Hello Trish. I am curious about your interest in pirates (Long Island, 1600s) One of my New Amsterdam ancestors was Anthony Van Salee, and he and his brother both lived in New Amsterdam before Anthony and his wife moved to Long Island at the legal behest of the New Amsterdam Court. They are shown on the 1660 map by Jacques Cortelyou, also an ancestor of mine. Also shown is a Jan Jansen. Anthony and his brother were the sons of a Jan Jansen, who named himself Murat Rais when he became the head of the Sultan of Morocco's piracy fleet. I am wondering if their father may have become active out of that area late in life. Does this fit into your area of interest? The Father (Jan Jansen/Murat Rais) has been written of by Irish Journalist Des Eakin regarding his infamous foray into Baltimore, Ireland, and his similar adventure to Iceland is well recorded. These activities were out of his Morocco locations. And Samuel Pepys writes that the two sons were mulatto.

i was looking into some of my family history about the locke family. there was a matthew locke that had been a "director" of the Muscovy Company. he had apparently funded some voyages for a man, Martin Frobisher (b. approx. 1535-d. 1594).
now, martin was charged 3 seperate times with piracy, none of the charges ever made it to court...also he was nighted by queen elizabeth I for his service against the spanish armada.
my question is about a pirate named STRANGEWAYS. it was said that there's a possibility that frobisher ran with this particular pirate on some of their escapades. i don't know anything much about this 'strangeways' except his name. i don't know if he has any connection to me what so ever.
it is said that matthew locke (mentioned above) was a bit of an adventurer himself...so who knows what he got into that isn't known....but i find myself intrigued by pirates and would like to know more if anything about this 'strangeways'.
i just think it's crazy that these governments created the need for these guys (and woman) then condemned them when they weren't needed any longer. but whatever.
i would appreciate any help at all, if anyone is able to offer.
thank you
melanie
I just today returned from a trip to savannah. I took the tour (trolley tour) , and the driver did specifically mention the tunnels, as we drove by the 'pirate house, as well as the notion of being "shanghaiid" in a drunken stupor, whilst in a time and town where rum was illegal.
The pirate house also served as inspirational for robert louis stephenson "treasure island" (r5emember the inn wher the character tom was, in the beginning of the book) it actually looked familiar to me, perhaps from the movie, or illustrations from the book. The town of Savannah is wonderfully rich in history, and a nice place to visit. I also stayed one night on an island called tyvee, about half hour from savannah. It was probably pirate heaven, back in the day........It has some beautiful beaches, and i had some very frightening dreams the one night i stayed on the beach. I am coninced the area , and its specific "energy" was responsible for these vivid, scary dreams that made me wake in a cold, sweaty panic, dreaming i was running from what looked like well.....pirates. sounds crazy but its true. sincierly, pabz...p.s. pls pardon my typing.

Info I have on Capt KIDD and Joseph BRADISH

Some articles I have in a file:

"Pirates and Prohibition" Excerpted from "East Hampton History" by Jeannette Edwards Rattroy, copyright 1953, printed by Country Life Press, Garden City, NY
(www.longislandgenealogy.com/pirates.html)

Unknown source, photocopies of some pages in a book a lady sent me, pgs 77-84 and looks like book may have been published around 1850. Can snail mail these if interested.

"Pirates and Buccaneers of the Atlantic Coast" by Edward Rowe Snow, The Yankee Publishing Company, 72 Broad Street, Boston, 1944. Has plate ("photo") of KIDD.

My story: I am distantly related to Joseph BRADISH, a pirate, born in Cambridge, Mass 28 Nov 1672. Many mistaken him as being associated with KIDD. The only relationship between the two goes back to the jail in Boston. Caleb RAY, a jailer, was a relative of Joseph BRADISH. He allowed BRADISH and another man (Tee WETHERLY) escape. RAY was discharged of his duties and when BRADISH was captured and put back in the Boston stone jail, he didn't have any family left to let him go again. Between his excape and recapture KIDD was captured and placed in the same jail. Not wanting another escaped pirate, Governor BELLOMONT had KIDD wear irons. KIDD and BRADISH were prisoners on the man-of-war Advice to London. BRADISH and WETHERLY were hanged at Hope Point in London in 1699.

I, too, am seeking the ancestry of Captain William KIDD. All I know is that he was born about 1645 in Greenock, Scotland. His father was John KIDD, a Presyterian minister. His mother's name is unknown. In 1691 Captain KIDD married Sarah BRADLEY COX OORT, a wealthy widow who had daughters by previous marriages. I do not know if he had children of his own. I have contacted the author of a book on Captain KIDD -- he knew nothing more than this.

Hello, I'm new here. Just found out that there is actually a message board for pirates. I'm looking for a pirate, in fact a whole family of pirates, who ran afoul of The Law and were sent to Georgia...only when they arrived the ship was flying the Jolly Roger and the former crew was no longer in evidence.
They went on from Savannah to New Orleans and joined LaFitte fighting the British in the Battle of New Orleans. Things got hot for them afterwards and most went "honest" starting plantations, etc. Some went The Texas. Head of the family liked pirating and stayed with the sea. Probably came to a bad end. No dates on this except for The Battle of New Orleans, which was 1815. Anybody heard of pirates named "FORD" or JFORD" or FORDE"? My husband goes by "Foul Frank". Maybe they all have aliases! ;o)

I believe you mean "Spanish" not French. The spanish occupied Florida and the English here in Georgia were afraid of invasion. That's why when the colony of Georgia was established there were four things outlawed. Attorneys, Catholics, Slavery and hard spirits. Beer and Wine were ok. I happen to live in Savannah and know the stories. The French were more involved in the western territories on the Mississippi river.

Thanks, I will take the tour. I'm curious though, why haven't I seen any information online mentioning Savannah like I have seen mentioned about Charleston and other cities? I'm wondering if Savannah was a refuge of sorts rather than a victim city like Charleston was. I have heard that Savannah was a very seedy city in the past. This would make sense that the city would welcome the pirates and their business and gold and turn an eye in exchange. We have just finished a virtual tour of River Street and Bay Street in Savannah, Ga. if you or anyone else would like to "take a virtual walk" down either of those streets.
http://www.quantumtour.com
Greg

I found the old tunnel from the pirates house, it is in the brick wall behind the Marriot Inn, but is it blocked off either by a cave in(lots of construction there) or on purpose.
Scallywag was the one they talked about most.

Pirates in Savannah Georgia

I have been looking online for information on Pirates In Savannah Georgia. I have heard Savannah was a wild and dirty town in the early days and there are claims here that it was somewhat of a pirate town. Stories here claim many sailors were "shanghai'd" as was the term used for getting a sailor drunk then putting him on a ship as a crew member without his permission. The Sailor would "come to" from his drunk and find himself already out to sea. There is a resturant here in Savannah named the "Pirate House" that claims its fame from being a "pirate hangout" There are also rumors and stories of a tunnel from its depths to the riverfront that shanghai'd sailors were transported through to the ships. I have researched online and haven't found one mention of Savannah. Charleston, Beaufort yes, but Savannah no. With all the channels and barrier islands here is seems a perfect place for their use. There is even an island near Savannah named "Blackbeards Island" I know they travelled back and forth past Savannah so I'm sure it was one of their stopping points. Anyone with any information, please email me or leave a message here.

According to another researcher, William was the name of John's father.I am not sure this is YOUR William. They may have spelled their name Morrall at that time. You can check with this researcher about the Morrell/ Murrell name.
Laura aerie1@ix.netcom.com
She also has messages on genforum regarding the Murrell/Morrall surname.
Best of luck!
Susan
I'm looking for info on the pirate Blackbeard. I have seen his name listed as Edward Thach and many other names. The two names that are most often associated with him are Edward Teach and Edward Drummonds. I know he came from a wealthy family in England, but would like info on who his descendents are and who his ancestors are. does anyone have him on their family tree?

Southold Long Island Pirates? late 1600's

Are there any reference books which name pirates? Was Southold a nest of pirates?

1. I notice in the wills of the people (John Budd) I'm tracing of Southold, Suffolk, NY in the late 1600's that there is no mention of God. Isn't that unusual?

2. Despite the fact that these folks were supposedly merchants who travelled to the 'South Seas" and built homes in the "Antigua style" (John Budd's home - now an historic site), in their wills they do not leave their ships or interests in their ships to heirs. The Dutch in NYC did leave shipping interests to heirs in that time period.

3. The late 1600's census shows the population to be English, Dutch, Blacks, Indians, and an unusual number of French.

4. People living in the area that is now Westchester Co., NY, then part of the Connecticut Colony complained of pirates in that area along the coast. Some of these folks from Southold also owned land in Rye. People in the Caribbean were complaining of French pirates.

5. David Gardiner of Gardiner's Island testified at the trial of Capt. Kidd who was hanged in 1701. Kidd had stopped at Gardiner's Island and left some material there and had requested sheep for his voyage. There were rumors of buried treasure on Gardiner's Island for years.

6. The coast in that area has many coves and islands - natural places to hide and maintain boats.

I'm also at a dead end with a Jonas Winters who married Ruth Corwin in Setauket.. I just noticed in the 7Oceans site that a John and a Christopher Winters were pirates. A Christopher Winters had alot of trouble with the Mass. church elders and was dismissed. A John Winters was murdered in early Massachusetts.

Pirates in South Carolina

Has anyone come across the name of John Murrell?
He was said to have been a pirate in the 1700's. He was supposed to have been the person Murrell's Inlet was named for. This is a place in South Carolina. I wanted to know if he had a relative, Robert Murrell from Berkeley, SC. Robert lived in the late 1600's to the early 1700s. He lived in the Christ Church Parish area of Charleston (Charles Town) SC.
Thanks for any help!
Susan

John Budd is an ancestor of mine. The information that I have is this: John Budd came to America on a ship called the Swallow in 1632 from England where he was born ca. 1600. I have him listed as a Puritan who originally settled Southold, NY. He married Katherine Brown while in England and she is a descendant of Sir Anthony Browne. I am researching my ancestory and i found our family tree documented by my great grandmother in the 1960's. i hopes this helps your research as well.
