Hi Susan
My brother was DNA swabbed to try to determine if we do have Indian blood, but then we realised the male line comes from England, The Indian blood would be through the female side, probably a female descendent of Evaline Weatherford, who married Kimbrough Jones. Evaline was Cordelia's mother. I remember you wrote that your great-grandmother (Adlai Hardin Bass Hoyle) used to speak of your grandmother (Evaline Weatherford) as being of Creek blood. The best way to find out for sure would be dna mapping. Anyone with Indian blood will have a particular marker that only exists in people descended from north American indians. Do you know of any women in your family who has had this test? I could do it, but it would trace my mother's line only, it has to be a woman descended from Evaline Weatherford. Susan, my email is laura.hardin@htb.org.uk. Send me an email and I'll send you more details, too much info for this site. Thanks so much.
Hi Susan, Adlai had a son named Irving. He was my grandfather. Susan, my brother Dan Hardin has had a dna test to see where our family came from. Can you send me your email address and I'll send you more info? Mine is laura.hardin@htb.org.uk. Also, to find out for sure if we have Indian blood through Cordelia, we'd need a dna test from one of her female descendents. You might fit that category.

Since we've last corresponded I've been in touch with others from this line and I'd love to share that with you. Please get in touch. Thanks so much! Laura Hardin

First off, Wes Hardin was convicted of murder for the death of Charlie Webb. This did not mean he actually killed him so that is covered and somewhat debatable in our book.
There was no gang and they were not what you would call outlaws. That is misleading. John Wesley Hardin killed people. He did not steal or rob but was handy with guns.
He was a wanted man for murder and nothing more. The reward was $4,000. He fled to Florida under alias name, then Alabama. He was captured (not legally arrested) in Pensacola, FL and finally the court allowed him to be transferred back to Texas. He should have been tried in a different location and would probably have received a much shorter sentence if convicted elsewhere.
The 300 citizens who stormed the jail is not debatable also. It is alleged that only six men did the lynching and could have been Texas Rangers (some say). The people who were lynched were in protective custody. They were Joe Hardin, Wes Hardin's older brother, who was an attorney and local businessman. The others were two of Hardins cousins, Dixons. None of these men had anything to do with the killing of Webb or any other person Wes Hardin had killed. So the lynching was plain murder.
A new book on the biography of John Wesley Hardin will be released in May, 2013 "A Lawless Breed".
I think Chuck Parsons and I, Norman Wayne Brown, will give readers a good, indepth story of his complete life and the people and events that surrounded him. We looked at every killing claimed by Wes and any killings claimed upon him by authorities and the results.
The book will be hardbound, 500 plus pages with 84 illustrations and published by UNT Press, Denton, TX; price $29.95.
Hi. I have been told that I am distantly related to John Wesley Hardin, via my maternal great-grandmother. My grandmother related that her grandmother spent the family fortune on lawyer fees, etc.. My Great-grandmother's name was Harden, I believe she was a neice, not a direct descendant. Still, its interesting. I would like to get more info on John Wesley Hardins parents and grandparents. Where would be a good starting spot?

Sorry, but you apparently have been given some misinformation. Levi "BOONE" Helm did NOT have a sister named Lucinda Helm.
Levi "BOONE" Helm (1827-1864)was the son of Joseph Helm II (1787-1876) and Nancy Wilcox (1795- ).
His sisters were Elizabeth (1823-1845), Catherine (1826-1871), Mary (1830- ) and Martha (1834-1922).
Levi "BOONE" Helm was MARRIED to LUCINDA Frances Browning, daughter of Charles Browning. Levi "BOONE" Helm and LUCINDA Frances Browning were the parents of one child, Lucy B. Helm (b.1852).
Can find no connection to the Willis family. Sorry.

My Great Grandmother was Helm's sister. Lucinda Helm, married to Robert Willis. Yes, they had relations in Missouri. My Great Great Grandfather Anderson Willis lived in Missouri. When I was younger, my uncle S.R. "Buck" Willis used to tell how my grandpa Fike Willis would tell how Helm was his uncle. My grandpa was born in 1889. When they hung him in Virgina City, he said "Hooray for Jeff Davis, I'll be there to open the gates for you boys. Let'er rip."

My wife is related to Boone Helm, the notorious outlaw and cannibal, through her Missouri relatives. And we will often visit his grave at Virginia City, Montana. Best wroiteup on Boone Helm is in the april 1973 True West magazine. Lots of mentions about Helm in Montana history books. My wife, Carol Gilluly, has done some limited research on this creep. Some members of her family refuse to talk about the man. We think the guy is sort of fascinating. Black sheep, indeed, but it's all history.

The only real issue, in my experience, has been the mis-attribution of Benjamin Two Hardin, yes the name is real and Benjamin Watson Hardin. They both were roughly contemporaries in Polk/Liberty counties of Texas. Somewhere, by my best analysis, before the advent of computerized census and other archival records, someone either deliberately or by accident placed Benjamin Watson Hardin as the grandfather of John Wesley Hardin (the outlaw). Unfortunately, versions of this incorrect genealogy are publicized on the Internet, mainly at some Old West sites.

JWH was a legend in his own time and he knew it and played on it. He became famous or infamous, depending on one's point of view. Also the westerns craze in the 1950's and 1960's also may have made people want to connect to a famous western cowboy/gunman/gunfighter. Not all of JWH's family were proud of the violence surrounding him, his brothers and other cousins. Being a Hardin or a Clements could and sometimes did attract unwanted attention, in the last half of the 1800's in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.

My GGG grandfather was William Barnett Hardin II of Blum, Hill County, Texas. JWH stayed at his farm some and there are letters from my GGG granddad to JWH in the JWH collection at Texas State University in San Marcos. My great-grandmother, Mamie Hardin Simmons had a saying, "Live by the gun, die by the gun". Doing both was too common for a couple of generations of Hardin men.

Off the top of my head I can name several direct relatives of JWH who all died of violence, the last being his cousin by marriage, "Killin Jim Miller" in 1909 in Oklahoma.

Here is the short list:

* John Wesley Hardin - shot 1895
* Joseph Gibson Hardin Sr, brother - hung by vigalantes in Comanche, TX 1874
* William Bud Dixson, cousin - hung by vigalantes in Comanche, TX 1874
* Thomas Lee Dixson, cousin - hung by vigalantes in Comanche, TX 1874
*Jefferson Davis Hardin, brother - shot in Clairemont, Texas 1901
* Emmanuel Mannen Clements Sr, cousin - shot in 1887 in Ballenger, Texas
* James Thomas Clements, cousin - probably killed in 1897 for abusing his wife by her kin
*James Brown Miller 'Killin Jim', cousin by marriage and friend - lyched by vigalantes in 1909 in Oklahoma
* Emanuel Mannen Clements, Jr., cousin - shot in El Paso saloon 1908

These are just the one's that I personally know of that were killed by or due to violence.

I know of two of the wives that deliberately changed the names of their children, in attempt to distance them from the violence that seemed to plague the Hardin & Clements.

1. John Wesley Hardin's aunt, Easter Mary Hardin married James R. Clements. Her first son was named James Hardin Clements. She changed the spelling of his name to "Clemons", for his protection. He lived and died peacefully.

2. Ida Mae Croussore, first wife of Jefferson Davis Hardin, changed the last names of her three children by him to his middle name of Davis, after they divorced because of the continuous violence and brushes with the law. All three lived to die naturally. Her son, named John Wesley Davis (originally Hardin), had some dealing with violence and spent time in the Oklahoma State Penitentiary.

It seems that for the most part, the settlement and modernization of the west, had much to do with the decrease in the violence in the family.
That's fascinating information! So your gg grandfather was JW's uncle. I was motivated to do some additional research on the Hardin side of the family after talking with a distant Hardin cousin last week who was also doing some genealogy research, and we started talking about how mean some of the Hardins were. She wondered if some of the Hardins had a genetic pre-disposition to nastiness! My great grandfather (Tully Bostic Hardin of Star TX) was so nasty and abusive that one of his sons (my great uncle) chased him off the farm and threatened to kill him if he came back after he beat one of their horses to death. I believe he also beat his loved ones. Turns out (after speaking to this Hardin relative who is a descendent of one of Tully's brothers) that his brothers were just as mean and cruel. So I understand exactly what you mean. My father never understood why he was never allowed to even meet his grandfather, but it makes a lot of sense to me. She was just trying to protect him from being tainted by his bad disposition and cruel nature.

Thanks for the clarification Bruce! There’s so many Benjamins, I can understand how people became confused. My Benjamins were a lot farther back…the original Benjamin, I suppose. I am the great granddaughter of Tully Bostick Hardin of Texas, who was the son of Daniel Elijah Hardin (b. 1836 in Edgefield, SC) and Lucinda Jane Poole.
His father was William Adolphus Hardin (b. 1811 in SC) married to Sarah English
His father was Elijah Hardin (b. 1775 in SC) also married to a Sarah, last name unknown.
His father was Jonathan Hardin (b. 1738 Orange Co, NC)
His father was Joseph Hardin (b. 1704 Orange Co, NC) married to Elizabeth Martin
His father was Benjamin Hardin Sr (b. 1680 on Staten Island, NY) married to Sarah Stanley, who had a son named Benjamin Jr (b. 1699/1700)....and that is the Benjamin Jr who was the father of Colonel Joseph Hardin, the great grandfather of JWH.
There’s always a chance that some of this information is incorrect (as you’ve tried so hard to set right), because I’ve put this together using census records, family records and other people’s work that’s been published on the internet, and that’s always a wild card!
There are two distinct families with the last name of Hardin, who settled in what is now Polk and Liberty counties of Texas, during the Republic of Texas era (1836 - 1846).

The first family is that headed by Swan Hardin & Jerusha Blackburn. The prominent sons of this family were (1) Benjamin Watson Hardin (2)Augustine Blackburn Hardin (3)Judge William Hardin (4) Benjamin Franklin 'Frank' Hardin and (5)Milton Ashley Hardin.

The second family was headed by Benjamin Hardin II and Martha Ann 'Patsy' Barnett. Prominent children of this marriage were (1)William Barnett Hardin (2) Joseph Gibson Hardin (father of John Wesley Hardin) (3)Martha Balch Hardin (mother of Mannen Clements) (4)Robert Echison Hardin (5)Benjamin P Hardin (6)Mary Easter Hardin and 5 other children.

Benjamin Hardin II was the son of Col. Joseph Hardin, who Hardin County, Tennessee is named after and Jane Gibson.

Swan Hardin was the son of William Everett Hardin and Sarah Bledsoe of Georgia.

The two Hardin families of Polk and Liberty Counties, Texas are distantly related. Both Benjamin Hardin II (1780 - 1845 Polk Co, TX) and Swan Hardin (1773 - 1829 Liberty Co, TX) are the GG grandsons of Martin Hardin (1650 France - 1706 Virginia) and Madeleine DuSauchoy (1656 - 1735).

There are reliable historical records of both of these Hardin clans in the custody of State of Texas archives, as well as Polk and Liberty Co archives.

As far as is known, there are no inter-marriages between the two Hardin clans of Polk/Liberty Counties.

I should check out the history in the Walsenburg area. I know that most people don't even realize that there were two Civil War battles not far across the state line down in New Mexico. Usually you mention this and they will look at you like you're some kind of nut. And everyone knows about Billy the Kid of course, but they don't realize just how far his range of roaming actually extended.

We always said my dad was born 100 years too late - he would have made a great cowboy, and given his temperament sometimes, he probably would have ended up an outlaw lol. But he would go out of his way to stop anywhere that had history from the 1800's, especially if someone famous from that time had been known to be in that area.

You should drop me a line off the message board! I have a feeling we could get way off the subject here, just going back and forth about the West. patty719@msn.com Patty

You've had a "Historic life"!
I too used to read True West, Frontier Times, etc. and I do read Westerns of Historical correctness.
I had an article in True West April, 2010; my first published article. It was a photo Essay about a West Texas Rancher.
So much history has been missed or forgotten.
I started working on some Pioneer Cow Herders and learned most were missed by the history books so I'll try to fill the gap.
If you learn anything in your research let me know. Their could be some information in or about Walsenburg on Hardin and Ford.
Never read the dime novels anyway - I live in Colorado, right in the middle of all this history. I also lived in Tombstone for a few years, which has some pretty good stuff outside of the shootout. My dad and I spent my entire childhood roaming the historical areas of this state along with other states, and it still amazes me what happened that no one ever really talks about.

And by virtue of my mother's family and the way they married into other families, who then turned around and married back into more family, I end up being related to the Stockton Gang, the Ford, James, House, and Hardin families. Also the Bean family.

This is partly what caused my interest in the Wild West era. I then went on to take several Colorado and Western History classes in college, which caused an even deeper interest.

My dad's dad was an "outlaw wanna be" and seemed to gravitate toward any "bad guys" he could. Surprising he didn't end up getting shot, but somehow he didn't lol. Granddad was in Creede from 1890-1892 - he left after the fire took out his business. There is a photo of him standing in front of his storefront in Creede on file with the Denver Public Library - Western History Division. It's dated "taken 1890-1892." The photo was actually taken in August of 1891, and he was gone from there in June 1892, within a week or so after the fire.

Granddad was in Walsenburg when Ford was there, and family rumor says that he came with Ford to Creede from Walsenburg. No documentation to prove it - we only know that he seemed to more or less "hang out" with Bob Ford.

My family seemed to stretch out a little more than usual. I was born in 1955; my father in 1916; and my grandfather in 1858 - so it's not that far of a leap for my history to get right back into the heyday of the 1800's.

I'll check out WWHA - sounds interesting!

I did an article "In the Shadow of John Wesley Hardin" and published Aug, 2011 in Wild West History Association's Journal.
This Association is top notch with fresh, new articles about true western characters and it gets better and better with quality articles.
Proud to be a member so if you are interested in the real west and stopped reading those "Dime Novel" that now cost 6 bucks give it a spin and check WWHA online.
The saloon was not in Creede. It was in Walsenburg, CO. I do not have the name. Robert Ford had a saloon/gambling hall there and visited Jeff Hardin at Jeff's Saloon. They got drunk and had a gunfight. Both received minor injuries. The sheriff arrested them and told them to leave town. Ford went to Creede and Hardin went to Indian territory. My source was from another author who's source was Hardin Family Association. I did find at least one of his sources in error but I do know that Hardin was there as one of his daughters was born there. Jeff's son John Wesley Hardin and his two daughters remained with their mother when Ida divorced him 1895 and returned to CO. She changed her name and the children's names to Davis. She remairred, later divorced that man, married a 3rd time and died years later in MO.
Ironically, Jeff was killed in a gunfight by John L. Snowden in TX. Snowden moved to Teller Co., CO in 1903 and stayed. His wife and children died 1918 in Teller of the Flu. He worked in Gold mines and last record I find is 1929 when a title transfer of automobile on file in Teller.
There is a possibility that Hardin did not encounter Ford as the source is questionable and I have not gone to CO to research it.
All of this was the featured article I wrote Aug, 2011 for Wild West History Association and A photo of Jeff Hardin [young] made the cover.
Look for a new book in the near future [hopefully] on all of this violent Hardin.

Note: Jeff Hardin had his first Saloon in the Panhandle of TX, 2nd in Walsenburg, 3rd in I. T. at Duncan or Perry, and 4th and last back in TX. He was killed in his own saloon.
I was reading through the message board on gunslingers and outlaws and ran across your post. I am a big fan of the Wild West time period and the outlaws of that time. I had never heard of a saloon owned by a Hardin in Colorado before and this interests me.

I assume that the saloon was located in Creede, CO - since you mentioned that the gunfight happened in 1892, and Robert Ford was in Creede at that time, running his own saloon - Ford's Exchange.

Creede is not that far from me, and I'm curious what the name of Hardin's saloon was? I find the history of Creede interesting in itself. I had a distant cousin shot in the back there in 1892, not long before the fire. And my grandfather ran a business there from 1890-92 - although he actually spent more time in Ford's Exchange lol.

I'd love more information on Hardin and his saloon - even the name of it. It would give me something new to research on the history of Creede, Colorado in it's heyday!

Thanks in advance -

Patricia Quinn Meigs

To set the record straight there were three children. The Jane Martina Hardin you mention is listed as Jennie Hardin Lyons and her death certificate stated she was born in TX. The informant indicated she was 42 years of age. That would be logical since JWH was captured and sent to Prison in TX in 1878. The Callie someone listed as a daughter was actually the 2nd wife of JWH but only for a short time. She remarried and had a full life.

I know I am right about the burial place. It is heavily guarded as there is alot of graffiti and etc. on it if it is not watched. I was let in as I am a relative so that made it easy for me. *smile*. My family told me where to go to find him when I was back home visiting. Now there were memebers of the family trying to move him at the time to another place cannot remember exactly where, but I don't believe they succeeded.

You are correct about the other various gunfighters and figures of the old west. It is a ploy of many ghost towns so as to get the tourists to stop in and spend money. *smile*.

John Wesley Hardin killed a man in Towash, Hill County, Texas. That is where I was born. I'm sure you are right about the burial place. However, many graves are marked with the name of outlaws of the old west where they are not actually buried. Example, Billy the Kid has two grave sites. Jesse James is said to be buried in Granbury, Texas and also in Missouri where he supposedly was shot. A friend of mine wrote a book about Jesse and claimed Granbury was the correct burial place. I've seen the grave site with tombstone in Granbury. Well, they dug it up finally, and it was a man with one leg, which evidently did not prove a thing, so the clutter about it died down. They dug up the one in Missouri also. Nothing proved. Even with DNA. It seems to be some sort of status symbol for a town to claim the burial spot for outlaws of the old west, gravestones and all. Nowadays, they practically 'throw them away'.
But, I've never heard another town who claimed John Wesley's grave so I feel sure you are okay on that point. Happy hunting!

ok, now I have to get out my Grandmothers birth certificate. Iknow she was born in Comanchee County. But will have to recheck the birth certificate. Anyway, John Wesley is buried in El Paso at the Concordia Cemetary. I have photos of me by his gravesite.

Nacadoches, Comanchee County, Texas? are you saying the town of Nacadoches in Comanchee County, Texas? There is a town and a county in eastern/central Texas named Nacogdoches and a town and a county in western/central Texas named Comanche, but I've never heard of a Nacadoches, Texas, in Comanche County or any other county. I do not find it on any map or Atlas, nor the internet, so I think you might be confused or just mis-typed something.
Comanche County claims the following in the official Texas Handbook, speaking of early Comanche County:
"The people worked for economic and social stability and were impatient with outlaws. When the notorious John Wesley Hardin killed Brown County deputy sheriff Charlie Webb in Comanche in 1874 many local citizens resented Hardin's escape. In misguided retaliation, a mob of 300 residents of Brown and Comanche counties stormed the county jail where Joe Hardin (brother of the outlaw) and two of the outlaw's associates were being held. The three prisoners were lynched. Some months later John Hardin was arrested in Florida, tried for murder in Comanche, and sentenced to twenty-five years in prison."

Re: Boone Helm

The first thing everone has to remember is that those were
the days of the "dime novels" and "penny dreadfuls" which were the forerunners of the "yellow press." Boone had a bad
press agent as most of what was written about him have never
been documented. Read "Vengeance-The Saga of Poor Tom Cover" or "Vigilantes of Montana." He was a bad man but he
lived in bad times. ONE case of admitted cannibalism and a
few bad acts which led to him being hung in Virginia City,
Montana by a bunch of guys wearing sheets hung suspected outlaws. However, the hangees were all confederates and the
hangors were all yankees, hmmmmmmm. In regard to being a
relation of the Southern Calif. Helms, I have never been able to find a link to him. He was not a brother to Wid, Chat, Turner, or Daunt who went west from Missouri and settled in NE San Diego County. Those (my) Helms came to
Missouri via Tennessee while Boone's people came through
Kentucky. If their back trails all started in Maryland, they are related somehow, maybe distant cousins. I have stood on the hill where Boone is buried with the other 4
that were hung that night. No headstone. Simple wood crosses were all they got. I offered the city/county offices in Virginia City to put stones on all those graves
but was turned down as it would have to go through the state
historical society. The ironic thing is that the hill over-
looks the Wells-Fargo office which is kind of fitting for a
bandit's gravesite. Good man, bad man, who really knows but
he was a tough man as were all those guys back then. If he
was a relation of mine, cool, if not that's OK too. I will
always admire a guy who said what he said before he died.
It is kind of fitting that in the story of Tom Cover he van-
ishes somewhere in NE San Diego County in the vicinity of the Helm ranches. Cover was one of the guys wearing sheets
when they hung Boone so being a Vigilante turned out to be
highly overrated. If you know any Montana history you can
find the name Alexander Carter among Plummer's Gang and one
of his great, great nephews is a close friend of mine. He
and I met Plummer's great, great granddaughter in Virginia
City one time and the town enjoyed that. I am one of the
great-grandson's of Harmon Turner Helm.
Merideth "Matt" Helm
