richard Owings and his wife Rachel.

I have been looking for 30 years for the real name of my great grandfather George Baker who rode w/ Frank and Jesse James and Quantill's raiders. He changed his name to George Baker after he left the gang life and married Margaret Bell Effort, who was either full blood or 1/2 blood Cherokee Indian. They were married in Hempstead, Arkansas and afterwards moved to Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory. It is said by family members that Frank James continued communicating with George by writing many letters to him and even visited him several times after he left the gang. I have been in search of these letters but I have been unable to connect with them. I was hoping to find some clue in the letters as to what George's real name was. The letters were passed on to my cousin's sons, Tom, Steve and Harley Cox, after her death. Tom, Steve and Harley are living in the mid-west (Oklahoma, Missouri).

George was born in about 1845 in New York, his parents were born in Ireland. Have you come across any info that might be familiar to what you have found in your research? Marti

Thank you, Nancy. My grandpa Walker, and my mother, spoke of your family often. My grandfather went to Canada and stayed with William for a while, but he didn't like the winters, lol. I am going to the museum in Lone Jack, MO this year. I have been told they have placed a tombstone in their cemetery for Abner Cunningham, even though he is not there. They also say there is a picture and a story of and about him. One other thing, I am going to Pleasant Hill and libraries to see if I can find out who Matilda's parents are. Again, thank you, Nancy. Ben

Ben, Great Grandfather Abner was listed in the 'Roster of Guerrillas' in "Quantrill and His Civil War Guerrillas" by Carl W. Breihan, Promontory Press, N.Y. (1959). Also - 'Known members of Quantrills, Andersons, and Todd's Guerrillas' - an appendix in "Gray Ghosts of the Confederacy Guerilla Warfare in the West 1861-65" by Richard S. Brownlee, Louisana State University Press 1958.
I also have 3 different published stories that include him as part of Quantrill's band. I'll post them on my tree - tomorrow if I get a chance.

My great great grandfather was Abner (Ab) (Albert) Cunningham. His daughter Annie B Cunningham (Walker) told my grandfather that her father was with Quantrill often. The Union soldiers killed him in Lone Jack MO in 1863. I have read this very thing on lists of Quantrill's Raiders. But that is all I have ever found. Do you know of anything I can read that explains more? Thank you.

Ben

I just saw your post and jumped out of my chair! My family has two very large paintings by a R.P. Thrall dated 1874. The first painting is of my GGGrandfather, John Stum and the second is of the Stum farm house and property outside of Maytown, Pa. I have for years tried to find out who R.P. Thrall was. I hope this is our man. I would appreciate any info you would like to share. I can send you a picture of both of the paintings. Thank you, Gretchen and James

I am going to go out on a limb here and say my first cousins, Shawn Thrall (Donlad's son), and Gregori Thrall are previous posters here. I have heard of this link through my Uncle Chris. I used to have a picture and link to an old culpeper paper article regarding R.P. but can no longer find it online. I believe this story to be accurate and also would like to point out this link, as our former relative is known to be a painter as well.

http://www.superstock.com/stock-photos-images/862-1196

any further info would be much appreciated.
Isn't this just crazy! I love it. Very nice to meet you and I would love to help you both out. Where did Rebecca Jane Flanary live when she hid out Dick Yaeger and when was this? The reason I asked was that The James/Yeager gang robbed the bank in Corydon, Iowa in the period just after the break up of Quantrille's Raiders. Does this make any connections?
On another thought trail, my research says that the early Quantrille gang went down into Texas, this is before the raid on Lawrence, KS, and this could have been when they hooked up with your "James Littleton of Texas". Now we just need to get him connected to your Great Grandmother. If you want to communicate directly, feel free to drop me a line at rhamel@westmont.edu.

This is very wierd, but I was just watching Antiques Road show when they were in Des Moines, IA. A lady presented an ivory handled knife with the name J. Littleton on the handle. Family lore places the knife with a member of Quantrille's Raiders who was hidden out by this woman's female relative. The appraiser suggested she try to verify if a J. Littleton had any connection to Quantrille's Raiders. I googled this search and your querry came up.

Any ideas about this connection?
Robert Hamel, Santa Barbara, CA

I have copies of old documents and pictures of a relative of mine that I have been told rode with Quantrill and was involved in maybe the first daylight bank robbery in this country as an early member of the James gang when Jesse was recovering from wounds received at the end of the war and was not present. His name was Redmond Munkers. He was shot to death by Federal agents at the front door of his Mother's home while She was trying to protect him. This happened somewhere in Missouri before the James gang became so famous. His name does not appear on the Quantrill roster and I cannot find much information on him. Do you have anything?

I found no record that he rode with Quantrill, but that’s not to say he didn’t, it just means “I”, don’t have any. The national park service has only one Calvin Williamson, in their registry. and he was in the; CSA - Company D, 18th Virginia H.V. Artillery.

Dennis S.
