Looking for info on Gratiot Street Union prison camp located in St. Louis during the 1860's. GGGrandfather was taken there and apparently died there. Looking for maybe a list of people taken there at that time.

Been a while since you posted your query. Still looking for info? If so, what's the name and where was he from?

Wm. MURRILL, d. 1864 Alton
Hi Deb, Yes it has been a while! And yes I did get the info I was looking for. I was looking for my husbands GGGrandfather, Wm. Murrill from Reynolds Co. MO. Found out he was taken from Gratiot Street to Alton Prison in Illinois and died there in 1864. He is also buried over there in a Confederate Cemetary in Alton. But thanks for asking anyway.

Thomas J. MYERS, Honey Springs, AR
Maybe this board is not being looked at any longer! Just got on the net. I had a Great Uncle, Thomas J. Myers, in that prison ( captured at Honey Springs, Arkansas.) In most Libraries they have sets of Government Document books; " War of the Rebellion.' Doesn't list names but does tell about Units (both sides) and does tell about all the Prisons! They were bad on both sides. My house was divided; some UNION and some CONFEDERATE. The books are sure worth looking at if searching for the truth! HAPPY READING!!
