i am trying to find prison records or any sort of records for a member/prisoner of the Georgia Chain Gang. this would be for my paternal grandfather who also changed his surname. i dont have to much info since i dont know his name or when he "served time". he legally changed his last name to "Stuart" from "Haywood" and his first name was either John or James. the name change had to be prior to 1947 since when my father was born he had the last name Stuart. where would i find records of men involved in the chain gangs? i have never met my grandparents and my parents divorced when i was a baby so i have very little info on my paternal side. i would appreciate any help you can give.
