I am trying to find information about my 3rd great grandfather Henry England, who was from near Alfreton in Derbyshire. He is listed as an 'inmate' in the 1871 census for Derby prison. However, I cannot find out any more about his crime or any sentence he received. On his marriage certificate his father's name is given as 'Haywood' so I have tried that as well - but no luck. Can anyone help?

There is a Ben Davis in the 1900 census from Kentucky born about 1875? A prisoner may come and going between census dates and thus not appear in any prison census records. I found no deaths or Jerry Kirk of Davis either.
Prior to 1930 Moundsville housed a lot of federal prisoners also because they did so at a low cost. Prisoner were hired out to manufactured who had plants right in the prison yard and this paid for the cost of maintaining prisoners.
I will have to dig a little deeper to find a better date he may have been there. I so I can get you his department of correction record card. I have been trying to get a nome profit organization to post the information which I have but on interest so far. Contact me directly harryforr@aol.com

Hello,
Wow, that is a lot of work that you have done. I hope you are going to publish it or write a book or something. I have been trying to find my step great-grandfather for a number of years, in the prison records. He supposedly killed a man and went to prison for several years in the early 1900s. His name was Jerry Kirk but he also used the name Jerry Davis. He was born in 1879 in Martin Co, KY. If you have seen his name please let me know. Thanks for any help,
Melinda

At any rate, would he have been at Moundsville, since he lived in WV? Was Moundsville the only prison in WV at that time? If anyone can tell me any information I will be forever grateful!
I finally found someone to message on the website for the Texas Department of Corrections. Sent them an email with the persons name and date of death I was interested in. Didn't hear anything from them for close to 3 weeks. Finally I recieved mail from them. They were able to send me some court documents showing the crimes he was convicted of and some mugshots. Cost me $1.08 for everything. Still have to find court records involving his crime but they helped out a lot.

there is no prison 'in' Los angeles. Do you mean jail? if so he'd had been at County General Hospital. If sent to a prison it could be any number of southern california prisons in service at the time. Have you his death certificate? It may have clues.

I just saw it is LA county, not city you mean.
the state prison is at Lancaster, CA
contact info is here
http://www.cdcr.ca.gov/Facilities_Locator/LAC.html
ask if they have older records. if not contact the local (to prison) historical society-old institutional records are usually remnded to them.

Campbell confessed it was him. My grandfather was also released early, but died in a car wreck less than a year after released. I know Delmas's mother drew up a petition to get him released early as he didn't actually murder Carney. I have alot of info on this murder.
Thank you SO much for your help! He indeed returned at some point because they went on to have many other children, but all of these children remained living in Grafton, WV with Lena (the wife) and her father. They all have William listed on the birth certificate, however, and he dies somewhere around 1929, so he is not on the 1930 census. Their last child was born around that time as well, so it would seem he was indeed the father of the others. (For a time, I thought perhaps the other children came from other men and her husband was just listed on the birth certificate to "save face". It would seem, however, that he really was their father, because the timing of her last child being born, and his death, coincides.)I know that on the 1930 census, she is, for the first time, listed as a widow. Also, my mother told me that his children talked about how he wasn't home for a long stretch of time, and then would "come and go". I thought perhaps a prison stint might explain why 2 of their first children ended up in an orphanage. The only child they had at the time who didn't go to the home was a daughter (it was a boys home only) who later died. I thought perhaps after he returned from wherever he was he may have been working out of town, living with relatives, and sending $ back home to her. I am trying to check census records for his many brothers and sisters to see if he is listed in their homes but have found nothing yet. Again, I thank you for your help. I swear I'm gonna figure this out one day! lol My mother who is now 73 has wondered her entire life why her father had to be put in an orphanage at 5 years old, but of course they didn't speak about things like that back then. :/

I just noticed there was a death certificate for Thelma McAfee daughter of William and Lena in July 1924 Taylor Co. So they most have been together in 1923? I am going to one of the very old funeral homes in Mouodsville tomorrow in search of death records for Moundsville prison inmates and will check to make sure. If he was there in 1925 or so and died before 1930 he would not have showed up in the 1930 census. There marriage index for 1911 is available.

There is no census record for any McAfee in Moundsville prison either 1920 or 1930. Of course with a short sentence between census date one would not appear. Nor is there any death record for William McAfee at this prison.Could he have been in WW1?

Hello! I saw your post and was wondering if you could help me. I have a great grandfather who goes "missing" from census records, but is not dead, around 1920. His name is William McAfee Jr. and he was from the Wheeling WV/Pittsburgh PA area. He married my G-Gma Lena Fawcett McAfee in 1912 and they had two children; Robert and William Jr.(yes it is Jr. AGAIN instead of the II,lol), then by the 1920 census, both boys are in St Johns Home for Boys in Wheeling, and Lena is back with her father in Grafton WV. I was wondering if William McAfee was perhaps put in prison for a time and this could explain the "absence". Thanks for any help!!
Julie Royce

They go back at least 30 years and before that you can get some info but not all as most records, other than name and brief info, are not kept after 30 years.
I just found my father in the 1940 census in prison in Missouri he had told us kids a little bit but I am finding that the whole truth was not told. It is not bad but it was just something they never talked about. The old skeleton in a closet thing. Anyway good luck in your search and hope this helps.
Hello. I am looking for information about my dad, George Oliver Crabtree. He went away for several years from 1970-1972. I was told that he went to a TB sanitorium called Stillwater in Columbus. I tried to look up information about this institution but it was not located in Columbus but near Dayton Ohio. It is now closed. I was also told that he might have went to prison. I looked up info and there was a TB hospital on the grounds of the old Ohio State Penitentary. Does any have any info about how I can get some factual info about either the Stillwater Sanitorium or past inmate records from the Ohio State Penitentary????
p.s. I looked up online that OSP closed it's doors in 1972, which fit the facts of what I have. I just need past inmate or patient records.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Cemcrawler. I was wandering if you would not mind helping me as well. I also had a grandfather in ward 2 Moundsville State Prison in the 1910 census but I do not know why he was there. His name was Albert Webb age 24. I would very much appreciate it if you could find anything about this.
Thanks, JARPAC1956
