Turner Grants Parole For Adair County Slayer

After serving 20 years of a life sentence for killing an
Adair county policeman, Marion Jewell was granted a parole
Friday by Gov. Turner.

...

Jewell was sent to the state penitentiary at McAlester in
April 1927, after his conviction in the murder of Tom Rather.
Parole board records show Rather, a night patrolman at
Westville, was killed a few minutes after he was called to
a Westville tavern to investigate a fight.

Trial witnesses said Rather found Jewell in a parked car
and ordered him out. Instead, they said, Jewell shot the
officer with a .45 caliber pistol.

Two Years With Dairy

Jewell escaped from prison in August 1939, and was not
returned until September 1941. He spent the two years
working for a dairy in southern California.

Clemency was recommended by C.P. Buford, penitentiary warden,
who said, except for the escape, Jewell has maintained
a good prison record. The parole also was recommended by
J.T. Parks, the trial judge and six members of the trial jury.

Major objections came from W.A. Corley, a former Adair county
attorney, and Clyde Rather, son of the dead man. Twice, Jewell
has been denied a parole recommendation by the board - in
1943 and again in 1947. When the case came up last December
the board deferred any action until its meeting last month.
