I have a relative who was sentenced to 7 years transportation which I believe meant off to Australia!

My relative was released early from Portsmouth prison, and there the trail ends, does anyone know what happens after early release? This was in 1854 and I cannot find them on any subsequent census or record of death.

Transportation was transportation and it meant for life...not for 7 years. The 7 years thing was for indentured servants and was totally different. If he turns up missing then I would guess he was actually that -- missing because he was gone somewhere, either transported or indentured to one of the many colonies. It sounds like you found this information in prison records, however you should look to actual criminal records for a full description of what happened to him. That will be key (and extremely interesting!).

Best of luck.
