Abstracted from "The Encyclopedia of Western Lawmen & Outlaws" by Jay Robert Nash:
Port Stockton---born 1864, killed January 10, 1881 near Farmington NM.
Ike Stockton---died shortly after September 27, 1881, possibly in or near Durango CO.
A check of their death records may provide information.
From the 1880 federal census for Animas Arriba, Rio Arriba Co., New Mexico:

There is a story in my family about William M. Hall. William b. 1866 in Texas(?). One story is that he shot and killed a man. His mother begged him to leave in fear of him being hanged. He left and changed his name to William M. Hall. Story #2, is that he was an outlaw. On his deathbed, he supposedly confessed to being an outlaw. The name Issac does come up. Also, there is na Issas Brown Smith that was around this family. I have photos of these people. William supposedly met his wife, Mary Ellen Light Robinson in Kansas. Story is he and an aquaintance rode into town firing their six-shooters. William and his wife lived in Kansas (Silverdale) and Oklahoma. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? Sarah

I am sorry, I am sure that your family legend is not my family. My Issac Stockton was born in Texas and met his wife Amanda Ellen Robinson there. I hope you find you family. Sorry I could not help.

I am related to the line of Hugh Patton Stockton, born 11 April 1827 in Decatur, Rhea County, Tennessee.
First wife was Elizabeth Crews, born 1833, Rhea County, Tennessee. Second wife was Margaret Amanda Morrow, born 17 February 1836 in Tennessee.
I have never heard of the Stockton Gang until today. Just curious, but is my family line of Stockton related to the Stockton Gang line?
Thanks in advance. Patty Quinn Meigs

Isaac & Porter Stockton's (who the Stockton Gang was named after) parents were Samuel Stockton and Jane Hickey. Samuel was born about 1814 in Tennessee. His brother was William Stockton born about 1810. So it is very possible that my family and yours are related. I had my father participate in the Stockton DNA Project and we are finding other relatives. I have strong documentation but only up to Samuel. So far nothing further. But I am determined to find out what family Samuel came from.

"After Durango took over from Animas City the place quickly became a brawling frontier town. This was the Saturday night town, the payday town. Every wisecracker with a mouth full of dust and a six gun came to town looking to shake off the last week of cow punching, or mine digging, or tree cutting, and on and on.
"During the rest of the week Durango was a supply center with beautiful ranches surrounding the town. The ranches were owned by wealthy cattle barons and they hired well known gun slingers to protect their property. One of the most notorious was the Stockton gang. This bunch pretty much did what they pleased around Durango. They were constantly fighting, and having shootouts with a rival gang from Farmington. Finally, the newspaper editor spoke out and published a demand for the Stockton gang to leave town. Ike Stockton himself went in to deal with the editor and was surprised to find he was a woman, Mrs. Romney. Her continued actions and those of the whole town finally drove the gang away.
"The Stockton gang left Durango and rode into Silverton next. Here they quickly ended up killing the Silverton Sheriff and getting a reward of $2,500 on each of their heads. Well now, it seems Ike Stockton was not involved in the killings. So, he proceeded to capture and turn in one of his own gang members for the reward money. The betrayed gang member was lynched. A few days later, Silverton Deputy Sheriff Jim Sullivan shot Ike Stockton himself claiming that he hated a traitor more than a murderer."
