Prison Hulk Records-Abbreviations
Hi, could someone help me to understand what Pd means in the last column before a date. My ancestor John Hawkins is on the Ganymede in 1828. He is found 8th from the bottom on the right hand page. Any help gratefully received.

Hi Sam, many thanks for the reply. I thought it may be pardoned but a few rows up the is Pard. On looking again, I think that there is 2 people writing in this book & Pd could well be pardoned as well!!! Many thanks for getting me to look closer. Best wishes, Pam

Re: Prison Hulk Records-Abbreviations
Hello Pam, Ive been looking into the Prison Hulk Ganymede and came across a letter in the National Archives concerning John Hawkins. I have applied for a copy of the letter as it may be relevant to an ancestor of mine. The only snippet I have been able to read is this: Letter says John Hawkins is substituted in place of Joseph Mann because Mann's relations have interceded on his behalf and he has promised to amend his ways. Also includes letter from Mann. Doesnt sound very good for your John and I'm not even sure its the same Joseph im looking for but I thought it may be of interest to you. This Joseph was sentenced in 1826 so I'm not sure when John Hawkins received his sentence. Regard, Heidi.

Re: Prison Hulk Records-Abbreviations
Hi Heidi, many thanks for replying. That`s very interesting. I guess he was sent on the ship in place of Joseph Mann. I think that my John returned home before his full sentence, he did return but there may be doubt over the father of my ancestor Alfred if he served his full time! Have you tried searching newspapers for info on your Joseph? I saw the actual paper for my Johns case & it is now online I believe on Find my Past (they have a free weekend coming up if you want to search). I am no longer a paid member of Ancestry or FMP, I hope to do more research when I have more time. Here is a bit about my John
John married Ann in 1826.On 1st Dec 1827 he , 2 of his brothers (Samuel & Robert),and 3 other men ( Job Arthur , Thomas Jones & John Staines), were poaching on land belonging to JR West esq of Alscot. They were poaching at Alderminster. The men were caught by the game keeper (Wm Tucker) but they beat him up, and robbed him of his gun and book. The men were apprehended by the police constable of Stratford on Avon - Mr Ashfield. All 5 were tried & found guilty. John Hawkins & Thomas Jones were sentenced to 7 years transportation, the other 3 were given 12 months hard labour. Alfred was the child born when he returned from his sentence.
Many thanks for the info. Best wishes, Pam

Re: Prison Hulk Records-Abbreviations
Hello Pam, Ive tried to find newspaper articles but havn't found any yet. Where did you find the one you have? The Joseph I'm looking for got 7 years transportation for stealing a handkerchief. I'm hoping to make the most of the find my past free weekend as well as they may have more information on the prison hulks there. I could be looking at the wrong person so i'm hoping the letter will give more details of his family. Will let you know if theres anything of interest on your John Hawkins.
Heidi.

Re: Prison Hulk Records-Abbreviations
Hi Heidi, I found the paper at Warwick records Office. It was in the Berrows Worcester Journal, articles about the crime, trial & removal between Dec 1827 & May 1828. Good luck with your search, hoping the letter helps you, sounds exciting! Best wishes, Pam
