Government agency, possibly FBI

It's the belief of the family that my great great grandfather was a member of the government, quite possibly the FBI. My great grandmother said he was a "man of mystery" that was often away on a job. She recalled, according to her children, that he was part of the FBI. Others say she just said government.

I'm having trouble figuring out how to research him. I can find NO records on him anywhere. In early 1900s-1914 he was in White County Arkansas (or at least his family was). But there's no census record. No divorce record (his wife remarried in 1914) that I can find. No death record. NO RECORD. I've been banging my head against this brick wall for years, and am desperate for help.

I would love any ideas. Thank you!
